The maximum weight of a suitcase on an airplane for two. Baggage and hand luggage

If you are going on a trip, study the nuances that determine the baggage allowance on the plane in advance. They determine the norms on all Russian airlines, except Pobeda. For foreign companies, the rules determined by the legislation of the respective country continue to apply. What do you need to know so that you save yourself from unpleasant surprises?

Generally accepted standards and rules: what kind of baggage can be carried as cargo

First, understand the terminology to avoid confusion:

  • hand luggage It is customary to name the things that you will take on the plane. They are allowed to be placed on a special shelf or under the seat in front (if the items do not differ in size). At check-in, carriers have the right to require weighing of hand luggage. If you go through the procedure online, then marking is not required. Weighing in this case is done before the boarding gate.
  • Personal items- items that are allowed to be taken on a plane without prior weighing and marking (folder, cane, book).
  • Baggage- these are bags, suitcases, backpacks and other things handed over to the cargo hold. It is issued for each passenger separately. Upon check-in, you place the bags on the conveyor where the weighing takes place. If there is no excess of the norm, the baggage is marked with a barcode sticker and sent to the cargo hold. You are given a surrender coupon, and in case of loss of a suitcase or bag, the document will help you defend your rights.

According to the new baggage rules on the plane , the weight norm for 1 seat is reduced from 32 kg to 30. It may be lower, but not higher. But this does not mean that the indicator is the same for everyone: it is affected by the fare at which the ticket was purchased.

New rules: how to carry luggage and hand luggage

If you haven't traveled since the introduction of the new rules, you might be surprised baggage free tickets sold not the first day. But even the budget "Victory" provided the opportunity to carry up to 10 kg in the cargo compartment. In 2018, the norm specified in the Air Code was canceled. What should be taken into account now?

Baggage requirements 10-30 kg

To avoid trouble, check the new rules on the carrier's website. He has the right to set the weight depending on the fare of the ticket. If the upper limit is 23 kg, then if you overweight, you will need to pay extra or take out some of the things.

Don't forget to check the baggage rules on the plane

According to the rules, a baggage weight of 30 kg is allowed for business class passengers: it has advantages over economy class. In the latter, the upper limit of the norm is 23 kg.

Baggage requirements over 30 kg

When exceeding the norm of 30 kg the cargo falls under the criterion of heavyweight. The calculation is made according to the tariffs of the company. You have to pay extra for every kilogram.

There are also restrictions on dimensions, and they include:

  • skis and other sports items that take up a lot of space;
  • musical instruments (double bass, cello);
  • Large home appliances.

To transport such cargo, contact the airline representatives in advance and find out the new rules. The support service will select an option for transporting oversized baggage, but if there is not enough space in the cargo compartment, they have the right to refuse you. Arrive at the airport early as check-in will take longer.

In winter, some airlines allow you to carry skis and other equipment without surcharges.

Baggage free tickets

Important changes in the rules regarding the carriage of baggage on an airplane have affected baggage-free tickets. After all, airlines have the right not to include the cost in the price of the travel document which will save the passenger. For example, earlier on a Pobeda flight, you could drop a suitcase weighing up to 10 kg into the cargo hold. But now the airline has the ability to charge for everything except a woman's bag or briefcase. The advantages for travelers include cheapness: those who want to save money will find great deals, leaving extra things at home.

46% of passengers agree to do without hand luggage to save on flights.

Similar rules apply to the category non-refundable tickets. When buying them, specify whether you have chosen the “no-baggage” option or the price includes shipping. If the ticket is refundable, then the price automatically includes the transportation of 10 kg of luggage.

Is it possible to combine luggage on the plane: study the rules

After a protest from the Moscow Interregional Transport Prosecutor's Office, Aeroflot changed the rules for carrying luggage.

If passengers are traveling together with the same purpose of travel, to the same airport of destination or stopover, then, at the request of passengers, it is allowed to apply to the baggage of these passengers the sum of the norms (including norms for weight and size) of the free checked baggage allowance of each of the passengers.
One piece of baggage must not exceed 32 kg in weight and/or 203 cm in sum of three dimensions, the total number of pieces of combined baggage must not exceed the sum of the free baggage allowance.

Now, when traveling with family or friends, you will receive possibility to combine cargoes, rather than distributing things into several bags or paying extra for overweight. In this case, they should take 1st place. The rules for carrying baggage on an airplane imply that you put things in 1 common bag. But the total weight should not exceed 30 kg, or you will have to make an additional payment.

Rules for the transport of fragile items

Have to take fragile things on a trip? Glass products, electronic devices and appliances, decor items should not be handed over as ordinary cargo. To prevent boxes or bags from being thrown when loading onto an airplane, check in your baggage marked “fragile”. He will not be put on a conveyor, but taken to the department. Alas, you will not receive guarantees for the integrity of items.

If the dimensions of things do not exceed the allowable dimensions, take them to the salon. In this case, it is important that you do not transport liquids in glass jars: jams will have to be handed over to the cargo compartment.

Excess baggage and what to do with it

When you buy travel document, then its category determines the allowable limits for the weight of goods. If the indicator exceeds the established norm, the mass is considered to be in excess of the norm. For example, an economy class passenger can take baggage up to 23 kg. The size of the surcharge should be clarified in advance, and some companies allow a small excess.

Hand luggage and new rules for its transportation

When collecting luggage on a plane, ask how many kilograms are allowed per person. Since the autumn of 2017, the restriction for airlines has come into force:

The maximum weight of hand luggage that can be carried free of charge must not exceed 5 kg.

At the same time, the carrier has the right to change the indicator by increasing the rate to 6, 7 or 10 kg: this will attract a client. There are also restrictions on dimensions, because the height of the item should not exceed 0.56 m, the width - 0.45 m, and the thickness - 0.25 m. Check the acceptable indicators on the website of the selected carrier.

What you can not check in as hand luggage

Under the new rules, hand luggage can be weighed and labeled at check-in or before boarding. But you are allowed to take extra things.

Previously, the list was wider, but the Ministry of Transport decided that some things can be put in a bag. These include a laptop, an umbrella, books and a mobile phone.

Did you put your laptop in a bag or backpack? You won't have to pay. Failed to complete the task? Make an extra payment.

What luggage to take into the cabin: what can be kept in hand luggage with you

When determining what to bring to the cabin, remember: the main cargo can be lost. In time it will be found, but it is safer to keep the necessary things with you. Take documents, fragile items, expensive gadgets, medicines, hygiene products to the salon.

What else can you take? According to the rules, the following is allowed:

What is not allowed to be taken into the cabin: transportation rules

  • You can not take weapons and children's toys that imitate them, dummies.
  • sharp, piercing, cutting objects are banned. The idea of grabbing knitting needles or a corkscrew will have to be abandoned. Even nail scissors and a nail file are included in the list of things that are not allowed for transportation in the cabin.
  • You will have to do without household chemicals, especially without flammable aerosols.
  • As for shaving accessories, take disposable products with closed cutting surfaces or safety razors.

Often the question is asked whether it is possible to bring a thermometer into the cabin. The answer depends on the type of device: you put the electronic device in your hand luggage or in a suitcase that you check in the cargo hold. A thermometer with mercury is transported in a protective case in the amount of 1 pc (check the Rules for the carriage of baggage and carry-on baggage on the carrier's website). But it will have to be checked in.

Items prohibited in hand luggage

Airline rules: what you need to know about carrying luggage on an airplane

Under the new rules, airlines have the right to weigh luggage before boarding passengers. How are changes implemented in practice?

Aeroflot: unpleasant surprises

Aeroflot passengers have to think not only about what can be carried on the plane in luggage. Since February 2018, complaints have begun to appear that the company measures luggage dimensions near the boarding gates. Representatives of the carrier gave explanations: according to them, the measure was taken due to the fact that customers are dissatisfied with the lack of space in the salons.

Now the “sum of 3 measurements” rule does not work: if earlier the total value of the indicators should not exceed 115, then according to the new regulations, the dimensions are limited to 55x40x20 cm. Even if the height of the suitcase is 35 cm, this does not mean that the width can exceed 20 cm. criteria do not fit even small bags.

New Aeroflot rules

The new rules are stricter than most low-cost airlines with their strict standards. But Aeroflot also changed the list of things that are allowed to be taken into the salon without registration. Disappeared from the standard list children food, cane, camera. The number of duty-free packages is also negotiated: it should be the only one.

Is the guitar one of the allowed things? The company has announced that musical instruments must have a maximum of 135 cm in the sum of 3 measurements. If the guitar does not meet the criteria of the rules, contact the company representatives 36 hours before departure and agree on the issue.

Ural Airlines: what you need to know

The company explains the current rules:

Free transportation rules

For some flights ("Moscow - Baikonur - Moscow"), additional restrictions are introduced: for economy class, the weight of hand luggage is 5 kg, and you can carry luggage up to 15 kg for free. If you bought a business class ticket, the figures increase to 10 and 30 kg, respectively.

Utair and S7: consider the changes

On the websites of Utair airlines, there are also shortened lists of things that are allowed to be imported and exported as an addition to hand luggage.

The list of things allowed to be checked into the cargo hold includes the following:

  • crossbows, knives, swords, etc.;
  • knives or scissors, when the length of the cutting part does not exceed 60 mm;
  • spirits or liquids, if the alcohol content does not exceed 24%;
  • drinks and liquids with an alcohol content of 24-70%, provided that the amount per person is not more than 5 liters (the container capacity should also not exceed this value);
  • aerosols in cylinders, whose atomizers are closed with caps, and the maximum volume is 500 ml (there is a limit for 1 passenger - 2 kg or l).

Official rules apply to all flights; similar conditions were introduced by the administration of Ural Airlines and other companies.

The rules prohibit the carriage of the following items in checked baggage:

  • military, civilian and service weapons;
  • pyrotechnic means;
  • explosives and parts of explosive devices;
  • flammable liquids and solids;
  • radioactive and corrosive substances;
  • items containing radioactive elements;
  • items similar to weapons that can be used in the commission of acts of unlawful interference, including all types of brass knuckles and throwing weapons;
  • compressed and liquefied gases.

Some items are allowed to be transported only with the registration of "Dangerous Goods". These include personal mobility aids powered by lithium batteries. The same rule applies if you want to transport a moped or mobile device powered by a 160 Wh or higher lithium-ion battery.

Exceptions are made when it comes to devices used by passengers with limited mobility. In this case, you need to obtain permission from the company in advance. If the battery power is less, it is removed and transported in hand luggage (with a characteristic of 100-160 Wh, permission must be obtained).

Find out in advance what the cost of your luggage on the plane will be if it is overweight. Terms and conditions can be found on the company's website.

Frequently asked Questions

Some restrictions come as a surprise to passengers. To avoid such situations, please read the answers to frequently asked questions.

Can liquids be carried on an airplane

Since 2006 the companies prohibited from transporting volumetric containers with liquids. The restriction is due to the fact that the terrorists have repeatedly tried to carry parts of explosive devices disguised as harmless bottles on board international aircraft.

Liquids are:

  • cosmetic and perfumery products (perfumes, gels, etc.);
  • products (jam, drinks, syrups, etc.).

How much liquid can you carry on an airplane

How much liquid can be carried in the luggage of the aircraft

The maximum volume of the container that contains the liquid is 100 ml. If you try to take a bottle of 200 ml, arguing that there is only 50 ml of water in it, you will not be able to bring it on board.

If the volume does not exceed the allowable one, the passenger should put all the containers in a 20x20 cm bag. It is advisable to buy it in advance, since the cost will be higher at the airport. The total volume of liquids should be no more than 1 liter. 1 package for 1 passenger; What doesn't fit will have to be thrown away. You do not need to put baby or diet food in it, but be prepared to open the containers to check the contents.

Liquids purchased in duty free can be taken to the salon, but on condition that they are in a sealed bag.

Can I take groceries on a plane?

It is not forbidden to take food into the cabin, but additional control is carried out on international flights: veterinary and phytosanitary. To avoid unpleasant surprises, bring foil-wrapped sandwiches, sweets or fruit with you. Avoid foods that leave crumbs or smell your neighbors. Also note that some treats are classified as liquids (yogurts). The volume of the container in this case should not exceed 100 ml.

If you still have questions about whether you can take food on a plane, watch the video:

Hand luggage when traveling with a child

When flying with a child, the question arises, is it possible to take a baby stroller into the cabin. The rules are that before boarding the plane, you will give the stroller to the airport staff. It will be classified as checked baggage. Its mass will not be included in the weight norm, but it should not exceed 20 kg.

Some strollers are allowed on the plane

Child seat is transported free of charge, and you can take it to the cabin, provided that you have purchased a ticket for a child with a separate seat. The product must be marked with an acknowledgment that it is intended for use in aircraft.

Separate baggage can be issued for a child under 2 years old; weight should not exceed 10 kg. Check the upper limit of hand luggage with the carrier: many companies do not allow it, because the baby flies without a seat.

What to do if your baggage is lost by the airline

If your luggage is lost or sent on another flight, do not despair. The main thing is that you have a receipt in your hands. Write a statement to the Lost Property Department and wait for the result. The airline is obliged to find the loss within 3 weeks. Was the bag returned damaged or not found at all? Claim compensation; if they refuse you, take documentary evidence and go to court.

The amount payable for lost or damaged luggage varies by company:

  • foreign ones provide $20 per kg;
  • domestic - $10 per kg.

According to the Montreal Convention, the maximum compensation for the loss of a suitcase is $1,500. To increase your chances, add receipts to the description of the missing items, and you will receive a full or partial refund.

It is advisable to insure valuables in advance by paying additional fees.

Conclusion

The new rules that apply to airlines provide an opportunity to save money. Go on a trip with a minimum of things, and you won’t have to pay extra for baggage transportation. The main thing is that you clarify the tariffs and norms in advance!

Checked Baggage Rules and Regulations

So, let's start with the fact that when determining the checked baggage allowance, airlines use seating system(peace concept), which lies in the fact that one passenger has the right to carry several pieces of baggage.

One piece of baggage should be understood as one bag or one suitcase with a maximum weight 23 or 32 kg. The maximum dimensions of one piece of baggage - 158 or 203 cm by the sum of three dimensions (length + height + width), taking into account protruding parts (handles, pockets, wheels).

The exact number of pieces of checked baggage, their weight and size are set by each airline on an individual basis, depending on the class of passenger service and the type of ticket fare.

There are three passenger classes: economy, business and first class. Within each class, airlines independently set from one to several types of fares. As a result, the total number of tariffs for each carrier, as a rule, ranges from 4 to 10. It is important to understand that the types of tariffs are not standard for all airlines in the world, but differ in individual conditions. Including they differ in the baggage allowance.

Free checked baggage allowance

Since airlines do not have a uniform classification of fares, there cannot be standard free baggage allowances. However, conditionally all tariffs of different airlines of the world can be divided into several categories.

Category 1- the most budgetary economy class fare, also known as no-baggage fare. Does not include free checked baggage allowance, but the passenger has the option to take it (as an additional service).

At the no-baggage rate, only hand luggage can be carried free of charge. The name for the no-baggage fare is determined by each airline independently, although it is generally accepted light(Light). Sometimes Basic is used.

Category 2- standard economy class fares. As a rule, there are always several such tariffs, which is caused by a different number of additional services. As for the free baggage allowance, these rates are no different. All of them provide one piece of luggage weighing no more than 23 kg, but its dimensions can be 158 or 203 cm. In addition to the free norm, you can take several units paid baggage, details .

Examples of tariff names of the second category are as follows: Basic (Basic), Standard (Standard), Flex (Flexible), Classic (Classic).

Category 3- premium economy class fare. Provides one or two pieces of luggage, weighing 23 or 32 kg, whose dimensions are 158 or 203 cm. You can also take an additional one. Examples of tariff names of the third category: Comfort (Comfortable), Premium (Premium).

Category 4- business and first class fares. If an airline has the same fare for business and first class, then in 90% of cases this two pieces of luggage 32 kg each. However, when several fares are presented for each of these classes, then the most "modest" of them will provide for one piece of 32 kg (or two pieces of 23 kg), and the best - two or three pieces of 32 kg. At the same time, the luggage dimensions remain unchanged - 158 or 203 cm.

How loyalty programs affect baggage allowances

If the passenger is a member bonus program loyalty of one of the air carriers, then upon accumulating a certain number of points/miles or obtaining gold/platinum status, the airline provides Possibility to carry an extra suitcase at no extra charge. It is convenient and pleasant, therefore, if you plan to fly with one airline quite often, then you should register in the system as soon as possible and start accumulating bonuses. In addition to carrying luggage, you can get other privileges. Their full list is presented on the official website of the airline.

The weight and size of the luggage is not cumulative

Very often, passengers wonder if it is possible to sum up luggage when flying together (friends, family or children). The answer, alas, is negative. Each passenger has the right to carry only the baggage allowance indicated on the ticket. According to the rules, any deviation (in a larger direction) will be considered an excess, it will have to be paid additionally. In practice, airline employees can sometimes make an exception if only one parent flies with a small child, but you should not count on luck - compliance with the baggage rules in Lately has become more thorough, and even a slight deviation from the norm can cost the passenger dearly.

Exceeding the number of pieces of free baggage

In the official terminology of the airlines, a suitcase or bag that exceeds the free baggage allowance by the number of pieces of baggage is called excess baggage. As a rule, the passengers themselves in colloquial vocabulary often call it additional or paid baggage.

Oversized Checked Baggage

Oversized baggage should be understood as any baggage that significantly exceeds the standard size and / or weight. As a rule, we are talking about sports equipment, musical instruments, wheelchairs. Such baggage is also excess baggage, but in different airlines may be called differently: special, heavy, non-standard or oversized. In most cases, it is paid, like excess baggage, the only difference is that the transportation of oversized baggage must be agreed in advance (24-36 hours before departure) with the airline by calling the hotline.

Important! There are no generally accepted rules in relation to the transportation of oversized baggage. Airlines install them on their own, so in each case you need to clarify the current rules of your particular carrier.

Many airlines do exceptions for the most popular categories of oversized sports equipment, which are:

  • a set of ski / snowboard equipment;
  • a set of equipment for surfing / diving.

The exceptions are that such a set may be carried free of charge or in lieu of one standard piece of checked baggage. Sometimes - at a reduced cost.

Features of carrying checked baggage on an airplane

Loading luggage

So, let's look at the main problems that your checked baggage may face:

What is prohibited in checked baggage

  • weapon;
  • liquefied and compressed gases;
  • radioactive materials;
  • chemicals and toxic substances;
  • poisons and toxic substances;
  • corrosive and caustic compounds;
  • flammable liquids;
  • solid flammable substances;
  • pyrotechnics and fireworks;
  • organic peroxides and oxidizing agents;
  • explosives, as well as any objects stuffed with explosives.

For anyone modern man 95% of prohibitions are taken for granted. The remaining 5% of the bans that the average passenger is not always aware of include:

  • lighters and matches;
  • tobacco and coal for hookah;
  • children's toys imitating weapons;
  • electronic smoking devices powered by batteries.

Transportation of lithium batteries

As a rule, almost all airlines prohibit the transportation of lithium batteries without the original packaging and portable chargers (power bank), due to the risk of a short circuit and subsequent fire. In cases where lithium batteries are inside vehicles, the rules for transporting them depend on their capacity, which is determined by the amount of lithium they contain. There are three categories:

  • smartphones, laptops, digital cameras and other devices with a power density of up to 100 Wh (containing no more than two grams of lithium) are allowed in checked baggage.
  • laptops with an extended resource, professional audio and video equipment, as well as other equipment with a specific power from 100 to 160 Wh (2–8 grams of lithium). To transport it, the passenger must apply in advance for a special permit.
  • segways, gyroscooters, hoverboards and other equipment with a specific power of more than 160 Wh (8 grams of lithium and more). Transport is prohibited.
  • keys and cash;
  • precious metals and products from them;

  • glasses and contact lenses without factory packaging;
  • perishable foodstuffs.

What is the best thing to carry in your checked baggage?

We want to talk about the things that are best carried in checked baggage, as it is more convenient, safer and will not bring any hassle. In addition, there are a number of goods that are prohibited from being carried in hand luggage - their necessarily must be taken in luggage.

  • Outerwear and shoes. Not because they are forbidden to be carried in hand luggage, but for the reason that it is much more convenient than stuffing bulky things into a small bag that you can take on the plane.
  • Manicure accessories and sets. Almost all airlines have banned nail scissors, nail files, eyebrow tweezers and any other sharp objects from being carried on board.
  • Beverages. All liquids larger than 100 ml are not allowed in carry-on baggage. Pack them properly and put them in your suitcase.
  • Gel goods and products. For example, black and red caviar, soft cheeses, peanut butter, and many other products of a similar consistency are considered liquids. They are always removed from hand luggage, unless they were bought in a duty-free shop (Duty Free).
  • Cosmetics and perfumery. Many of these commodities are also classified as liquids. This category includes not only perfumes, deodorants and sprays, but even such seemingly “solid” cosmetics as mascara and foundation.

How to choose the right suitcase for luggage

The choice of the suitcase itself also plays a role in transportation. You can read more about how to choose the right suitcase and what are their differences here, but for now, briefly about the important. The main thing that suitcase met the minimum allowance at 158 cm and contained 23 kg of weight without cracking at the seams. According to the material of manufacture of your choice:

  • lighter, but not always comfortable canvas material. The lighter the suitcase itself, the more you can put in it;
  • heavier but durable polycarbonate. Such suitcases protect the contents well, but reduce the useful weight and volume.

The color scheme is purely a matter of taste, but a bright suitcase is easier to recognize. Keep in mind that ideally, the suitcase should “unfold” a little in breadth, in the event that you need to pack bulky items. Make sure that even in the unfolded state it does not exceed the allowance.

How to properly pack a suitcase

Try not to overload your suitcase. Make a list of what you will really need, without taking into account the change of outfits 3-4 times a day. We recommend that you make a basic list of necessary things once, and with each new flight, supplement it with those things that are determined by the nature and purpose of a particular flight.

You should never take a full suitcase to your destination, because on the way back there will definitely be new purchases, gifts or souvenirs, often unplanned.

In addition to putting (as a rule) a lot of necessary things in a suitcase, it is necessary to do this in such a way as not to damage fragile items, and ideally not to wrinkle clothes and shoes. Nowadays, there are several good methods on how to properly pack a suitcase, which describe in detail how best to fold things so that they take up a minimum of space while maintaining a “marketable” appearance.

Is it worth it to wrap a suitcase with a film

For security reasons, it is highly advisable to wrap your luggage with a film before checking it in, which will protect not only from damage, but also from possible theft. Since this service is usually not very cheap (10–12 euros), you can wrap your suitcase with cling film yourself before leaving or directly at the airport building.

How to check in and drop off your luggage at the airport

At the airport, the passenger, together with their baggage, must go through a clearance process called baggage check-in. This action is a mere formality and takes no more than five minutes. During check-in, the airline checks in baggage and accepts it for transportation at its own risk.

There are two ways to check in your luggage:

  • at the baggage drop desk;
  • at the check-in counter.
Baggage tag

At both counters, baggage check-in is carried out in the same way as follows. The passenger gives his luggage to the employee and shows boarding pass. The employee checks whether the baggage complies with the baggage allowance and registers it in the system, after which, depending on the number of pieces of baggage, prints luggage tags and glues them on each suitcase. The passenger must receive the same number baggage checks, which may also be referred to as tear-off baggage tags. They will be required for baggage identification at the airport of arrival.

Important! Be sure to check the correctness of the receipts and whether the tags are well glued. If they come off during transportation or flight, the luggage will be lost

In some major airports, you can see such a modern novelty as automatic baggage claim(self-service baggage drop-off), which is the most fast way go through baggage check-in. However, unfortunately, so far only the most technically equipped airports in the world are equipped with automatic counters.

Declaring the value of baggage

FRAGILE

As a general rule, passengers are asked to wear a FRAGILE sticker as a precautionary measure when carrying food or exotic fruits. Sometimes it really helps.

Do not forget that when transporting fragile items in a suitcase, you should make sure that they are well packed.

Customs control of checked baggage

Pre-flight clearance is as follows - first, the passenger, clothes and personal belongings in the pockets.

For checked baggage simplified order customs operations, which means that the customs control of baggage is carried out without presenting it to the customs authority directly by the passenger.

The simplified procedure does not eliminate the need to comply with the norms and rules of customs legislation. , the passenger, by default, declares that there are no goods in his baggage that are subject to customs declaration in writing and / or are prohibited for transportation. The confirmation of the passenger's application is.

How to collect your checked baggage upon arrival

Band conveyer

After you get off the plane and pass through the passport control area, you go to the hall where the conveyor belts for baggage claim are located. As a rule, several electronic monitors are also installed in the hall, on which you can see all the relevant information on which conveyor the baggage of a particular flight will be issued. Above each belt conveyor hangs a board with information about the flight. Find yours, wait for your suitcase, after which you can go to the customs control area and exit.

Baggage damage

If upon receipt of the suitcase you find that it is damaged, you should immediately contact the airport staff and draw up a special report. In the event that it is possible to prove that there were valuable things in the suitcase that were damaged during transportation, you can count on compensation for losses. However, in practice this is very difficult to do.

Non-arrival and/or loss of baggage

Unfortunately, it also happens that luggage does not fall into the hands of its owner at all after the flight. This rarely happens, but it does happen. According to statistics, in 2015, there were approximately 6.5 lost suitcases per 1,000 passengers. This is two times less than it was in 2007.

If all the suitcases on the conveyor belt have already been sorted out, but yours is still missing, the first thing to do is to contact the airport staff and check the “forgotten baggage” in a special room, it could get there either by mistake or if you went through passport control for a long time . If there was no luggage there, you should write a special act on the letterhead of the airline (similarly, as in the case of damage), which describes in detail both the suitcase itself and its contents. A pre-taken photo will come in handy, as well as the “special signs” of your suitcase: bright stickers, unusual color, shape, and other differences.

As a rule, the absence of luggage at the destination is due to the fact that it was mistakenly loaded onto another plane, which means that after a few days of searching, luggage will be found. In this case, the airline, at its own expense, must deliver the suitcase to the address indicated by the passenger. In 2015, about 85% of lost luggage was returned to passengers by courier within 36 hours.

If lost luggage could not be found, then the passenger can claim compensation up to 20 dollars for each kilogram of weight on international flights, and on domestic flights - no more than 600 rubles (if the suitcase was not with a declared value). The act of loss is considered within 30 days, after which the passenger receives an official response with a notification of compensation.

Separately, I would like to say that staying in a foreign city without checked baggage, and therefore without most of your own things, is definitely a stressful situation. Therefore, the suitcase should not contain any of the essentials. They should always be taken in hand luggage.

The information provided is only general rules for luggage transportation and important tips for our passengers. Each airline independently and individually determines the standard quantity and weight of luggage allowed on a given route. Therefore, in order to obtain specific information, each passenger must familiarize himself with the transportation of a particular carrier.

By twentymindsomething Flickr

Checked luggage is transported in the luggage compartment of the aircraft. Passengers hand it over at the time of check-in. Such cargo must be properly packed and closed, and its contents securely protected from pressure damage from other suitcases. It must also comply with the restrictions imposed by individual air carriers.

For each suitcase and bag is issued baggage tag, the other end of which is given to the passenger. It is the basis for the identification of luggage upon arrival and complaints in case of damage or loss. From this point on, the responsibility for it is on the side of the carrier.

Carriage allowances

There are no internationally established rules regarding the weight of luggage. Permissible weight luggage on the plane varies depending on the company the passenger uses. However, all airlines have their own franchise system - the weight and amount of baggage that can be carried in the hold of the aircraft.

carrier rule

This rule states that on multi-airline flights, the baggage rules of the airline that travels the geographically longest and longest leg of the journey apply.

Dimensions

The amount of luggage depends on the type, booking class and route:

By Masashi Yanagiya Flickr
  • 150 cm - the maximum baggage size for most airlines, calculated based on the sum of three values;
  • 20-32 kg is this weight range for budget airlines;
  • 1-4 - allowed number of suitcases.

For security reasons, checked baggage is subject to certain restrictions.

  • Companies that operate regular flights.

Allowed free transportation things depends on the reserved class of service and the status of the passenger:

  1. Economy class - 1 baggage up to 23 kg.
  2. Economy premium class - 2 suitcases, each 23 kg.
  3. Business class - 2 luggage, each up to 32 kg.
  4. First class - 3 bags, each up to 32 kg.
  • The franchise of airlines making charter flights is about 15 kg.

Some companies charge the weight of luggage, including the deductible. Therefore, in order to avoid unpleasant surprises, it is necessary to clarify the permitted weight and fees for exceeding the dimensions of luggage. There are also loyalty cards in international airlines, which allow you to carry more things for free, regardless of the class of service.

Some restrictions

It is forbidden to separate weight limits. For example, if two passengers are flying, who can carry luggage of 15 kg each, in such a situation it is impossible to take one luggage weighing 20 and the other 10 kg. It is not allowed to combine weight restrictions - for two people of 15 kg each, you cannot take a suitcase weighing 30 kg.

Many companies turn a blind eye to a common suitcase exceeding the weight limit for 1 person and are rarely outraged, but still you should be more careful and take an extra bag to shift some of the cargo into it if you start having problems and requests to pay for excess weight.

Suitcases for children

Checking luggage for infants is prohibited. If a child is traveling without a separate seat for less than two years, you can register for him:

  • baggage weighing less than 12 kg and dimensions not exceeding 55x35x25 cm;
  • checked packages up to 10 kg (for children's tickets).

Children aged two and over enjoy the same rates as adults.

Children's transport (sleeping baskets, strollers, car seats) can be taken on board as hand luggage, provided there is free space. Different conditions apply for different kinds and types of fixtures:

  • the stroller should not exceed the dimensions of 15x30x100 cm;
  • collapsible equipment that replaces hand luggage must not exceed 55x35x25cm.

Otherwise, the items are packed and checked in as checked baggage. Any transport must be packed in a case that completely hides it.

What can you take into the hold of the aircraft

Food

As for the transportation of foodstuffs in the hold, they can be transported well packed, in inseparable packages to prevent possible disasters (perishable and fragile goods are transported at the peril and risk of passengers).

Animal products (meat, milk) may contain pathogenic substances that are responsible for the transmission of infectious diseases, so their transportation must comply with the legislation of the countries where they are imported.

Alcohol

When entering Russia, one passenger can carry a total of 5 liters of alcohol with a strength of less than 700C. If the norm is exceeded, it is mandatory to have a receipt for its purchase, declare the goods and pay taxes.

For everyone domestic flights countries, adult passengers carry drinks with a strength of up to 240C without restrictions. In some countries, the import-call of alcoholic beverages has its own rules, which may change and be adjusted.

Electronic devices and elements

You can carry any electronic devices in your checked baggage, including mobile phone, laptop computer, tablet devices, MP3 player, hair straightener, cameras, electric shaver.

Oversized dimensions

Baggage exceeding 158 cm is considered large and can be carried at an additional cost. However, in any case, its weight should not exceed 32 kg. If the luggage exceeds 300 cm and weighs more than 32 kg, it must be registered as a freight shipment.

Special cargo

Luggage, which, due to size or content, falls out of the norm, is called special. It can be sports equipment, musical instruments or animals. Some airlines, under certain conditions, allow special baggage to be taken as hand luggage on the plane.

Musical instruments

Many carriers allow delicate musical instruments in the cabin, such as guitars, which must be packed in a padded case. All other instruments that are oversized but not larger than a cello must be carried in the hold of the aircraft.

Animals

By Sam Howzit Flickr

Large animals must be kept in special air-conditioned areas of the cargo hold. Their transportation is carried out in a closed container of sufficient volume for a particular pet, in which it is necessary to provide access to drinking water. An additional fee is charged for transportation.

Sports equipment

Baggage that is associated with sports is called sports luggage. It can be skis, diving equipment, a bicycle. Usually such cargo is very large and heavy, and most often transported in the cargo area of the aircraft. However, smaller items such as a skateboard are also not allowed as carry-on baggage as they can be used as impact weapons.

Additional fees apply for sports equipment that requires special packaging. Transportation of sporting and hunting weapons must be registered. Ammunition must be transported separately from weapons, accompanied by the appropriate permits.

Adjustable number of items:

  1. Perfumes and aerosols must not exceed 2 kg or 2 liters per person and 0.5 kg or 0.5 liters per item.
  2. Weapons - you can carry knives, ammunition smaller than 19.1 mm caliber, ammunition for hunting or sports and firearms up to 5 kg, subject to police regulations and the laws of the country of destination. They need to be transported in one bag, but pack all the parts separately. Weapons may not be placed among the passenger's personal belongings.
  3. Cartridges - provided that they are packed in a hard case. It should be stored in the original packaging and the entire space should be filled with cushioning material to prevent slipping.

Prohibited Baggage and Travel Restrictions

Items that are prohibited to carry in the hold of the aircraft:

  • explosive and incendiary substances, including mines, grenades, fireworks and other pyrotechnics, smoke canisters, dynamite, gunpowder;

  • firearms - pistols, shotguns, rifles, parts;
  • paintball inventory;
  • tools - drills, saws, portable chainsaws, screwdrivers, hammers, pliers;
  • dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) up to 1.5 kg.

Some rules for packing baggage

To prevent the suitcase from getting stuck on the conveyor belt, make sure that all loose straps are tied or removed, all latches are securely fastened, and retractable handles are removed.

golden rules

  1. Always keep an eye on your things. Never leave your luggage unattended, even for a short time. Otherwise, she will become an object of police surveillance and may eventually be destroyed.
  2. Do not take luggage from third parties - never agree to look after bags or packages from people you do not know, regardless of motives and reasons.
  3. Clearly state your name and address on the inside and outside of your luggage.
  4. Jewelry, small electronics, money, keys, medicines, documents and other valuables are best taken in hand luggage.
  5. All delicate and fragile items should be wrapped in soft cloth or paper.
  6. Remove all tags from suitcases from previous trips. In some cases, this may result in items being sent to a different airport.
  7. To avoid mistakes upon arrival, mark your suitcase with a characteristic sign - a ribbon, a sticker, etc.

A passenger who flies by plane must distinguish between checked-in baggage and hand baggage. These are completely different concepts, and if you distinguish between them, you can save a lot. Baggage is a large suitcase that is checked in upon boarding. It must be verified and registered. Hand luggage is a travel bag or backpack that a passenger can carry on board. It can be of such weight and dimensions that you can put it in place yourself. But how much hand luggage you can take on a plane and what exactly can be placed in such a backpack depends on the airline's standards.

What can be carried in hand luggage?

    Medicines and baby food. Meals must be separately packaged and must be presented at check-in. But in order to carry medicine on the plane, you need to have the appropriate prescription with the seal and signature of the doctor. This is especially true for aerosols and preparations that contain narcotic substances.

    Liquids. Here, some air carriers limit the volume very strictly. You must contact the airline in advance for information. To freely transport a certain amount of liquid, you need to follow some rules. All tubes must be packed in one bag. Any liquid substances must be carried in containers, and their volume must not exceed 100 ml. The tube of liquid itself should be packed in a plastic bag with a zipper.

    Hygiene products. You can take almost everything, but most of them are liquids, which is why they are transported according to the relevant rules. But aerosols are not allowed at all.

    Electronics. You can take any gadgets with you on the plane. They are personal belongings, not hand luggage, so they are not included in the 10 kg weight limit. During landing, they usually check large electronics: a laptop or a camera.

    Food. You can take any food on board the aircraft - dry or solid. But with regard to conservation, there is a restriction on the liquid.

    Duty free zone. This issue must always be considered separately. Everything that you buy directly at DutyFree before boarding can be transported, as long as you do not break the packaging. The only thing is that all this fits into a weight of 10 kg. If your hand luggage exceed the volume, then you will have to pay a fine.

In addition, many airlines allow you to take personal items with you, the list of which includes: umbrellas, pillows, blankets, handbags, books, and so on.

It is forbidden to take:

    Liquids up to one hundred milliliters in volume.

    Hazardous chemical or biological substances.

    Dangerous objects, weapons.

    Products of animal origin, except sandwiches.

    Explosive items.

How much hand luggage can I take on a plane

If a passenger is traveling in economy class, he can carry a bag for one piece of luggage with him on board the air transport, and in business class it is allowed to take two full seats.

The term "one place" means a bag with the sum of the sides in three dimensions (width, height, length add up) up to 115 centimeters. The standard flight bag measures 55*40*20. But the weight of different air carriers may be different. It may depend on the distance or proximity of the route, or the type of aircraft. For example, Aeroflot allows the carriage of up to 10 kg of hand luggage, KLM - about 12 kg, Lufthansa - up to 8 kg. At the same time, do not forget that you will lift your bag into place on your own.

Most carriers in Europe and the CIS countries consider the weight of hand luggage in the range of 8-10 kg as the norm. Before the flight, it is necessary to clarify this information with the company so that you do not have to pay extra. Some air carriers allow overload, others force you to buy second place even with a slight overweight of 300-500 grams.

Some Canadian and US carriers provide a full two pieces of carry-on baggage, even for economy class passengers. This is a great way to save money.

In order not to pay a fine, you must definitely familiarize yourself with the requirements of the airline regarding personal belongings and how much hand luggage you can take on the plane.

At the end of 2017, President Putin V.V. signed a law amending the General Rules air transportation passengers, baggage, cargo and requirements for servicing passengers, consignors, consignees. According to the adopted law, Russian airlines introduce uniform rules for carrying baggage on an airplane, with the exception of Aeroflot's subsidiary, Pobeda.

Actual!

Let's take a look at what rules are relevant in 2020 for carrying luggage on an airplane.

According to the adopted November law, the new baggage allowance allows for one piece of a bag or suitcase weighing up to 30 kg. Less is allowed, more is not. Individual baggage is issued for each passenger.

Important! The allowable weight of things depends on the ticket category: economy, business or first class. The higher the class of the ticket, the more opportunities are provided for the amount of luggage.

Separate baggage can be issued for a child under two years old. The weight of the bag must not exceed 10 kg.

There is no single global standard for all airlines. It is worth focusing on the country to which the passenger is flying. For example, when traveling to Dubai, objects and literary publications of a religious orientation are prohibited for transportation, with the exception of Islam. Also consider the restrictions of each airline individually.

Excess baggage

So, if a passenger has purchased an economy class ticket, then he can carry baggage weighing up to 23 kg. With a larger load, the traveler undertakes to pay extra, but some air carriers allow a small excess without additional payment.

If you know in advance that baggage will fall into the excess category, check with your air carrier for the cost of the surcharge.

Baggage over 30 kg - heavy baggage

Carriage of luggage on the plane: the new rules equate the weight of more than 30 kg to the heavy category. Previously, the maximum weight was up to 32 kg.

For such loads, you should pay extra for each kilogram. There are no uniform tariffs, each company sets the price at its own discretion.

In addition to excess weight, there may be an excess of dimensions in the sum of three dimensions. These things include:

  • mountain skis and other large sports equipment;
  • musical instruments, for example, guitar, double bass;
  • household appliances such as a refrigerator.

For the transportation of such goods, a preliminary agreement with the company is required. Before the flight, contact the support service. On the day of departure, it is better to arrive at the airport in advance, as it will take more time to check in a special cargo.

Some carriers allow ski equipment to be carried free of charge in winter time or diving boards to resorts.

Companies have the right to refuse transportation oversized cargo if the cargo compartments are too small or there is not enough space.

Baggage free ticket

A number of airlines support the no-baggage service. According to him, the passenger flies only with hand luggage. This method has both advantages and disadvantages. The pluses include the low cost of the flight. The downside is that the tickets are non-refundable.

Consolidated baggage

For couples, traveling families, colleagues and friends, there is a luggage pooling service. You can put all things in one suitcase, which will be listed as one piece of luggage.

Fragile luggage

When transporting glassware, electronics and decor items, many passengers worry about the safety of things, because most often at airports suitcases are treated carelessly, thrown into a general dump.

In such situations, the traveler can check in baggage marked “fragile”. To do this, provide information when registering things, and the suitcase will not be allowed on the tape. It will be carried by loaders to the luggage compartment.

Note! The possibility of handling fragile baggage does not guarantee the safety of the passenger's belongings.

Fragile items that meet the parameters of hand luggage are best taken into the cabin. The main thing is that things do not contain liquid. Jars with jam and compotes will have to be abandoned by handing them over to the luggage compartment.

hand luggage

How much luggage is allowed on the plane? Amendments to the law on air travel that came into force in November limited the minimum weight of hand luggage. Previously, it was possible to carry at least 10 kg for non-refundable and refundable tickets for free, now the limit is from 5 kg.

Most carriers allowed a 10 kg suitcase to be carried on board. For transportation in the luggage compartment took an additional fee.

The new law means that the airline is obliged to take in the cabin from 5 kg, but if desired, it is possible to increase the weight upwards. For example, "S7", "UTair" and "Aeroflot" announced their intention to leave the previous norms of 10 kg.

Aeroflot's official website currently has the following rules:

In addition, the list of free items for carrying on board in addition to hand luggage has undergone changes. We'll talk about them below.

What items can be taken into the cabin without being checked in as hand luggage?

According to the old requirements, it was allowed to take the following things to the salon for free without weighing, tagging and registration:

  • costume;
  • notebook;
  • video camera;
  • camera;
  • mobile phone;
  • baby food for the duration of the flight in an unrestricted flight;
  • carrying for the baby (folding cradle or folding stroller);
  • books, magazines, newspapers;
  • outerwear;
  • women's handbag;
  • briefcase;
  • folder with papers and documents;
  • cane;
  • crutches;
  • umbrella;
  • bouquet of flowers.

Now the umbrella, laptop and cell phone are excluded from the list. The Ministry of Transport explained these changes by the possibility of removing the listed items in the bag.

In addition, the list of free items for transportation was supplemented with a new item - a backpack. The management of Pobeda Airlines confirmed the information that the transportation of backpacks will be allowed if its size fits into the established norms of the company.

For Pobeda, hand luggage restrictions will be 36 × 30 × 27, while the minimum ticket price will start from five hundred rubles.

Things allowed in hand luggage and with you

A passenger may wish to keep a number of items with him or in hand luggage. These include:

  • carbon dioxide balloons (used to activate artificial limbs);
  • eyeglass repair tools, including a screwdriver less than 50 mm long;
  • lighter or non-hazardous matches (only with you);
  • pacemaker;
  • other pharmaceutical devices, including on radioactive isotopes, with lithium batteries. It is allowed to keep only with you;
  • robot toy;
  • razors, including disposable ones;
  • eyelash curlers;
  • nitroglycerin tablets or spray for treatment;
  • oxygen cylinders for medical purposes;
  • injection needles for a passenger with diabetes or specialized medicines.

Actions on loss

No one is protected from losing things on air travel. Items go missing when loaded or loaded into the baggage compartment, they are accidentally sent on another flight.

In case of loss of personal belongings, follow the instructions:

  1. Make sure you have your luggage receipt on hand;
  2. Apply with a leaflet to the department of search for missing things;
  3. Write a statement;

Within three weeks, the carrier chosen by the passenger is obliged to find the items and return them. The parcel is delivered to your home for free, and the client does not have to go anywhere and pay for anything.

When returning damaged baggage or missing it after three weeks, you can contact the company with a request to compensate for the losses.

If the carrier refused to compensate for the damage, the citizen has the right to request a written refusal, with which to go to court for further proceedings.

The Montreal Convention has consolidated an international agreement that stipulates the maximum possible compensation for the loss of a bag - 1131 SDR (artificial reserve and means of payment issued by the IMF). It's about $1500.

In practice, the figure depends on the specific carrier. Foreign companies pay an average of $20/kg. Major foreign airlines may pay the excess amount according to their internal rules. Russian airlines pay about 600 rubles each.

If a passenger has lost baggage while on an international flight, they should apply for a search no later than one week after the date of receipt of the items.

On domestic flights, it is allowed to leave a claim within six months from the date of loss.

Standard compensation requires a description of the missing baggage. If you have receipts for lost items, you can present them with a statement. Then you should expect a full or partial refund.

Advice! If you are transporting fragile or valuable items, insure them before flying with a declared value by paying an additional fee.
