Kitesurfing in Thailand is very developed, contrary to many opinions that you can only lie on the beach and have fun. From May to October, it is either very rainy or there are intermittent rains. On average, the good wind season is from November to April, with only a slight difference in different points.
The main infrastructure for kiting and windsurfing in Thailand falls on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand. About 500 km of road from Bangkok along any path you like, given the amount of money spent and time spent on the road - and you are there.
Cha Am and Hua Hin
Place on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, opposite from the coast of Pattaya. It is located three hours drive from the capital Bangkok on the Phuket side. From mid-February to the end of April, it always blows 10-16 dome sizes, this place is ideal for training during this period. From November to January, the wind becomes less strong, but more stable, especially in the mornings. There can be quite large waves this season, despite the relative calm of the bay.
Skating along with training is carried out on the main beach of the city of Cha Am, the school and the station are located to the north of it. There are many accommodation options. Pranburi
This is a very good place for windsurfers and kiters of any skill level. The bottom is made of sand, the winds are not very strong and occur only from January to March. But there are not many people. The spot is located on the coast of the town of Pran Buri, south along the coast from Cha Am mentioned above and not far from Hua Hin. It blows here, as a rule, in the afternoon and evening. Closer to the night, the time for parties begins, of which there are a great many. Developed infrastructure will definitely not let you get bored in the absence of wind.
Ko Samui
This island in the Gulf of Thailand, which is still trying to keep the paradise of unspoiled Thailand, offers many ways to get to it. This can be done by plane from Bangkok, flights are daily, several times a day. There is also air communication between the island and the islands of Singapore and Krabi, as well as the cities of Pattaya and Bangkok.
For those who want to save money and spend 800 baht on their trip from Bangkok to the island, there is an opportunity not to use additional flights and take the train or bus.
The train goes either from Bangkok, or from Malaysia, it is necessary to leave from the main station of the capital. It is better to buy tickets of class A or B, since class C is completely “Thai”. You need to buy a ticket to Surat Thani station, then you can transfer to the ferry, which is in neighboring town DonSak, ferries depart from its port to all nearby islands.
If you choose the bus, it leaves either from Khao San Road - a famous street in Bangkok - or from the Southern Bus Station, daily at 6 pm. If you buy bus tickets from local travel agencies scattered around the station, then immediately buy a “package”, that is, a ticket for the bus and ferry to Koh Samui. It will be even cheaper and much more convenient, everything will be booked for you, you just need to show your passport. When the wind starts to blow, this lagoon is ideal for both students and lovers of an excellent wind wave rising 700 meters from the shore, above the reef. It is better to go here from January, as it is rainy on the island in November and December, despite the fact that 200 km to the north, in the Chumphon area, it is dry, sunny and cool at this time.
Chumphon
Chumphon is one of the most popular places in Thailand for both kitesurfing and windsurfing. This one is located popular resort on the coast between the above-mentioned cities of Cha Am and Hua Hin in the north and Surat Thani in the south. But if you have booked a flight from Bangkok to Surat Thani, then, of course, there is absolutely no point in returning back to Chumphon to take a ferry or a boat later. It is much more convenient to drive a short distance from the city of Surat Thani to the port in the town of Don Sak. From its ferry terminal, flights to all the nearest islands depart stably and always according to the schedule. The weather has changed a lot in recent years, and not only in Thailand, but all over the world, as it seems to me. In my opinion, the best time to travel to Thailand for skiing is June, end of August -September. There are two different types of winds on these islands - mild enough for skiing and super strong gales.
Since the winds are not strong in March - mid-May, these months are ideal for diving. November is the rainy season and usually it's just heavy rain and no wind at all.
What are the conditions here? What is the average wind?
Both islands are located in a bay and the wind blows across the continent and out of the bay. Most of the year the wind is from the west, which makes riding at sunset unforgettable.
During the windy months you will get at least 2 weeks of wind on average, around 12 - 15 knots (6 - 7/8 m/s). In the months of storms - in June it blows in the range from 12 to 40 knots (6 - 20 m/s). This is a dangerous month and you should really pay attention to weather changes. In the period from December to February, winter northern winds, in which you can ride well from +20 knots 10 m / s).
What is the most popular kite size you use here?
For my weight (75kg) I use 13.5m2 RRD Obsession. I also have 9 m2, of the same brand - for riding in storms and strong winds.
You are currently installing a new kite station on Koh Samui (my big congratulations!), can you tell us more about this place and kite station?
On the Koh Samui The easiest way to get there is by direct flights from Bangkok. We are in Bo Foot (Bo Phut). It is only 5 minutes from the airport and 5 km from bigger city Chaweng (Chaweng). Depending on the direction of the wind, we can change the training spot in the northeastern part of the island.
Is this place more suitable for beginners or advanced riders? Do you have a shallow water lagoon for beginners?
There are many on Koh Samui beautiful beaches. Many of them are tourist areas, with a large number of hotels. These zones perfect place for beginner riders. Most of our RRD kites are available in sizes from 7m to 15m. All 2011 and 2012 models. We have boards "Square two" for beginners and RRD boards for more experienced riders.
Are there any features that you need to know about this place (reef, corals, sea urchins, etc.)? Do I need to have slippers, hydrik?
All the shallow beaches on Koh Phangan and Koh Samui are dead coral reefs, which means that sharp stones, corals, sea urchins there is, sometimes you can even run into a broken bottle. I always wear slippers. Wetsuits may be needed for winter time when the water reaches 26 C degrees. If you are used to the cold, then this is the ideal water temperature for you.
