One of the first theaters of our region, built in 1906, rises on Theater Square, and the first mention of the city theater troupe dates back to 1694. In front of the theater there is a stage for public events and holidays, decorated with a large, forged image of the coat of arms of Uzhgorod. The coat of arms of the city was approved in the middle of the XVII century.
Behind the theater building stands the Hasidic synagogue, built in 1904. The building, built at the expense of an unknown philanthropist, still amazes with its grandeur and originality. Since 1947, the building belongs to the Transcarpathian Regional Philharmonic, concerts are held here, and the hall itself ranks third in Europe in terms of its acoustic data.
The river Uzh is an integral part of the local history, which gave the name to the city itself. On medieval maps, Uzhgorod was depicted as a city on an island, which was washed by the Small Uzh and the Big Uzh. In 1777, the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa signed a decree on transferring the administration of the Greek Catholic diocese to Uzhgorod. From the height of the Castle Hill, through the dust of centuries, the Uzhgorod castle looks thoughtfully at the city. According to legend, the fortress was founded by the Slavic prince Laborets in the 9th century. For all my centuries of history the castle has always been a powerful stronghold, withstood many sieges with honor, reliably guarding the road to the Uzhotsky pass. The castle has retained its former grandeur even now, and now the Transcarpathian Museum of Local Lore is located within its walls. The museum has a rich collection of exhibits presented in the exposition. exhibition halls. The museum was built according to the type of building in the Verkhovinsky village, and there is not a single reconstruction among the houses-exhibits. The age of some houses is about 200-250 years. A special place in the collection is occupied by a wooden church from the village of Shelestovo, built by craftsmen in 1777. This unique building, built without a single nail, is a classic of Lemko temple architecture, where each element is filled with meaning and symbolism.
