Thais love to celebrate the New Year so much that they do it three times: on the first new moon after the solstice (falls from January 21 to February 21) - Chinese New Year, April 13 - according to the Buddhist calendar and from December 31 to January 1, along with everything the world.

In December, the rainy season ends in Thailand, and the weather depends on the region:

  • it is most pleasant at this time in the north, for example, in the cities of Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. It is sunny there, not so hot and almost without rain, the air warms up to +27...+29 °С, and the water - up to +25...+26 °С.
  • on Koh Samui it is hot, like in a sauna: very humid, the air temperature is about +30...+31°С, and the water temperature is +27...+28°С. The weather is mostly cloudy, it rains not only at night, but also during the day.
  • in Phuket it is calm, dry and + 31-32 ° С, in the sea it is a little cooler - up to +27 ° С, in Pattaya it is about the same.

Traditions

New Year's Eve on the night of January 1 in Thailand began to be celebrated relatively recently - since 1940. Along with the date, traditions were adopted: Thais are happy to decorate Christmas trees and other trees with toys, decorate cities and houses with garlands and various illuminations, New Year's markets open everywhere and fairs, everyone prepares gifts for relatives and friends, and the housewives think over the festive menu.

On New Year's Eve, it is customary to have dinner with the family, and after midnight go for a walk in bars and discos. At night, many parties, entertainment shows and, of course, fireworks are organized for locals and tourists.

After the New Year's dinner, it is customary for Thais to collect various rags and throw them away in a wasteland: small coins, shreds, tangerine skins, etc. - everything is thrown away and remains in the old year, leaving room for a new one.

On the first day of the new year, Thais go to the temple and visit friends and relatives with gifts and treats, it is considered especially good luck to give oranges and talismans. Samui is stuffy, like in a sauna, but not so crowded and very beautiful. For those who love dry hot weather, it is better to go north - to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, where spring is just beginning.

During the New Year holidays in Thailand, it is worth allocating time for shopping: prices there are already lower than in Europe, and there are also sales in December-January.

In hotel

Almost every hotel prepares its own New Year's entertainment program. Since there are consistently many Russian tourists in this country, there will be many compatriots at popular resorts, they will include the President's address and the chiming clock. New Year's Eve dinner is usually included in the price. Alternatively, you can book a table at any of the restaurants. This must be done in advance, and for the holiday program, most likely, they will charge an additional fee.

In bars and clubs

In Bangkok, on New Year's Eve, the whole city gathers on Koasan Road, an international party, a sea of various drinks and a lot of fun. A minute before midnight, a countdown will be shown on the big screen, and at exactly midnight - a magnificent fireworks display.

Another club capital of the country is Pattaya. Hundreds of bars, discos and strip clubs will be open until dawn, some of them charge around THB600, and drinks inside are expensive. Prices on the page are for May 2017.
