XX). Kuzhenkino station Bologoye-Polotsk railway

Settlement Kuzhenkino located in the north of the Tver region, in the Bologovsky district. It is located 20 kilometers southwest of the district center along the Bologoye - Velikiye Luki railway. To the north of the village is the Russia highway (Moscow - St. Petersburg). The Shpina River and its two tributaries flow along Kuzhenkino. The name of the village comes from the Ugrofin root "kuzhenya", which means "bear cub".

Story

The first mention of Kuzhenkino dates back to 1583. Then there was still a village that belonged to the Novgorod Khutynsky monastery. Several times the village changed its location, focusing on the Moscow-Novgorod tract, which also did not have a permanent location. Only in the first half of the 19th century, the tract was fixed, covered with gravel. Kuzhenkino was a mile away from him.

In 1903, Bologoye-Polotsk was built in the vicinity of the village. Railway... The station closest to the village was named Kuzhenkino. Under her, a station village grew up. In 1910, warehouses with military uniforms, which were used in the First World War, appeared near the village. Like warehouses military equipment they were listed in Soviet time... This object still exists today.

sights

The complex of buildings of the railway station has historical and cultural value in Kuzhenkino. It includes a wooden station building, a water tower, household and service buildings.

In the village of Kuzhenkino, which is located 5 kilometers north of the village, the stone church of the Transfiguration of the Savior of 1841 has been preserved.

One of the few remaining on this railway almost completely station complexes, including numerous buildings, mainly appeared during the construction of the railway in 1902-1906.

The complex of buildings includes a station, two barracks and a semi-barracks for railway employees, two houses for one and two apartments, a club, a kerosene warehouse, a water tower, a gatehouse at the crossing and two booths for switchmen, as well as auxiliary buildings - two sheds (luggage and wood) and an impromptu wartime power plant made from carriages.

Kuzhenkino station is not only a complex of buildings for railway purposes, but also numerous buildings of a military town, built before World War I, but used by the military department to this day. Since you can get there only with special passes, we are forced to omit the story about these structures. On a Google map, these are numerous buildings to the west and northwest of the railway:

For convenience, on this fragment of the same place, we circled the railway station in red, its outbuildings and power plant in yellow, the residential barracks and the gatehouse in blue, the switchmen's booths in brown, and the water tower in orange. As you can see, the old buildings were symmetrically located, and all buildings were clearly planned.

The most notable building of the complex is, of course, the station (its coordinates are given below). This is one of the three railway stations that have survived on this road. Compare with the drawings (taken from the book "Bologoye-Polotsk Reserve Railway" (Moscow, 2009). Pp. 14, 16). The name of the station of the Nazimovo station near Velikiye Luki, which died during the war, is indicated, but the project is typical.

Compare with the state of the station in Kuzhenkin in November 2012:

The station building in the Art Nouveau style has well preserved its external architectural decor - original bindings on the pediments, hanging carved weights of various shapes and curved brackets supporting the roof outreach.

A turret with a weather vane serves as a special decoration. It has been replaced with a new one, but in the same form. There is one only at this station.

At present, the interiors of the waiting rooms are completely Soviet and post-war. Only the premises reserved for the attendant, telegraph, and post office have retained more or less their original appearance. Doors with panels and old handles, janitorial boxes, Uthermark ovens, as well as station equipment have been preserved:

The station is surrounded by wooden and stone buildings different years, but in the vast majority - 1900s. Particular attention is drawn to several sheds, where next to the luggage shed there is a very monumental structure with a pitched roof, the extension of which is decorated with carved consoles of an asymmetrical pattern

The old wood shed has also survived, with two carriages adjoining it. According to the authors of the book "Bologoye-Polotsk Reserve Railway", these are two cars - domestic normal car pre-war model and captured German indoor, model 1942. During the war years, they housed a power plant, and now they have stacked firewood:

In front of the station building, a concrete box, which is common here at all stations, has been preserved (from the beginning of the 20th century), enclosing a sandy filling platform:

On the other side of the station, there is a partially cobbled circular path around the square, behind which there is a wooden club building (circled in pink in a Google photo) from the 1930s.

and a water tower for two tanks with a preserved domed completion with round lucarnes, decorated with granite cladding and decorative belts.

Near the station, there is a miniature, but beautifully executed structure - a kerosene warehouse, the architecture of which follows the same type as the water tower. A small and completely utilitarian building, it turned out to be truly monumental.

Residential barracks (state-owned houses with apartments for employees, by the standards of that time, very good housing), have survived of various types. The so-called "line barracks". A drawing from the said book, (p. 17) and the embodied project:

Barracks ("full barracks"):

And the "half-barracks" (the same project, but half of the building):

Near the crossing, the so-called "guard house" (from the specified book p. 21) has survived (but is now abandoned), and behind it is the switchman's booth:

The second booth was preserved near the linear barracks in the direction of Bologoye.

Then the village of Kuzhenkino was formed, as it exists today. A remarkable complex of buildings exists just a few kilometers from the Moscow-Petersburg highway, but is little known. It deserves both greater fame and state protection as a rare surviving example of Russian railway architecture of the early 20th century.
