Everyone who walked around the central part of Gurzuf could not help but notice the sculptural group at the entrance to the Korovin boarding house. Two representatives of Russian culture of the early twentieth century - A.K. Korovin and F.I. Chaliapin - captured in bronze and are a reminder of the rich history of a completely different Gurzuf, a resort of artists, writers, poets and artists. The sculpture is also a reminder to the younger generation of the villagers that one of the buildings of the modern boarding house was the home of Korovin, an outstanding Russian artist.

House of Korovin

Konstantin Alekseevich Korovin is a great Russian painter, many of his famous works are in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery and other Russian museums. His brother Sergei was also a famous artist. In addition to the talent of the painter, Konstantin Alekseevich was generously gifted with the muse of literature.

Konstantin Korovin was not the first artist to appear on south coast Crimea, which was rapidly gaining fame as the first resort of the Russian Empire. He was not the first of those who painted Crimean landscapes. Before him, among the fertile nature of the peninsula, I.E. Krachkovsky, K. Bossoli, F.A. Vasiliev, V.D. Orlovsky, Yu.Yu. Clover, I.K. Aivazovsky, M.P. Latry, A.I. Kuindzhi. After the first visit, Korovin was fascinated and captivated by the Crimea. He firmly decided to build his own house here, for the construction he chose Gurzuf, who was getting prettier every day. A tavern once stood on the site of Korovin's future house. The painter buys this plot and builds a dacha for himself, which he later calls "Salambo". This is the name of the novel by Gustave Flaubert, according to the plot of which in Bolshoi Theater the ballet by A.F. Arends, and the artist painted scenery for him. Korovin wrote about the new house:

“In the Crimea, in Gurzuf, by the sea, I built myself a house with fourteen rooms. The house was good. When you woke up, you saw roses from the balcony and the blue sea. ... From the terrace you could see Odalary - two big rocks, protruding from the sea - "desert rocks". No one lived on these rocks. Only swifts flew with a whistle. There was no water, no vegetation."

From 1910 until the beginning of the revolution, the artist lived long hours in his new home and worked hard. It was in Korovin's house that such canvases as “Portrait of F.I. Chaliapin" (1911), "Pier in Gurzuf" (1912), "Gurzuf in the evening" (1912), "Gurzuf" (1915), "Gurzuf" (1917), "Flower Bazaar in Gurzuf" (1917). The painter worked on several paintings at once, depending on what part of the day he painted. In the morning he took on one picture, in the evening another. On the balcony of the workshop of Korovin's house were painted "Balcony in the Crimea", "On the terrace", "Evening. Interior". The further, the more the artist lives at his dacha Salambo. After the outbreak of the First World War, Korovin's house was almost never empty. Konstantin Alekseevich likes to live in Gurzuf even in winter, which is very mild here.

Among the works of that time, one can distinguish the famous painting “Pier in Gurzuf” (1914). At that time, the Impressionists were going out of fashion, but Korovin managed to create a bright and lively masterpiece, all the more valuable for the Crimeans, which was created in Gurzuf. This painting is kept in the State Russian Museum. The painting “Gurzuf” (1914) can also be called a work characteristic of this period, which depicts a young woman leaning against the parapet of the Gurzuf embankment, against the background of its rocks and the blue sea.

There were always many guests in Korovin's house, and eminent guests. Gorky, Chaliapin, Repin, Kuprin, Mamin-Sibiryak came to him. In 1911, Korovin painted the famous portrait of Fyodor Chaliapin, which was later taken as the basis for monuments to the great Russian opera singer. One of them stands on the grave of Chaliapin at the Novodevichy cemetery, where the ashes of the singer were transported from abroad after the war, another monument is the well-known bronze sculpture at the entrance to Korovin's house.

In 1917, Konstantin Korovin left Gurzuf. He will never find himself among Soviet painters. After ordeals in state institutions, the painter had to leave the Soviet Union forever - fortunately in 1923 they were still allowed to leave the young country. Contributed to the departure of the People's Commissar of Education Lunacharsky. Korovin lived and worked in Paris, where he died in 1939.

V Soviet time former home Korovin was nationalized. Soon a rest house was opened in it. After the end of the Great Patriotic War, the House of Creativity of the Art Fund was opened in the building of the dacha "Salambo". Since then, Soviet artists and sculptors have been resting here. In 1961, a bronze memorial plaque by sculptor S. Morgachev with a bas-relief of Korovin's profile was unveiled on the wall of Korovin's house. Now in the memorial room of K.A. Korovin you can see some of the artist's works.

This very house Konstantin Korovin bequeathed to Russian painters. In 2001, at the gates of Korovin's house appeared sculptural composition, which depicts in bronze F.I. Chaliapin and K.A. Korovin, as if leading a casual conversation. The project was carried out by sculptors K. Sinitsky and M. Levchenko.

Boarding house named after Korovin

Currently, the former house of Korovin is the first building of the boarding house, also named after him. The second building is a modern five-story building located just to the west of the first building. The boarding house has its own pebble beach, one and a half hundred meters from the buildings. There is a small park on the territory of the boarding house. The infrastructure is classic - tennis court, sports ground, cafe, restaurant, billiards, library.

Korovin's house and roses

In the Crimea, Korovin increasingly turns to the genre of still life. Drawing becomes the artist's passion. All his beautiful vases were transported to Korovin's house in Gurzuf. The artist spent a long time correlating flower bouquets with vases, looking for successful combinations, and choosing favorable lighting. Roses are most often depicted in his still lifes. And thanks to the breeders of the Nikitsky Botanical Plant, there were many varieties of roses in the Crimea. Roses of the most unusual shapes and colors in jugs and vases.

In July 1916, in a letter to Kreiter, Korovin admits:

“I painted four pictures of roses better than before ... To tell you the truth, it is very difficult to write, because. very hot, everything is kind of melted... Roses, and rather bad ones, are sold here for 30 kopecks. thing. Your newspapers write that everything is crowded here, but in fact it is completely empty in Yalta ... ”

At that time it was difficult to buy roses in July, hence the complaint of Konstantin Korovin. Often I had to write from memory or use paper layouts of flowers - there are such works in the painter's collection. But, be that as it may, in the house of Korovin in Gurzuf, many masterpieces were born that were included in the treasury of Russian still life painting. These are “Roses and Apples” of 1917, where the blue sea is visible in the background, these are “Roses” of 1912, where, in addition to the sea, rocks are visible in the distance (Chekhov’s cottage is located on them, but this is not visible in the picture), this is “Still Life. Roses" in 1916.

Rose bushes also braided the entrance to the courtyard of Korovin's house. This is a Chinese yellow rose, or Banks rose. The branches of these bushes twist.

The rose bushes at Korovin's house are over a hundred years old. Another notable variety of Chinese rose - Fortune's rose - grows above the entrance to Korovin's house and is also a contemporary of the owner. And even in exile, Konstantin Alekseevich continues to draw roses against the background of the sea, missing his original dacha "Salambo".

How to get to Korovin's house in Gurzuf

If you arrived at the Gurzuf bus station, then you need to go along the longest street in the village - Leningradskaya - to the intersection with Chekhov Street. This intersection can be considered the center of Gurzuf - there is a small beautiful square with a fountain. At the beginning of the street, at Chekhov, 1, is the former house of Korovin. To the embankment - a few tens of meters.

"Korovin's painting - impudently careless, rough - seemed to many simply inept in the 19th century. No one then suspected that both the painting and the colors in these paintings were of high dignity, that their author was a real painter. A misunderstanding in relation to K. Korovin - of the most deplorable quality. It best of all proves how far the Russian public is in general from any understanding of painting. What sadness that this huge master, this bright original talent, who twice spent his strength on such ephemeral creations as exhibition panels, all who spends their time on even more ephemeral creations - on theatrical scenery, will probably not get the opportunity to perpetuate himself and endow Russia with a truly beautiful, majestic work ... "
Alexander Benois about the work of Konstantin Korovin

In 1912, Konstantin Korovin built a dacha in Gurzuf.
The history of Korovin's house began with a meeting with Chekhov, who invited him to settle in the Gurzuf dacha near the sea. The artist refused - he could not sleep so close to the noisy elements that caused his heart to beat. And he built himself a workshop not near the shore, from its window one could see a house near the rock, where Anton Pavlovich once lived. In his memoirs we read: “I often reproduced this house in my paintings. Roses… and Anton Pavlovich's house stood out intimately against the background of the sea. It gave the mood of a distant land, and the sea rustled near the poor house, where the soul of the great writer, poorly understood by his time, lived.

Dacha "Salambo" is rather modest in architectural terms, such an ascetic modernist style. Here the artist painted "Portrait of F.I. Chaliapin", "Gurzuf in the evening", "Flower Bazaar in Gurzuf" and other works. Korovin was visited by I.E. Repin, V.I. Surikov, L.I. Andreev, D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak, A.M. Gorky, A.I. Kuprin, F.I. Chaliapin. The entrance to the dacha is now decorated with sculptures by K. Korovin and F. Chaliapin, who poses for him.

The tour starts in the courtyard. There are long benches on the platform overlooking the sea and Chekhov Bay. "Skovorodka" - this is how this terrace was called during the time of Korovin and Chaliapin because of the heat. Then the cypresses were still young and during the day the sun mercilessly burned down. On the territory, in addition to cypresses, several unusual bushes of climbing roses have survived since those times.

The Gurzuf period was short - from 1911 to 1917, but fruitful. The works of this time are distinguished by their special lightness and artistry. “On the seashore”, “Pier in Gurzuf”, “Gurzuf in the evening”, “Flower Bazaar”, “Fishing Bay” are literally mesmerizing. It is in the south that Korovin's interest in still life appears, a genre he had previously underestimated.

These blue balconies are historical part buildings, the rest are later additions. The walls, the ceiling, and the balcony openings all remained intact.

The excursion to Korovin's house begins with the guide's story about the life of the great artist, the first Russian impressionist.
And Korovin's life, like that of all people, was full of both sorrows and joys. But in spite of everything, his pictures are very positive, full of bright colors and moods.
Korovin bought a plot of land in Gurzuf thanks to Chekhov, with whom he had been friends since his student years. Built a cottage-workshop. And in order to support her, he built a profitable house nearby, in which he rented rooms for 65 rubles a day with full board. He named the dacha beautifully - Salambo, emphasis on "o".
The workshop gradually expanded, turning into a villa of fourteen rooms, which the owner and author of the project called "Salambo" - based on the novel about the Carthaginian passions by Gustave Flaubert and the ballet of the same name at the Bolshoi Theater, for which Korovin wrote the scenery.
There is now a dining room on the site of the workshop, and Korovin's house of creativity is located in the tenement house.

Consider the exhibits of the memorial room of Konstantin Korovin.

In the workshop of Konstantin Alekseevich there was antique dark red furniture, the walls were trimmed with brown wood. On the balcony of the workshop, Korovin painted several famous sketches - “A Balcony in the Crimea”, “On the Terrace”, “Evening. Interior" and others.

At sunrise, he painted a morning sketch, after breakfast he left to work on the day one, and at dusk he started the third one - in the evening. Evening streets, dukhans and shops with lights and dark figures especially inspired the artist. And so, while he lived in Gurzuf, he passed almost every day.

Korovin moved his extensive collection of vases and jugs to the Gurzuf dacha. He was always very concerned about the correspondence of the flower vessel to the nature of the bouquet. And Korovin made bouquets for each room himself, and he wrote a great variety of Crimean roses.

In Soviet times, the dacha was used as a recreation center. Since 1947, it has become the House of Creativity of the Art Fund. Artists and creative intelligentsia work and rest here. Very often on the old streets of Gurzuf you can see people with easels.

In 1961, a bronze memorial plaque with a relief portrait of K.A. Korovin (sculptor S. Morgachev). Konstantin Alekseevich Korovin was buried in 1939 in France, where he emigrated in 1923.

"Korovin was not gifted with a comprehensive talent. The harmony of truth and beauty, illuminating the art of V. Serov, the tragic ecstasy of M. Vrubel or the inexhaustible imagination of N. Roerich, were not available to him, and from the point of view of academic science, Korovin did not always and in everything satisfy the strict connoisseurs and judges. Beautiful juicy in color, works interspersed with unsuccessful, and sometimes banal paintings; magnificent examples of color mastery - with "raw" paint, bravura, sweeping brushstroke, loose and approximate drawing. Korovin must be accepted as he was, with his strengths and weaknesses, this is how he entered the history of Russian painting late XIX- early 20th century...
Grigory Ostrovsky about Konstantin Korovin
