What you should definitely visit in Lviv. Where to go in Lviv: attractions, interesting places, cafes and restaurants

Good afternoon dear readers! We recently visited again colorful city Lvov. We only had one day to spend there. We decided not to waste time in vain, but to spend it with benefit and pleasure. In the article I will tell what to see and where to go, as well as how to meet and see . I'll show route city walks.

The legendary Lviv does not lose its popularity, but rather becomes more and more touristy, both in Ukraine and abroad. This time Lviv was a transit point on the way to the Czech Republic. Our independent route Kiev-Lviv-Prague we decided to carry out from Lviv, and not directly from Kiev.

Our first was in December, I remember we took two days off in the middle of the week and went on an adventure. Then we had enough time to see the main sights of Lviv and visit many colorful establishments tourist capital Ukraine.

How to get to Lviv

You can get to Lviv in different ways. We often choose railway transportation, well, or road trips. It is rare that our choice falls on buses. Roads in Ukraine are not so hot, and this type of transport is not always comfortable. Although there are good carriers, for example, such as. We managed to evaluate them in our travels, I wrote about them separately, I will not stop.

Traveling by train to Lviv is quite convenient and, moreover, budget-friendly. You sit down in the evening, and in the morning you are already there. There is time to relax, straighten your legs or start celebrating the trip..) Moreover, now you can buy railway tickets in Ukraine online, which greatly simplifies the procedure and saves time.

One more good news! Now a high-speed Intercity train runs to Lviv, only 5 hours on the road. We rode it back (from Lvov to Kiev). Departs at 18 o'clock, and at 23 already in Kiev. We were pleasantly surprised by the conditions and comfort. Too bad the sockets are only near the window.

I love these trips it's like a separate adventure. I do not argue that the car is much more comfortable, but in our case this option was the most suitable.

Lviv in one day. Arrival

We arrived at the railway station quite early, around six in the morning. Surely you immediately have a question, what to do at such an early hour, because everything is still closed?! But we know that one institution is definitely working, and this is Kryivka on Rynok Square.

Kryivka is one institution in the center of Lviv, which operates around the clock. Of course, not everyone arrives so early, but maybe this information will be useful for someone.

Public transport began its work, but we wanted to take a walk. Despite the early time - the city does not think to sleep. Someone goes to work, and someone only returns from night festivities.)

For your information:

  1. WITH railway station Tram number 1 goes to Rynok Square (from 06:00 to 22:00)
  2. From the center to the bus station can be reached by trolleybus number 5 (Shota Rustaveli St. - Stryiska St. - Bus Station)
  3. From the central bus station to the main railway station, and vice versa, you can take a bus or minibus number 10.
  4. From the center to the airport (along Listopadovoy Chin St. (back S. Krushelnitskaya St.) - Metropolitan Andrey St. - Turgenev St. (back Antonovich St.) - Kopystinskogo St. (back Okruzhnaya St.) - Lyubinska St.) by trolleybus No. 9.

Walk to the center from the Lviv railway station for about half an hour. We enjoyed the walk very much. We cheered up and worked up an appetite.

Kryivka surprised us. At the entrance, a man dressed in a UPA uniform drowsily demanded to go out, after which we went inside the "dugout". It was a surprise to see so many people, because it was already morning! But on the other hand, what did we expect? People come to Lviv to relax, feel the color and atmosphere, especially since the weekend is ahead.

We did not stand out and started our morning not with coffee, but with dumplings and mead. The mood is fine, the route is laid, we leave the dugout.

Lviv in one day. What to see and where to go.

If you are not yet in the center of Lviv, the first thing you need to do is drive or go to Rynok Square. This is the central square of Lviv. The main attractions of the city are located there. Opposite the same Kryivka is the Lviv City Hall. It offers a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings. The entrance for visitors is open, so do not be lazy and go up to the roof. In addition, the Latin Cathedral or the Church of the Assumption is clearly visible from the town hall Holy Mother of God which you can then visit. The outer walls of the temple are painted in a pleasant sand color. This is the only preserved building of the Gothic architecture of medieval Lviv. The temple has a three-nave structure, complemented by dark green domes.

Near Rynok Square there are two more temples worth visiting - the Dominican Cathedral and the Bernardine Monastery. I wrote about them when I described the sights of Lviv.

In the same place on the square there is a coffee house-museum "Coffee digger". Her surroundings are impressive. I was delighted with the atmosphere and almost believed that coffee is mined there. Right there, on Drukarska street, 2 is located old pharmacy museum. She is still working. The museum features 16 pharmaceutical rooms with unique exhibits.

You can also have a cup of coffee in between sightseeing at the Golden Dukat coffee shop, which is located near Rynok Square, and eat at the Gas Lamp or the House of Legends. The establishments are incredibly colorful.

Near the central square is the Solomiya Krushelnytska Opera and Ballet Theatre. A cozy square with benches leads to it, where both guests and residents of Lviv like to sit.If on one side the square rests on the theater, then on the other it goes to the monument to Adam Mickiewicz and the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

From here we take a tram and go to the Lychakiv cemetery or walk 25-30 minutes to the High Castle park. Choose one because each of these places will take at least an hour, not including travel time. These sights are not similar at all, but very interesting. You can read about the Lychakiv cemetery at the link, there is a lot of information and photos. About the "High Castle" I want to say a few words. This place is popular not for its castle. Unfortunately, it has not been preserved; from the mountain where it was built, an amazing panorama of Old Lviv opens up. The unique observation deck of the "High Castle", whose height is 413 meters above sea level, has no analogues in Europe.

Writing how to get to the Lychakiv cemetery. Shuttle taxis that go along Lychakivska Street (to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul). Tram number 10 or bus number 29 runs from the railway station (5 minutes walk from the stop). From the center of Lviv, Podvalna Street (near the monument to I. Fedorov), tram number 7 goes to the museum, you need to get off on the street

Pekarskaya.

Where to buy souvenirs in Lviv

You can't leave Lviv without souvenirs. They can be purchased in shops near Rynok Square. The range will surprise you. For sweets, you definitely need to go to. There is a huge selection of goodies - from sweets to chocolate products (hearts, shoes, cute little men, etc.). In addition to sweets, coffee is brought from Lviv. It can be purchased at the Kava Mine mentioned above.

If you would like to complete your independent walk in Lviv, you can take a guide. them on central square Market abound. In addition, you can arrange the services of a guide in advance on the Internet before the trip.

Lviv is the cultural capital of Ukraine

Lviv is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, and maybe the oldest of them. Well, by today it has already managed to acquire the status of the cultural capital of our country. It is unlikely that there will be at least one person in the world who has been here and was dissatisfied with his journey. Actually, there are a lot of reasons for that, but first things first.

  • Rynok Square

Kryivka (Kryivka)

Perhaps the best institution in terms of collected stereotypes about Ukrainians you will not find anywhere else. The institution itself is made in the style of the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army), all decor items and even people here have a special, unique charm. From the outside, the building is inconspicuous, there is no sign or sign, but inside it just opens a portal to Ukraine in the early forties of the twentieth century.

Password to enter the institution

However, to get here, you need to know the password to enter. Well, everything is very simple here, and the smartest of you have probably already guessed about it). And the password sounds: “Glory to Ukraine!”, after the guard answers: “Glory to the heroes!”, they will pour you and let you inside. Having a drink at the entrance is an obligatory event, but very pleasant.

The cuisine here is pretty good.

As they say, everything is simple, but tasteful. Basically, you will be offered to taste the diet of a UPA soldier from the Second World War. Also, from time to time, some interactive scenes are held for visitors to catch “Muscovites”. Everything should be treated with humor, because this is just a mockery of stereotypes about Lviv)

address: pl. Market, 14

Lviv coffee digger (Lviv coffee digger)

A very unique establishment. As we all know, coffee is not mined, but the cultural capital can afford to have fun in its own way. The idea here is built just the same on the absurdity of the idea itself.

Coming here you will have a choice, you can take a cup of hot coffee and sit on the sun-drenched terrace, or you can go down to the depths and try a drink in a very non-standard atmosphere. Well, from myself I can only add that the trip to the very depths of the mine is worth doing, because when else can you get a chance to savor coffee while being so deep?).

This institution is very difficult to lose sight of, as it is located almost in the very center, and every now and then walking around the city you will stumble upon it.

Rynok Square in Lviv

home landmark of Lviv - its historical center, Rynok Square. All buildings of the square are architectural monuments, but the central City Hall stands out in particular. The government of Lviv still sits in a stone building to this day, but tourists have the opportunity to go on an excursion here. 350 steps lead to the roof of the Town Hall, from where you can see the whole city. Also on Rynok Square is the Italian courtyard with a Viennese coffee house, the Black Stone and the Royal Stone (they house a historical museum).

Cathedral Latin Cathedral on Cathedral Square

The Cathedral Latin Cathedral on Cathedral Square, 1 combines Gothic and Baroque. This is the main Roman Catholic church in Lviv, which has preserved the old organ and stained glass windows of Jan Matejko. Next to the church stands the Boim chapel, one of the few remaining tombs. The design of the chapel in black tones with numerous figures from biblical stories and history is interesting.

dominican cathedral

On Museum Square, 1 stands the Dominican Cathedral - main monument Baroque Lviv. Now it is a temple of Greek Catholics; organ concerts and exhibited an exhibition of the Museum of Religion. The Cathedral of St. George on the square of the same name can compete with the Dominican for the title of a baroque monument. This is the main center of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, architectural ensemble XVIII century. The complex is included in the World Heritage List.

Where else can you go in Lviv

If fate gave you the opportunity to stay here longer than 1 day, then you should devote time to the architectural masterpieces of the old city. In general, there are a lot of them in the cultural capital, literally every building of the old quarter is already a whole story with many interesting twists, oh, if there was time ... But time is a very limited resource, so we advise you to stop your eyes on the following examples:

Opera theatre

Lviv Opera Theater named after. S. Krushelnitskaya in Lviv is one of the most beautiful theaters in Europe along with the Vienna and Odessa operas. On the facade of the building you will see the figures "Love", "Life", "Glory", "Art", "Victory". If possible, take a couple of precious hours and enjoy the theatrical performance. There is something to see here, because this theater is considered one of the oldest in all of Europe, and local artists carefully honor traditions and diligently try to increase them every day.

Where is the Opera House

Opera theatre them. S. Krushelnytska is located at the end of Svoboda Avenue. The building is designed in such a way that it is illuminated as much as possible inside. natural light. Of interest is the hall of mirrors and the central hall, which regularly lead tours. But it's better to come here to listen to the performance.

High Castle Park

What could be more pleasant than an evening rest in a quiet and cozy park? In Lviv, this place is rightfully considered the abode of peace and quiet. There are places here that offer simply fantastic views of the city, since the park itself is located above the level of city streets. If you get a chance to come here early in the morning, then do not miss it, because very often in the morning you can contemplate fogs, and in total with the old city, the panorama of which opens here, the sight is simply amazing.

…there is an impressive view of Lviv.

The High Castle Park at an altitude of 413 meters used to be a real place for a fortified fortress. But in 1648, after the capture of Lviv by Maxim Krivonos, the castle was destroyed, and a park was created on the vacant site. The stone of the walls served as the basis of modern observation deck, which offers an impressive view of Lviv. There is also a television center and a radio tower.

Lychakiv cemetery

The Lychakiv cemetery at 95 Pekarskaya Street is known for its history and size. On an area of 40 hectares there are more than 3,500 monuments and graves, not counting the large military cemetery-memorial. The Lychakiv cemetery is a museum, excursions are held here. The oldest graves date back to the end of the 19th century; Ivan Franko, Solomiya Krushelnitskaya and many other famous people are also buried here.

The highlight of Lviv is the restaurants of the “!FEST” chain

The highlight of Lviv are the restaurants of the "!FEST" network, known for their originality and ideological spirit. Within the framework of the project, for example, the cafe "Kryivka" (the atmosphere of the rebel armies, Rynok Square, 14), the Jewish cafe "Under the Golden Rose" (it is necessary to bargain here, Staroevreyskaya str., 37) and the "Lviv Coffee Mine" (in where you can visit a real mine, Market Square, 10).

What to see and where to visit in Lviv – Conclusion

I hope we helped you find out what to see and where to visit in Lviv.

Successful travels around Ukraine and the world!!!

Lviv is atmospheric European city to which you want to return again and again. This is one of the few cities in the post-Soviet space where you can walk for hours and not see a single blatantly Soviet-era house. The center is quite large compared to neighboring cities - Ivano-Frankivsk, Uzhgorod and Chernivtsi) reminds of Austria-Hungary and the Commonwealth. And only along the edges of the city - a typical Soviet building, but even in the sleeping quarters there is quite a pleasant atmosphere of Europe. Of course, a lot of guidebooks have been written about Lviv, but since I have visited this city four times, I consider myself entitled to highlight the main sights of Lviv and advise you on interesting places to visit in Lviv.

City Hall

In the very center of Lviv rises the building of the town hall in the style of Viennese classicism of the first half of the 19th century. - the residence of the city council. Entrance to the town hall is free, but a visit to the panoramic tower will cost about 0.5 euros. After climbing 408 steep steps and examining the mechanical movement of the clock, you will find yourself at the height of a bird's eye view, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city, the best in Lviv.

Rynok Square

A perfectly square square, in the center of which the town hall rises, and at the corners there are four fountains. In the center of each of them is a stone sculpture of classical Roman deities - Neptune, Amphitrite, Diana, Adonis, made of limestone by the sculptor Hartmann Witwer - a tribute to the Austro-Hungarian imperial classicism.

The first mention of the existence of fountains dates back to January 1815. The sculptures represent the allegories of the earth - Diana and Adonis, as well as the allegories of water - Neptune and Amphitrite (his wife in classical mythology). In order to prevent drought, July 23 was usually celebrated as the feast of Neptune, it was respected by merchants, sailors, and fishermen. In the images, Neptune is always with a crown on his head and a trident in his hand. The trident of Neptune extracts water from sources, the bowels of the earth and symbolizes the three paths of knowledge.

In the XIV century. around the fountains there was a noisy market, on which there were numerous merchants' shops, stalls and booths for the sale of various goods; here there were thousands of merchants from the East, West, South and North. The market existed until 1944, offering Lviv residents vegetables, fruits, milk, and flowers. Now it is a European square, bustling on weekends. The cafe on the square sells excellent home-made beer and fragrant Lviv coffee.

Ultra-national restaurant Kryjivka

Here, on Rynok Square, opposite the main entrance to the Town Hall, there is a not too conspicuous door to a cafe without a sign, which is called Kryivka - the partisan shovs of the UPA people's army were also called during its struggle with the Soviet, and then with the Nazi invaders. This is an atmospheric cafe, where everything is stylized as the headquarters of the UPA. At the entrance you will be greeted by a warrior in an old uniform with a machine gun, who will definitely ask if there are any “Kids” or “Muscovites” among you. It is necessary to answer: “None, mute”, then he will say “Glory to Ukraine” and, of course, you need to answer “Glory to the Heroes”. For a correct answer, you are poured mead, and for an incorrect one, they shoot you in the air. When you go to the table, look around - newspapers of that time, portraits of Bandera and his associates, old photos hang everywhere.

Of particular interest is the shooting gallery, where you can shoot portraits of Lenin, Stalin and Putin. The menu has extremely funny names - for example, "Moskaliki z tsibuleya". In the toilets are portraits of naked Putin and Hitler in psychedelic colors in the style of Andy Warhol. Periodically, the "guards" shoot blanks at the floor, allegedly finding one of the Muscovites. Of course, this is all for fun - I have repeatedly been to this cafe with friends from Moscow, and they had no problems, although they were sitting a little quieter than usual. Above Krijivka, another atmospheric local attraction is the Jewish "Masonic" restaurant, where they bring menus with huge prices and you have to bargain with the waiter for each dish.

Dominican Cathedral and Museum Square

Central Cathedral Roman Catholic Church in Lvov, called Dominican after the monastic order that built it, is in no way inferior to Krakow in terms of the scale of its architecture. Huge stained-glass windows, the gloomy atmosphere of the church, no restrictions for women in terms of scarves and long dresses (as it infuriates in Orthodox churches), the increased interest of the local population in services in the church - that's what I remember the most. Directly opposite the entrance to the cathedral, on one of the buildings, there is a sign that there used to be the largest brothel in the city. This, by the way, can be found in many Catholic cities - apparently, the monks and priests who, on duty, accepted celibacy, were their main clients.

On Museum Square, where the church is located, another important attraction is the monument to King Danila of Galicia, the most respected historical figure among the locals. There are also several famous Lviv kiosks, which really decorate the city, in contrast to the tin boxes that serve as stalls in other cities. They make good coffee and pastries. Lviv is generally incredibly tasty and cozy city and most importantly, very inexpensive.

Opera House, University and many other houses with "architectural excesses"

The Opera building is impressive with many details (architectural excesses that were banned in the USSR by the 60th year) - molding, sculpture, indirect, bizarre lines - this is what characterizes individual buildings in Lviv, in particular, the Opera House and the University - both of which are located in the very central part of the city and often appear in the photo of this city.

You can't walk past them and not take pictures of some of the details.

Cathedral of St. George

Towering above all, the orange-and-white Cathedral of St. George differs from others in Lviv with its baroque architecture. You have to climb up to reach it, but I recommend taking the time and effort to visit it - in the middle of the city center, in the greenest part of it, this massive building with a huge dome and a stone courtyard is really impressive.

Mount High Castle

An excellent panoramic mountain with a 360-degree view of Lviv is a rarity even for tourist cities. Nothing blocks the view, except perhaps the heads of other tourists, who are usually quite a few here. Yes, and it’s not close to go here - sharply uphill. But it's worth it! After all, from here you can see those areas of Lviv behind the railway that cannot be seen even from the town hall! The view from the High Castle is like from a helicopter!

The mountain opposite the high castle towards the park Shevchenkovsky hai

If you stand on the High Castle mountain facing the center of Lviv, then on the left there will be several more green hills. On the nearest of them there is a cross and there is also a small observation platform. The hill is lower than the Castle, but it should be visited, as there is a more natural atmosphere here - fewer tourists, since only a path goes here, more trees and flowers.

If you go down in the opposite direction from the High Castle, you can go to the huge Shevchenkovsky Hay park. In Lviv, in the warm season, it is especially pleasant to walk through the parks and green hills - and breathe clean air, and look at the city, which now and then opens up before your eyes.

Lychakiv cemetery

It is rare when a trip to a cemetery turns into a walk! In Lviv, this is possible - they even set an entrance fee here, like in a museum. There are a huge number here interesting sculptures- angels, the dead, saints.

You can wander for hours and look at gravestones, try to read the names in Polish, study inscriptions, crosses, monuments. Among them are real works of art sculpture. In addition, this is a very green area with old beautiful trees, hills and views of the new part of the city - quite pleasant and picturesque.

Of course, we must not forget that this is still a cemetery, so thoughts about life and death will visit you, one way or another, during a walk.

Church in the Gothic style of Saints Olga and Elizabeth opposite the railway. station

Somewhat out of the way from the main attractions, but within walking distance of pleasant areas from the center, this Gothic church is located, reminiscent of the Catholic cathedrals of the Czech Republic and Poland. It is also worth it to walk up to it and see this attraction in order to have a complete picture of the diversity of Lviv's architecture.

Yards in the center of Lviv

Many tourists simply pass by without entering the small courtyards behind the arches in the center. But this is almost the main atmospheric attraction of Lviv. Time has stopped here, frozen somewhere in the fifties. It is interesting to look at the life of the locals from the inside, especially since many yards have comfortable benches where you can sit and watch.

The historical heritage of Lviv was formed under the influence of the Commonwealth, Austrian and Russian empires, because in different time the city was part of all these states. From an architectural point of view, Lviv is a real European city, especially since the legacy of the Soviet era was rushed to get rid of in the first years of Ukraine's independence.

The City is actively working on restoration projects, restoring historic buildings and developing infrastructure to attract as many more tourists. Therefore, Lviv is becoming more and more beautiful with every city. Its medieval churches, Baroque palaces and parks delight travelers. The rich collections of Lviv museums consist of priceless works of art, as well as unique handicrafts that tell about a difficult history. Western Ukraine.

The first wooden town hall appeared in Lviv in the middle of the 14th century after the adoption of the Magdeburg law system by the city. It burned down after a few decades. The building of 1835, made in the classical style according to the project of A. Vondrashek, F. Tresher and Yu. Markel, has survived to this day. The palace in the manner of "French" classicism, which belonged to the influential Potocki count family. The Lvov Pototsky Palace was considered one of the most luxurious among the other possessions of this powerful family. Solemn receptions and meetings were held on its territory.

A unique architectural monument of the Renaissance, built in the 16th century for a wealthy merchant of Greek origin K. Kornyakt. After the construction was completed, it immediately became clear that the architect P. Barbon had the most elegant building in all of Lviv. One of the most picturesque places of the palace is the Italian courtyard, modeled on the typical “patios” of Florence. Today, there is a museum on the territory of the mansion.

An architectural monument of the late 19th century, the creation of the Austrian city planners F. Felner and G. Gelmer. The house was built in the style of palace architecture typical for Central Europe. In the period 1918 - 1939. a casino worked in the building, since 1948 it has turned into the House of Scientists. Lvov became in dire need of his own opera stage in late XIX century. At that time the city was part of Austria-Hungary and was known as Lemberg. The theater was built in 1900 in a classical style with baroque and renaissance elements. Its architecture was strongly influenced by the "Viennese pseudo-Renaissance" school. The theater building is decorated central part cities, giving it a resemblance to classical European capitals.

Cathedral of the Greek Catholic Church of Ukraine - UGCC. Previously, a wooden Orthodox church and monastery (until the 14th century) and a Byzantine-style basilica (until the end of the 18th century) were located in its place. The cathedral was built in the Baroque style according to the project of B. Meretin. From 1946 to 1990 it belonged to the Russian Orthodox Church, but then was returned to the UGCC. The temple complex includes a cathedral, the metropolitan's chambers, a terrace, a bell tower, a garden and chapter houses.

Neo-Gothic temple of the early 20th century, which, according to legend, was named after the Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria, better known to the people as Sisi. The architect T. Talevsky worked on the project. The master embodied in his creation the features of North German and French temples, and also added a bit of harsh Romanesque style. Since 1991, the church has been called the Church of St. Olga and Elizabeth. It belongs to the UGCC.

The Catholic Cathedral, which is the only one in Ukraine that has the status of a "minor basilica". In 2001, the temple received Pope John Paul II as a guest of honor. The Latin Cathedral was erected in 1360-1479 according to the project of P. Stecher. Restoration work was carried out in the XVIII, XIX centuries and at the beginning of the 20th century. The architecture of the building is a mixture of baroque, gothic and renaissance styles.

The chapel was erected at the beginning of the 17th century as a family crypt of the Boim family. The construction is notable for the fact that its walls are decorated with sculptural groups depicting scenes from the Bible. The fact is that religious subjects were embodied mainly in painting. Depicting biblical scenes with the help of sculpture is a rather non-standard solution for that time.

Temple of the XIV century, located in the historical part of Lviv. It is one of the oldest religious buildings in the city. The cathedral was built on the site of an Armenian church of the 12th century at the expense of the merchants Panos and Yakov. At the beginning of the 20th century, the building was restored. In 2000, the church was transferred to the Armenian Apostolic Church, although it originally belonged to the Armenian Catholic branch. The fact is that by the time of the transfer, there were almost no Catholic Armenians left in Lviv.

The first Dominican monastery was founded in Lviv in the 14th century. The cathedral was erected in the middle of the 18th century according to the project of J. de Witte with the money of Jozef Potocki. The building is one of the most striking monuments of European baroque architecture with all the solemnity and splendor inherent in this style. The monastery complex was restored several times, last works were held in the 1950s.

The monastery arose in the 15th century. Initially, all the buildings of the monastery were made of wood. During the XVI-XVII centuries they were gradually replaced by stone ones. At that time, the monastery was surrounded by powerful fortress walls, the entrance was blocked by reliable gates. St. Andrew's Church was erected in 1600-1630 according to the project of the monk B. Avelid, work on the interior was carried out in the 18th century. The building was renovated in the 1970s.

The temple is located on the Old Market Square. According to one version, it was built in the XIII century under Prince Lev Danilovich. However, some historical data and studies indicate that the building appeared no earlier than the 14th century. The architecture of the building shows features of the Neo-Romanesque style. Nowadays, on the territory of the church there is a branch of the Lviv Art Gallery - Museum ancient monuments Lvov.
