From Tbilisi for 1 day. What to see and where to go in Tbilisi

You need to allocate at least a few days to the capital of Georgia, but if you are limited in time, then information on what to see in Tbilisi in 1 day will be useful. This is what I will talk about in the article, which includes a description of one - the most fascinating - route. At the end of the post, you can also get acquainted with several other variations that will allow you to see no less interesting sights of Tbilisi.

The nuances of the route in Tbilisi for 1 day

To begin with, it is worth understanding and accepting that it is physically impossible to visit all the sights of Tbilisi in one day. Firstly, some interesting places are located at a considerable distance from others. Accordingly, they will need to set aside a separate day. For example, the local ethnographic museum is located on the road to Turtle Lake outside the outskirts of Tbilisi Vake. Secondly, even the central places of interest are at a considerable distance from each other. Two can be distinguished tourist area: Old city, across the river from which there is Rike Park and the Avlabari metro station and new areas, the center of which is Rustaveli Avenue, ending at Freedom Square (with the metro station of the same name). For a better acquaintance with the culture of the capital of Georgia, I suggest the following itinerary for one day in Tbilisi: - Rike Park and Peace Bridge - Metekhi - Narikala - Old Town.

Tsminda Sameba and Rike Park

It is worth starting a trip around Tbilisi from the main cathedral of the city called Tsminda Sameba, which is also called the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. The temple is located just above the Avlabari station (5 minutes on foot), so the entire route can be started from this road junction (however, if it is more convenient for you to get to the temple on foot or by other means of transport, then the metro stop may not be included in the route). Tsminda Sameba is an impressive religious site with its size and surrounding area. In the morning, the building is spectacularly illuminated by the sun from the east side.

From the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity we go down to. You can get lost in the intertwining streets of Tbilisi, but this will only add color to the walk, and you can get your bearings here as easy as shelling pears - just move down towards the river. Landmarks will be the same Avlabari metro station and the massive Presidential Palace, standing above the park. The very same green zone off the banks of the Kura is distinguished by modernity and interesting design solutions. You can spend some time looking for original benches, look at giant chess and a white piano, be surprised at how futuristic cultural center Tbilisi.

Bridge of Peace and Metekhi

There are two bridges across the river in the direction of the Old City, one of which, the Bridge of Peace, also features modern bold architectural features. Skeptical locals call it a “gasket”, but it seems to me that this bridge is worth seeing in Tbilisi in 1 day.

But our path does not lie through the Peace Bridge, but in the direction of another bridge and the area of \u200b\u200bthe same name with it -. It is located at the northeastern end of Rike Park, behind the European Square. This is one of the most ancient districts of the city. The legend about the founding of Tbilisi by King Vakhtang Gorgasal is associated with it. A monument to this ruler stands above the waters of the river, and an old church rises here. Metekhi was rebuilt many times, before there was even a palace, and therefore the thousand-year historical past of Tbilisi is especially felt here.

Cable car and Narikala fortress

The next stop of the walk around Tbilisi in 1 day is the lower station of the cable car in Rike Park. It is separated from Metekhi by the same European Square, but the upper station of the cable car is quite far away - on the slope of the Sololaki ridge. The trip itself on this mode of transport can be considered interesting journey because the cabins offer a beautiful view of the whole city. Well, at the top you will find another Georgian monument - the symbol of Georgia and Tbilisi. The monument stands a few tens of meters from the cable car stop, but it makes no sense to go up the mountain just for the sake of this attraction. The main object of Sololaki is still ahead.

Directly from the upper station of the cable car, you can enter the territory of the ancient. Now from it there is a well-preserved Lower Castle, in which the main entrance and a small temple are located, as well as a large number of fragments of the walls of the Upper Castle. From the monument to Mother Kartli, the road leads just to the upper part of Narikala, from where you can see the panoramas of Tbilisi ( the best views open from the highest point - towers with a cross). If you are looking for what to visit in Tbilisi in one day, then the Narikala Fortress is the undisputed leader of the rating. And after inspecting the upper territory, it is worth going down to the main entrance, from where the old streets will lead you to the historical center of Tbilisi.

Old town - sulfur baths or Botanical garden

Orbiri Street will take us straight to the Old City, spread out under the Sololaki ridge. The main attraction of this area (except architecture, of course) is the famous. There are several dozen of them here, each bath differs in its conditions and prices, but it is definitely worth taking a steam bath for at least an hour in these complexes. Firstly, it is useful, since the water is saturated with natural hydrogen sulfide directly from sources under the city.

And secondly, visiting the baths will help you better understand the culture of Tbilisi. At this point, the main route can be completed, because if you pay due attention to each sight, then by the time you descend into the Old Town, it will already be evening. But there are a few more ideas of what to see in Tbilisi in 1 day, and now I will share them.

  1. Visit instead of sulfur baths and / or Narikala fortress (it is very pleasant to be in a large green area on hot days).
  2. Visiting Tsminda Sameba at sunset instead of the morning (in order not to make a detour from the Avlabari metro station, but go straight to Rike Park).
  3. Visiting the main flea market of Tbilisi - the market on the Dry Bridge, where there is everything that can be brought from Georgia. The market is located in the northeast of Rustaveli Avenue, on the banks of the Kura River (instead of Mtatsminda Amusement Park or Rike Park).

Tbilisi one-day itinerary map

I marked all the main points of the one-day route through the Georgian capital on the map. Tracking it is very simple - attractions are marked with numbers from 1 to 10. Points 7 to 10 are not included in the main route, but if you wish, you can change it, giving preference to one or another place.

  1. Tsminda Sameba.
  2. Metekhi region.
  3. Narikala Fortress and Mother Kartli.
  4. Botanical Garden.
  5. Sulfur baths.
  6. Freedom Square.
  7. Dry bridge.
  8. National Museum.
  9. Mount Mtatsminda.

Other day itinerary options

In order not to confuse tourists who visited the city for the first time, we will consider all options using the example of the above route. And the first deviation from it will be the turn to the Peace Bridge, from which the road will lead us to Freedom Square (there is a metro station of the same name here).
This is the modern center of Tbilisi, from which Rustaveli Avenue departs. the main street city will be of interest to those who love leisurely walks, enjoying architecture and developed infrastructure. There are many old buildings on the avenue, the street itself is very green. Here you can visit:

  • Drama theater named after Griboyedov.
  • Theater named after Rustaveli.
  • Opera and Ballet Theater named after Paliashvili.
  • National Museum of Georgia.
  • National Gallery.
  • Old Parliament building.

The avenue ends at Rustaveli Square, where there is also a metro stop. This place is quite remote from the Old Town, so it makes sense to end the route here. However, there is always an option to start your walk around Tbilisi from here, and continue in the area of sulfur baths.

But families with children who are interested in what to see in Tbilisi in 1 day can be advised to go from Freedom Square not along Rustaveli Avenue, but along Chonkadze Street, where the lower station of the city

In this article, you will find the best routes to the most interesting sights of Tbilisi, and also find out what to see in Tbilisi first of all, in 1 or 2 days. In other words, everything is mentioned here that will make you fall in love with the capital of Georgia and its inhabitants and then come back here again.

Where to live in Tbilisi?

Without a doubt, one, two or even three days are not enough to get to know such a colorful and charismatic city. But, unfortunately, it also happens - our vacations are short and we want to have time to see something else besides the capital of the country, or a person just got to Tbilisi on a business trip and wants to see the city at the same time.

For a deeper immersion in the unique atmosphere of the Georgian capital, I would recommend staying not in typical monotonous hotels with their “ buffet tables” and furniture from IKEA, and rent an apartment somewhere in the Old City for a day in a real Tbilisi house with high ceilings, an authentic courtyard and wide endless stairs, and at least for a couple of days feel like a local resident.

I can safely recommend this one beautiful apartment in Avlabari area overlooking Tsminda Sameba, cozy modern apartment hotel in the very "heart" of the Old City - the Kala area, great apartment with terrace in the historical district of Abanotubani (this is where Tbilisi was once born) and wonderful apartment with a very cordial and hospitable hostess in the very center of Tbilisi, near Freedom Square.

If you are planning your independent travel in Georgia or just a weekend trip to Tbilisi, be sure to check out my collections and - they contain only the most valuable information from personal experience numerous trips to Tbilisi over several years.

What to see in Tbilisi in 1 day

If you are interested in a certain area of Tbilisi, you can click on the name and go directly to its description and coordinates.

1. Freedom Square

The main square of the capital of independent Georgia is notable for its “golden” statue of St. George (the heavenly patron of Georgia, which explains the English name of the country - Georgia), which in the early 90s was replaced by central square Tbilisi statue of Lenin.

Freedom Square coordinates: N41.69336, E44.80152.

2. Sololaki area

If you only have a few hours to get to know Tbilisi, I would recommend heading straight here - to the residential quarters of the Old City. Everything else: bridges, temples, avenues - there are plenty of places, and narrow, curved streets twined with vines and shaded by the famous Tbilisi balconies (many of which are the size of a room in a typical Moscow apartment) are only in Tbilisi and nowhere else.

Sololaki, home of the Mailyan brothers

In my opinion, this is the most suitable place to choose a hotel or apartment - if your goal is to feel the spirit and atmosphere of the real old Tbilisi.

3. Kldisubani district

If Rustaveli Avenue is the “core” of Tbilisi, the Sololaki district is its “heart”, then the rocky region of Kldisubani is its “semantic beginning”. The place where, in ancient times, a previously ordinary settlement began to turn into one of the most interesting cities in Europe.

It is in Kldisubani that the most ancient and unique temples(among which there is even a sanctuary of fire worshipers), steep streets-stairs, amazing viewpoints - and houses hang over the streets, sometimes contrary to the laws of physics.

4. Meidani Square

The historical center of the Old Town, where all its roads converge: along Kote Abkhazi street from here you can get to Freedom Square, along Tumanyan (Tumaniani) street - to Kldisubani, along Gorgasali street - to the area of Abanotubani sulfur baths. Well, the Metekhi bridge will take you to the left bank, where the Avlabari and Metekhi areas stretch.

Meidani Square coordinates: N41.68993, E44.80908.

5. Kote Abkhazi street

"Stanovoi Ridge" of Old Tbilisi, Kote Abkhazi street curves through the Kala district from Freedom Square to Meidani Square. Attractions and excellent cafes / restaurants on this street alone would be enough for a small regional center: Georgian and Armenian churches, a synagogue, one of the few surviving Tbilisi caravanserais - and in the alleys there are legendary Tbilisi courtyards, which have not yet been reached by long (and, often, crooked) hands of restorers.

6. Chardin area

District with unofficial name Chardin, formed by two streets (they could be called parallel if they did not bend in two graceful arcs between Meidani Square and Abkhazi Street) Shardeni and Bambis Rigi.

The street and the district got their names in honor of the French traveler Jean Chardin, who visited Tbilisi in the 19th century on a Catholic mission and colorfully described the city in his notes.

Chardin is a rough analogue of Moscow's Arbat with its pedestrian zone and the former Krasny Oktyabr factory with its current abundance of various drinking establishments.

In addition to bars and clubs, Chardin is known for its unusual sculptures: for example, the famous figure of "Tamada", four images of actress Sofiko Chiaureli, grinning Sergei Parajanov, falling at you from the wall, and a very big-nosed character, who has been waiting for a horse race near Sioni Cathedral for several years.

7. Sioni Cathedral

Sioni- one of the most important Georgian religious shrines. Before the Tsminda Sameba Cathedral was built on the opposite bank of the Kura, Sioni was the main Orthodox church in all of Georgia.

At present, it is in Sioni that the cross of St. Nino is kept - the first Christian cross of Georgia, made by her personally from a vine, intertwined with her own hair. During enemy raids, the relic was taken away for storage in a hard-to-reach mountain area - but when the danger had passed, they were returned back.

Sioni coordinates: N41.69133, E44.80753.

8. Avlabari and Metekhi districts

Avlabari is the Armenian past and the Georgian present, embodied in a very original mix.

An extremely picturesque and colorful area of the city - it is here that the highest church in Georgia, Tsminda Sameba, and two Armenian churches rise (moreover, one of them is half blown up, with a crack from the roof to the foundation), the palace of Queen Darejan (Sachino) rises on a rock, look at passers-by heroes of the film "Mimino" are waiting for their guests cozy park Rike and the famous Peace Bridge - and much, much more.

Monument "Mimino" in Avlabari

Metekhi area notable primarily for its famous church Metekhi- it is located on the very bank of the Kura, not far from the Rike park, and is one of the most ancient and revered churches in Tbilisi and all of Georgia.

Metekhi church and monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali

9. Cableway Tbilisi

cable car- one of the most interesting (and, importantly, inexpensive) entertainment in Tbilisi. In a few minutes of time and 0.5 lari money, the booth will take you to the foot of the statue of "Mother Georgia", towering over the city.

City view from Narikala

Cable car cabins fly over the most picturesque areas of the city - somewhere in Rome or Paris, such an attraction would take at least ten euros. And in Tbilisi it's ordinary public transport(You can pay for the fare with a metro card).

Coordinates of the bottom station of the cable car: N41.69194, E44.81065.

10. Narikala fortress and Mother Georgia statue

The ruins of an ancient fortress rise above the Old City and invariably attract the eye. They look especially impressive at night thanks to skillful illumination:

The fortress in this place is mentioned back in Byzantine times, but it became truly impregnable during the four-century domination of the Arabs: they learned how to build fortresses from the crusaders, and learned well.

Narikala fortress coordinates: N41.688, E44.80846.

Statue "Mother Georgia"(Kartlis-deda) - a monument-symbol, located just above the fortress. This is not a monument to any specific Georgian mother, but rather a material embodiment of the character of the nation: in one hand, the statue holds a cup of wine - for friends, and in the other it grips the hilt of a sword - for enemies.

Coordinates of "Mother of Georgia": N41.68807, E44.80471.

Two roads lead down from the upper station of the cable car: one winds between the old houses and carved balconies of the Kldisubani district and leads to Meydani Square, and the second (in fact, it is an inconspicuous stairway) leads exactly to the upper entrance to the Botanical Garden, located on the other side Sololaksky ridge.

11. Tbilisi Botanical Garden

An amazing place for leisurely walks on a hot summer day. However, at other times of the year botanical garden won't be bored.

Coordinates of the lower entrance to the Botanical Garden: N41.68704, E44.80908(the upper one is located near the upper station of the cable car).

12. Abanotubani (“Bath district”), gorge and waterfall

The city of Tbilisi once arose in this very place, where warm sulfur springs gush out of the ground and where the famous sulfur baths of the region are now located. Abanotubani.

The legendary pheasant and hawk in Abanotubani - in the background is the facade of the Orbeliani bath

What does a pheasant have to do with the founding of Tbilisi, how to get from the city center in 10 minutes to a real gorge, why Sunnis and Shiites pray in the same mosque, what is a sulfur bath and how to go into it correctly - you will find answers to all these questions in

Mtatsminda area

1. Church of Tsminda Sameba

On the this moment This is the main Orthodox church in Georgia. Built with the active assistance and partly with the money of the former president of the country, Bidzina Ivanishvili, towering in the middle historical buildings the bulk of the new cathedral still causes considerable controversy among the inhabitants of Tbilisi.

Tsminda Sameba coordinates: N41.6975, E44.81664.

2. Presidential Palace

The favorite "toy" of former President Saakashvili and an excellent object for ridicule over his desire to "be Europe more than Europe itself." Built in 2009, the "Avlabar residence" was originally built according to the project of a local architect, but it was already finished by an Italian, which led to the appearance of such a structure on the map of Tbilisi:

Coordinates of the Presidential Palace: N41.69561, E44.8111.

3. Rike Park

Rike Park located on the left gently sloping bank of the Kura, the name "Rike" itself can be translated as "flat bank". According to the organizers, the outlines of Rike Park repeat Georgia as it is visible on the map. True, the borders of the country have changed somewhat since the opening of Rike Park, although officially Georgia, of course, does not agree with these changes.

Smiling Ronald Reagan in Rike Park

Ancient, freedom-loving, hospitable Georgia has always attracted with the extraordinary beauty of mountain ranges, ancient temples, cordiality and invariable sense of humor of its inhabitants and special culinary traditions. 1. A taxi will cost you from 20 to 30 GEL, depending on where you are going to go - to the center (say, to Freedom Square) or to the northern regions. To call a taxi, you can use the Yandex taxi or taximaxim application. The only difference is the payment method. In the first case, this is a transfer to a card, in the second, a cash payment. The trip will take no more than 25 minutes, in the summer it can stretch up to 40-50 minutes, especially in the high season.
  2. If you need to get from the airport to another city, you can order a transfer via the Internet. Here are the most popular routes in order of increasing price: to the city center ($12), to Gudauri ($45), to Bakuriani ($54), to Batumi ($80).

Buses travel along the route from 7 am to 23:35. You won't have to wait long - they come every 15-20 minutes. In the summer, they continue to walk at night. Avlabari metro station can be reached in 40 minutes, to the railway station (final stop) - in an hour.
  4. 1 day

The Georgian capital stands on the banks of the Kura River. The city is surprisingly lively, colorful and multifaceted, with a stable aura of a place where East and West once crossed. It is worth starting your acquaintance with the city from its classical old part.

    Freedom Square and Pushkin Square

The main square of Tbilisi is located at the junction of three city districts. Once upon a time there were gardens of the local nobility, but in the 19th century they were cut down and the old ravine was covered up. The resulting area was called Erivan at that time. In one of the houses standing on it, A. S. Pushkin lived for 2 months in 1829, and now a square located nearby bears his name. After the revolution, the square changed its name several times, bore the name of Lenin and Beria, and in our time received its modern name - Freedom Square.

The square became the center of many dramatic events in the history of the country. Today, there are administrative government buildings, the central office of the national bank, hotels, shops and numerous souvenir shops. In Pushkin Park, you can relax on the benches by the fountain, book dealers often gather here, and there is a tourist information center. Behind the park, on the square is the Museum of Art. Once this building housed a theological seminary where I. Dzhugashvili studied.

    Tbilisi funicular

The funicular in Tbilisi is not only vehicle, allowing you to climb Mount Mtatsminda, but also one of the main attractions of the city. The famous "son of a Turkish subject" once "ride" on it. To ride the funicular, you need to buy a ticket, the cost of which is 2 GEL, and after midnight - 3. It has 3 stops. If you go to the second one, then you will get to the Church of St. David and the Pantheon, and the third stop - the ultimate goal of his route - is Mtatsminda Park.

    Pantheon

Here, on Mount Mtatsminda, near the Church of the Holy Father David, there is the Tbilisi Pantheon. The church was built on the site of the destruction of the rock of St. David. According to legend, in the 5th century, the ascetic David lived here in a cave, who descended from the mountain to the city only on Thursdays. A necropolis was organized near the walls of the temple, which now bears his name, in which the most prominent representatives of Georgian culture and public life are buried. It takes its history from 1829, when, on the initiative of Princess Nina Chavchavadze, her husband, Russian poet and public figure Alexander Griboyedov, was buried here. On the centenary of his death, in 1929, the Pantheon was opened here.

There is also the grave of Nina Alexandrovna Chavchavadze-Griboyedova herself, the great Vazha Pshavela, Veriko Anjaparidze, Ilya Chavchavadze, Vakhtang Chabukiani, and many public and political figures. In the Pantheon you can find a tablet with the name of Niko Pirosmani, but his grave is not here, because the burial place of the famous artist remains unknown. Near the Pantheon, at the crevice of the cave in which St. David of Gareja lived, there is a holy spring. Make a wish, soak a pebble in water and attach it to the wall of the temple. If he holds on, then your wish will certainly come true.

    Mtatsminda park and observation deck

Back in the 19th century, Tbilisi residents began to go to Mount Mtatsminda (its name translates as “Holy Mountain”) for picnics in the summer. So, gradually it became a favorite vacation spot for the townspeople. There are many restaurants and cafes here. In the 30s of the last century, the slopes of the mountain were planted with trees. Today here big park with attractions for children and adults, an aqua park, a dinosaur park and a large Ferris wheel. Climb to the observation deck to enjoy an extraordinary view of the city. From here, the whole Tbilisi is perfectly visible, especially its old part.

    Puppet Theater Rezo Gabriadze

One of the main attractions of the Shavteli pedestrian street is the Rezo Gabriadze Puppet Theater located on it. His performances are known far beyond the borders of Georgia. To get to them in the Georgian capital, tickets must be bought in advance. Rezo Gabriadze himself is practically a heritage of culture, not only Georgian, but also world. This playwright, artist and sculptor created his own special world, touching which, you will begin to look at life with completely different eyes. There are only four performances in the theater program. All dolls are made by the artist himself, as well as the plays invented by him.

The theater building, created in 1981, is impossible not to notice. It is adorned with a clock tower. Every hour a door opens in it, and an angel beats the bell with a hammer. And twice a day - at 12 noon and 7 pm - a mini-performance "The Cycle of Life" is played here. The turret is decorated with tiles, which were painted by the artist himself, and a pomegranate tree grows on its roof.

On the pediment of the theater building, the motto of the artist's life is written: "Let our tears come only from onions." Near the theater there is a cafe, the interiors of which were painted by the artist. Once it was the size of a small room and was called “Do not Cry!”, But gradually it grew and is now simply called “Gabriadze”. Scenes and phrases from famous films in which the artist took part as a screenwriter for Mimino, Kin-dza-dza and others are painted on the tables and chairs.

    Shavteli street

Another pedestrian street in the old town. It is named after the medieval Georgian poet, who lived during the time of Queen Tamara, Ioann Shavteli. Once it was the very center of the city, here stood the royal palace, and in front of it was the main Palace Square. This area was very prestigious in those ancient times. Notable townspeople and nobles built their houses near Tsarskaya Square. Both the square and the palace were completely destroyed in 1795 during the invasion of the Persian Khan Aga-Mohammed.

Now the buildings of the Georgian Patriarchy are located on this place, inside it is a functioning convent. Holy Mother of God, opposite the ancient church of St. George, which served as the main court temple since the 17th century. In addition to it, all the buildings on the street already belong to XIX century, there is practically nothing left of ancient houses, palaces and churches. Here, on Shavteli Street, there is the famous puppet theater Rezo Gabriadze, and in the park opposite the Church of St. George there is a small fountain - a gift to the city from the French capital.

    2 day

The second day is worth reviving somewhat with a breath of modernity - you can take a walk on the cable car, relax on the hot sulfur springs, thanks to which the city got its name (“Warm”), and also enjoy natural wealth cities.

Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, or Tsminda Sameba

The Cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church is visible from anywhere in the city. It stands on the hill of St. Elijah on the banks of the Kura. This is the highest church in Georgia - its height is 101 m. The history of the cathedral dates back to 1989, when a decision was made to build it, connected with the celebration of the 2000th anniversary of Christianity. But due to the difficult subsequent years, especially the events of the civil war in Georgia in 1992, the construction was postponed and the construction of the temple began only in 1995.

The first divine service took place here in 2002 around Christmas, although the temple was not yet completed. It was consecrated in 2005 after construction was completed. The complex includes 9 chapels, most of which are located underground, a bell tower, a theological academy, the residence of the Catholicos, even a hotel and a cafe. Inside the walls of the temple are painted with the most interesting frescoes, the best artists of Georgia under the guidance of Amiran Goglidze took part in the design.

Patriarch Ilia II himself painted several icons for the church. The church keeps the cross of St. Nino, which was installed on Mount Mtskheta as a sign of the baptism of Georgia. People say that the temple is literally built on bones. Once upon a time there was an old Armenian cemetery here. It began to be destroyed in the 30s at the initiative of Beria. And during the construction, the surviving remains were not reburied, and the plates and monuments disappeared.

    Metekhi Temple

Metekhi Temple (Nativity of the Mother of God) is one of the main symbols of Tbilisi. It was erected in the 12th century next to royal palace and has experienced many dramatic events over its long history. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times. It survived the Mongol and Persian invasions. In the 19th century, a Cossack regiment was placed in it, and in 1921 - the torture chambers of the NKVD. In 1937, the temple had to share the fate of most religious buildings - a decision was made to demolish it. However, many enlightened people and public figures opposed the demolition. One of them was the artist Dmitry Shevardnadze, participation in the rescue of an architectural monument cost him his life. These events formed the basis of the film "Repentance" by T. Abduladze.

This temple is of great importance for Georgian culture. Only here are examples of artistic stone carving traditional for medieval Georgian architecture of the 13th-15th centuries preserved. Attached to the northern wall of the church is a unique portico decorated with carvings depicting a vine. Not far from the temple, already in 1967, a monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali, the founder of the city, was erected.

    Europe Square and Rike Park

Close to Europe Square is completely new park Rick. It was founded just a few years ago, but has already become one of the favorite places for recreation of Tbilisi youth. It is good to come here both during the day and in the evening. In the park you can find a piano in the bushes, play chess on a giant board or sit on a bench with Ronald Reagan - the park sculpture is very diverse and not without humor, which is generally distinguished by local residents. In the evenings, the park is illuminated by dancing fountains and the Bridge of Peace is brightly lit (Tbilisi called it “gasket” because of its great resemblance to this hygiene item).

The lights on the bridge do not turn on randomly. As conceived by the architects, the lights, using Morse code, convey the names of all the chemical elements that are an integral part of the human body. Thus, the authors of the project wanted to convey the idea of the unity and equality of all mankind, that all people are essentially the same. In the evening, from the park, you can clearly see the presidential palace and the old city, located on the other side of the Kura, sparkling with lights.

    cable car

The bottom station of the cable car is located near Rike Park, next to the Peace Bridge. You will definitely notice the cabins that will fly over your head in the city center. For Tbilisi residents, this is the same public transport as the metro and bus, so you can use a regular metro card to pay for the fare. Launched in 2012, it is modern, very fast and safe view transport.

Seven cabin capsules with panoramic windows can accommodate 8 people. They move smoothly and rapidly, stopping at stops. At the topmost, final stop of the cable car, there is an observation deck. From here you can look at the city and choose your new route. Not far from the site stands the monument "Mother of Kartli" - one of the symbols of the city, and on the opposite side of it - medieval fortress Narikala.

    Statue "Mother of Kartli"

Next to the observation deck is a 20-meter statue of "Mother of Kartli", or "Mother Georgia". She is a symbol of the Georgian nation: in one hand she has a cup of wine, which she treats to everyone who came in peace, and in the other - a sword for enemies. The statue was erected in 1958 and was originally made of wood. In 1963, it was replaced with aluminum. In the 90s, the statue was also slightly reconstructed, in addition, the sculptors “put on” a scarf on the girl and made the dress a little longer.

    Narikala fortress

The remains of the old church, which began to be built in the 5th century, stands on the hill of the same name. There have never been royal residences or main churches, as in other city fortresses. She performed only a defensive function. Fortress many times tried to take by storm, completed and rebuilt. It was seriously damaged during a major earthquake in 1827. In the XII century, the temple of St. Nicholas was built in the fortress, unfortunately, nothing has survived from the old temple, except for the foundation.

In the 90s of the last century, the temple was restored on the old foundation. From the fortress itself, after the earthquake, the gates and fragments of the walls survived. On them you can see the famous decor, typical for the Georgian architecture of that time. The name of the fortress comes from the Iranian (Persian) roots "nari" ("younger") and "kala" (fortress).

    Sulfur baths

Sulfur baths are part of Tbilisi culture. These are ordinary public baths, the water in which is supplied from sulfur springs, of which there are many in the city itself and around it. Water saturated with hydrogen sulfide has healing properties. According to legend, even King Vakhtang noticed that a wounded pheasant drank water from such a source and immediately recovered. The king ordered to found a city on the site of these sources, which was called the "Warm City" - Tbilisi. Since then, the image of a pheasant has been one of the symbols of the city.

Initially, sulfur baths were taken in containers carved from stone right in the rocks. Gradually, houses for baths began to be built around. Today in Tbilisi there are several baths where you can take a steam bath and order a massage. It is best to visit them in the evening, after long walks around the city. Lots of bath complexes, which have developed historically, in the Abanotubani area, look for more modern complexes with the best service on Lake Lisi.

    Canyon with waterfall Legkhvtakhevi

The Legkhvtakhevi waterfall is imposingly located right in the center of the city behind the sulfur baths. To get to it, you have to walk along the gorge. Tiny houses with carved balconies are located on its slopes. From one sight of these dwellings hanging in colorful clusters, the heart begins to pound. And then the view opens up on the waterfall itself - a majestic and clear stream of water falls to the ground with a terrible roar. It is here that the origins of the city are located. It is worth reaching the very end of the gorge to find yourself in this realm of eternal coolness.

    3 day

The third day of your stay in the city can be devoted to the sights, dearly loved by the locals. For example, visit Turtle Lake or plunge into the motley cycle of the Dry Bridge.

    turtle lake

One of the favorite places for Tbilisi residents is Turtle Lake. There are two versions about the origin of the name. According to one, turtles were once found in the clear water of the lake, and according to the other, the reservoir from above has the shape of a turtle. You can get to it by the second cable car, which is the longest in Tbilisi. Its final stop is Turtle Lake. On the way, you can admire the views of the park, fashionable new districts of the city, and the lake from above. A recreation area is organized around the lake, it is good to relax here in the warm season. There are rides, trampolines and inflatable slides for children. You can sit in small cozy cafes and restaurants, which are quite a lot around the lake. For sports enthusiasts, there are sports grounds with exercise equipment and treadmills.

The lake is popular with lovers of mountain hiking and hiking. Here, across the low mountain range, there are two routes. You can come to the lake not by cable car, but climb up from Vake Park, located below. In summer, concerts, performances and club parties are often held on the shore of the lake.

    Flea market "Dry Bridge"

From Freedom Square, it is easy to get to the most famous Tbilisi flea market on the Dry Bridge. It was formed spontaneously in the 90s of the twentieth century, when the sale of things from home for many people was the only way to make ends meet. It is here that you can choose souvenirs for the memory of the trip for every taste. Right under open sky trade in handicrafts, antiques, local artists sell their paintings. Here you can buy old books, ceramics, goods of the Soviet era, vinyl records and cameras, hand-made (and not quite) carpets and edged weapons. It is worth coming here for the real Tbilisi flavor, to feel the atmosphere of the city, to try to find among the useless junk something that will always remind you of this amazing city.

    Shardeni street

The area of Georgia is only 69,700 km², but a relatively small area has a high concentration of attractions: ancient cities, historical places, unique landscape and miraculous masterpieces. You can see all the most interesting in a couple of weeks, but even those who are limited in time will be able to have fun and eventful. In this article I will tell you where you can go from for one day.

Georgian military road

One of bright places, which we visited in Georgia, was the Georgian Military Highway. The route passes through the main Caucasian ridge and connects cities such as Vladikavkaz and Tbilisi. For tourists, the Georgian Military Highway is attractive with numerous sights, observation platforms and, of course, amazing mountain landscapes.

Ideally, to truly enjoy the surrounding beauties, you need to come here for at least a couple of days, but one day will be enough to walk through the alpine meadows and visit several interesting places.

  • The duration of the trip is 10-14 hours;
  • You can organize a tour along the Georgian Military Highway either on your own, by taking a bus or taxi, or by buying a tour in one of the agencies of the capital;

Uplistsikhe + Gori

One of the main attractions of Georgia - cave city Uplistsikhe. In addition to the unique architecture and centuries-old history, the complex received tourist popularity due to its proximity to the capital (85 km.). In one day, you can see not only Uplistsikhe, but also the Stalin Museum in Gori, and if you plan the route correctly, you can also visit Mtskheta.

The duration of the trip is 4-6 hours. If you stop in Gori, then another + 2-3 hours.

Mtskheta + Jvari Temple

Mtskheta - ancient capital Georgia and the most holy city country. Its main attractions are temples and monasteries. Despite the fact that I am not a particularly religious person, I like Mtskheta and I highly recommend including a visit to it in the program. What for?

  • The chiton of Jesus Christ is kept in the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. The same clothes in which he was crucified;
  • A beautiful panorama of the confluence of two rivers opens from the lookout of the Jvari temple;
  • The first worship cross in Georgia was also installed here. It is believed that it was from here that Christianity spread throughout the country;

Mtskheta is located 30 km. from Tbilisi. To see the city and the temple of Jvari, you need 4-6 hours, including travel time.

Sighnaghi

A trip to Sighnaghi is a good idea for those who want to get away from the capital for a day. Cobbled road, tiled roofs, facades of pastel-colored buildings - this is how the city greets guests after a major reconstruction. Why go to Singakhi?

  • Walk on quiet fishing rods and admire the views of the Alazani Valley;
  • Stop by the Bodbe Monastery, where the relics of St. Nino are buried;
  • Rent a house in Sighnaghi or for a couple of days and inspect from here;

Can be taken one day tour from Tbilisi, which includes not only a walk around Sighnaghi, but also a visit to several cathedrals and. As a rule, such an excursion lasts 10-14 hours, depending on the program.

Report from our trip: sights and impressions.

David Gareji is a complex of ancient monasteries on the border of Georgia and Azerbaijan. The object is notable for its landscape and centuries of history. It consists of numerous temples, cells and caves. Unfortunately, we never managed to visit David Gareji, but there were our friends who were delighted with the tour. I can’t tell you more about it, but I know one thing for sure - the trip is worth it!

20€ from a person. Ring route around Tbilisi on a double-decker red bus, the ticket is valid for 24 hours, you can get off at any stop (the route is in the description at the link)

Sights of Tbilisi, day 1

Abanotubani

Sulfur baths area in Tbilisi

Coordinates: 41.688233, 44.811047

Abanotubani is a quarter in the center of Tbilisi, famous for its complex of sulfur baths. According to legend, King Vakhtang Gorgasali hunted a pheasant in this area and found hot spring. To celebrate, I decided to build a city around the source and move the capital here from. This is how Tbilisi was born.

The area of sulfur baths is usually offered to end the walk in order to take a steam bath after a busy day.

Reviews about the baths are different, decide for yourself whether you want this, for a start you can just look at the round roofs and drink pomegranate juice in the Heydar Aliyev Square.

Hot water in this place rises from the bowels of the earth from a depth of 2500 meters. They say it's good for the skin.

The baths have common rooms for 3-4 lari per hour (75-100 rubles) and private rooms with swimming pools from 30 to 150 GEL(750-3700 r) depending on the bath, mekise services (massage or scrub) - from 10 GEL (250 r).

Canyon with a waterfall in the center of Tbilisi

Houses on a cliff and a spiral staircase to the city
Waterfall in the center of Tbilisi

Coordinates: 41.68674, 44.80903

Behind the sulfur baths, the Legvtakhevi gorge begins. We get along the Tsavkisistskali river (try to pronounce it) to the end and see a waterfall right in the center of Tbilisi.

Vakhtang Gorgasali Square

Georgian khinkali in Samikitno

Coordinates: 41.689829, 44.808903

All paths lead to Vakhtang Gorgasali Square (aka Meydan or Maidan). Here we have the inscription I love Tbilisi.

〠 Machakhela(Samikitno) - A popular cafe on the square, 2 floors and a balcony with a view. I used to recommend it because it was delicious and cheap. Now it's completely messed up. The portions are small, the wait is long, the food is tasteless. Can I have a drink citric lemonade on the balcony, but it is better to eat elsewhere.

Shardeni street

Beginning of Shardeni street

Coordinates: 41.690333, 44.808641

Pedestrian short street of old Tbilisi with cafes, restaurants and hookahs. It got its name in honor of a French traveler who visited Tbilisi.

In the summer it loses its charm due to the crowds of tourists. If you don't see it, you won't really lose anything, but you can go and see it. Prices in cafes on Shardeni are high.

Metekhi Church

We go up to the church

Coordinates: 41.690102, 44.811155

We leave Shardeni, cross the river on the bridge and climb to the observation deck to the Metekhi Church (there is King Gorgasali on horseback).

From the observation deck we see the Narikala fortress and the houses of the old city - in 10 minutes we will be at the top.

Peristsvaleba Monastery and Darejan Palace

Coordinates: 41.691675, 44.812271

On the territory of the palace "Sachino" (aka Darejan) there is now a small convent.

This place is located on a rock next to the Metekhi church. From the walls there is a pleasant view of the city (Europe Square, Peace Bridge, old Tbilisi), and they also have a chic round balcony.

Europe Square and cable car

Cableway Park Rike – Narikala

Coordinates: 41.692011, 44.810719

Cable car opening hours: 11.00-23.00

We cross the road to Europe Square. We see beautiful park Rick, but we will return here later. Now our goal is the lower station of the cable car.

Narikala fortress

Coordinates: 41.688044, 44.808498

From the upper station of the cable car, following the sign, we rise to the Narikala fortress. This fortification at the end of the Sololak Range was built over 1500 years ago.

Entrance to the fortress is free, the views of Tbilisi are wonderful both during the day and at sunset, when the lights are turned on. Highest point- near the cross above the fortress, we go there.

You can get to Narikala not only by cable car, but also on foot, climbing the mountain along a cobbled street from Meydan Square.

There is also a staircase leading from the Botanical Garden to the western wall of the fortress. From this ladder beautiful view to Tabori temple and Abanotubani area.

Statue of Mother Kartli

Coordinates: 41.688214, 44.804565

From the Narikala Fortress we walk to the statue of Mother Georgia, on the way we stop at observation decks.

The Mother of Kartli monument was built on the top of the Sololak hill 60 years ago in honor of the 1500th anniversary of Tbilisi.

At first, the statue was wooden, then aluminum, in the 90s it was replaced by the one that towers over Tbilisi today.

In her right hand, Mother Kartli holds a sword to greet those who come with war, and in her left hand, a cup of wine for guests who come in peace.

Staircase in Sololaki

Coordinates: 41.688597, 44.804299

From the statue of Mother Kartli we go down the stairs to the old district of Sololaki, periodically stopping at the observation platforms. Here it seems that you can reach the roofs of Tbilisi churches with your hand.

Sololaki

Residential building in the Sololaki area

Going down the stairs, we get to Betlemi Street in the Sololaki area.

Sololaki is once an elite district in the very center of Tbilisi, the active development of which has been going on since the end of the 19th century. Now most of the buildings, which are more than 100 years old, are in a deplorable state and, if they cause admiration, then mixed with sadness.

I am glad that there are scaffolding - there is hope that Sololaki will be restored.

It is better to walk around the Sololaki area with a guide (for example, they praise) to find out the history of the houses and the people who built them.

On your own, without knowing the details, you will see just old houses. The doors of some of them hide the breathtaking beauty of the front doors.

There are several iconic cafes in Sololaki. For example, Pur Pur (cool interior), Rachinsky dukhan (basement serving delicious champignons on ketsi)

front kaleidoscope

Coordinates: 41.689937, 44.805739

There is a sign on the building Gallery 27

The front door is open with Mon to Sun from 11.00 to 20.00

old wooden private house in the Sololaki district, remarkable both in itself and in its front door with stained-glass windows. Magic place.

It is better to come in the morning in sunny weather, when the patterns cover the entire floor. After dinner, the drawings are not so bright, but still beautiful. Gift shop inside.

Frida Kahlo in Tbilisi

On Instagram this summer, pictures from Tbilisi with a portrait of Frida Kahlo often began to flicker.

People ask where to look, where to run.

An image of the Mexican artist can be found on a wall in the entrance of the Check Point Hotel in Sololaki.

Coordinates: 41.689005, 44.806361

Freedom Square

Coordinates: 41.693419, 44.801507

Freedom Square is noisy and lively, Tbilisi is completely different here.

We do not linger and go down Pushkin Street, look at the masonry left over from ancient times.

Shavteni and the Gabriadze Theater

We see a monument to a lamplighter and a sculpture of dancing Georgians ( 41.696677, 44.806714 ).

If you wish, you can go to the Baratashvili bridge. There are also sculptures on it, and also a view of the House of Justice (there is also the National Bank of Georgia).

If we do not go to the bridge, then we immediately turn onto Shavteni street, coordinates: 41.696031, 44.806571 .

Here puppet theater Rezo Gabriadze, hostels, cafes, ripe grapes hanging overhead (autumn).

Pay attention to the theater tower. Every hour, a golden-winged angel appears from the painted doors and knocks on the bell with a hammer.

Daily at 12.00 and 19.00 you can see a mini-performance in the tower - "The Cycle of Life".

The cafe on the first floor of the theater is often advised to visit. Prices for Tbilisi are high, and there are tea and donuts in other places. IMHO, you can safely skip the cafe.

Tickets for performances (in Georgian with subtitles) at the puppet theater cost from 10 to 30 GEL($4-12) you can watch the repertoire and order in advance on the theater website

Peace Bridge

Bridge of Peace in Tbilisi

Coordinates: 41.693065, 44.808319

We reach pedestrian bridge Mira, follow it to Rike Park.

The Bridge of Peace was designed by an Italian architect and was built during Saakashvili's time, but this bright glass structure still annoys some citizens.

The new authorities even intended to demolish the Peace Bridge, but they never implemented their idea (and it’s good!)

Rike Park

Rike Park, President's Palace and two chimneys

Coordinates: 41.694100, 44.809518

It's nice in Rike Park all year round. There are playgrounds, benches, walking paths. The area is completely pedestrian.

If you want to see flowering bushes in early spring or late autumn, when Tbilisi looks bare, you can go here - there is always some kind of greenery and flowers in the park.

There is also a monument to Ronald Reagan. The 40th President of the United States sits on a bench and looks at the Presidential Palace. You can sit next to.

Two pipes in Tbilisi

Looks like pretty pipes, huh?

Directly below the Presidential Palace, you can see the "chicken thighs" - a futuristic cultural complex that was built a long time ago, but never opened to visitors.

Just today, one intolerant woman wrote a comment about pipes on my blog: “This is some kind of ugliness built by Saakashvili, which has not yet become a theater or something like that.”

In general, not everyone likes the building, people have a different sense of perception of beauty. My opinion does not coincide with the opinion of the author of the comment.

Palace of the President

The presidential palace was also built under Saakashvili. Onlookers are not allowed into the territory, but you can look at the building while walking in Rike Park.

Lookout over Riquet

View from the lookout above Rike Park

Coordinates: 41.693126, 44.811551

We walk along Rike Park, climb the stairs to the observation deck.

Near the observation deck there is Cafe Flowers (pink house with white stairs). Here you can order wine with cheese and enjoy the view of Rike Park and Mount Mtatsminda. A glass of wine - from 7 lari ($ 3), a bottle - from 23 lari ($ 10).

Monument to Mimino

Monument to Mimino by Tsereteli near the Avlabari metro station

Coordinates: 41.69187, 44.81564

At the Avlabari metro station there is a monument to the heroes of Mimino. The author is Zurab Tsereteli. On the way to the Sameba temple, we taxi to the monument to our favorite heroes (for someone not very beloved).

Cathedral of Tsminda Sameba

Coordinates: 41.697516, 44.816543

Church of the Holy Trinity - main Cathedral Tbilisi, visible from anywhere.

The history of the construction of the cathedral on the site of the former Armenian cemetery is quite scandalous (the Armenian diaspora was against it, you can understand them).

The cathedral is interesting both for its external appearance and for its interior decoration. Firstly, the building is gigantic, and secondly, you can find real gems on the icons.

There is a cafe on site Lagidze water- here delicious creamy lemonade and Adjarian khachapuri are almost the same as in Adjara (almost, but not the same - in Batumi they make it tastier, but the lemonade is really delicious).

Leselidze

The itinerary of the first day does not include the tourist street Kote Abkhazi (aka Leselidze). This is the longest street that runs through the entire old Tbilisi from Freedom Square to Maidan.

In any case, you will get to Leselidze, even if you do not plan to do this, because. all the roads of the old city one way or another lead here.

Tbilisi itinerary for 2 days

We learned what to see in Tbilisi in one day, and now more about the second day. Today we will look into "Tbilisi Europe" and go for a walk along the avenues along the route:

Tbilisi sights on the map:

David Agmashenebeli Avenue

Aghmashenebeli Avenue

On the second day, you can come to the metro station Marjanishvili and walk along David Agmashenebeli Avenue to the Dry Bridge.

Near Marjanishvili you can eat the most delicious ice cream in the city in a cafe Luca Polare per 5 lari(2$ / 130 r)

Near the Marjanishvili metro station there is a fashionable place today - Fabrika Tbilisi. Something like a Moscow Flacon. This is a large hostel in a former garment factory. You can live (there are shared rooms and private rooms), or you can just spend the evening swinging in a hammock with a cup of coffee.

Now back to the street. Agmashenebeli Avenue has recently been improved, part of it is pedestrian. There are street musicians, dozens of cafes, shops, restored old houses. In the summer there are festivals and festivities. An analogue of the Moscow Arbat and a "piece of Europe" in the center of Tbilisi.

Many call this area Turkish because Turkish restaurants and hookahs predominate here. Prices are not low, the exchange rate is unfavorable (suddenly decide to change), but walk along pedestrian street definitely worth it.

It is especially pleasant here in the evening, when the lights are turned on, and the cafes are filled with vacationers. During the day is also good.

There are several decent inexpensive hotels and hostels in the Marjanishvili metro area, I recommend reading about in order to understand in which area of the city it is more convenient to rent a house.

dry bridge

Coordinates: 41.701123, 44.802914

Flea market in Tbilisi. The range of goods on offer in recent years is rather strange. They mostly sell junk. You can buy someone's worn shoes or disposable slippers with the logo of the Sheraton Hotel.

Sometimes there is a chance to find something interesting: souvenirs, handmade toys, old coins, dishes. It’s not worth going to the Dry Bridge on purpose, but if you pass by, you can take a look.

Rustaveli Avenue

Figures from below along the houses are placed

Through the square on April 9, we exit to Shota Rustaveli Avenue. This is the main avenue of Tbilisi. Here and there near the houses there are bronze figures, do not miss it.

You can walk all the way to the Rustaveli metro station, look at the monumental buildings of the Soviet era and at the big bike standing at the beginning of the avenue.

There are several theaters and museums on Rustaveli, but I am not an expert on them, so I will not mislead you by recommending any particular one. For me, Tbilisi is still not museums, but city streets, people, music and food.

Mount Mtatsminda

Funicular to Mount Mtatsminda

Coordinates: 41.695393, 44.791808

In Tbilisi there is a funicular to Mount Mtatsminda. To travel, you need to buy a non-refundable card for 2 lari(50 r) and pay 2.5 lari for climbing into one side(at night 3.5 GEL).

To visit Mtatsminda or not is a personal matter for everyone. I love this place and every time I am in Tbilisi, my feet bring me here. Looking at your favorite city from the mountain is especially nice on a hot day or at sunset.

The disadvantage of the funicular is that the trailer does not go until a sufficient number of people have gathered in it.

There is an amusement park on the mountain: a Ferris wheel, a TV tower, attractions for children, viewing rooms overlooking the city. When it’s hellishly hot in Tbilisi in the summer, it’s pretty cool and comfortable on Mtatsminda.

Here is the temple and the graves of Alexander Griboyedov, Stalin's mother. A total of 48 graves of poets, dancers, writers, artists, scientists.

Pantheon on Mount Mtatsminda

Where to go?

If you have a strong desire, in the afternoon you can go to Vake Park, ride a cable car and take a walk near the Turtle Lake. If not, then we leave this entertainment for the next day or next year?!

Tbilisi itinerary for 3 days

What else to see in Tbilisi, when it seems that you have seen everything?

In the first two days we saw a lot, it's time to get out of the center. Today we have on the agenda the natural sights of Tbilisi and the purchase of souvenirs, if you suddenly need it.

Route 1: Vake Park and Turtle Lake

Vake Park

Route 2: Lisi Lake and UFO

Service Building 112 in Tbilisi

We go for a walk and relax on Lisi Lake. In summer there are a lot of people here, there is a well-equipped pebble beach. Sunbed - 4 lari, bike rental 10 lari(there is a cycle path around the lake).

On the way, do not forget to stop by to look at the “Flying Saucer” of service 112

The 112 Emergency Response Center in Tbilisi is like 911 in the US. United service: police, fire, ambulance.

People call on urgent matters, including to report how they saw a flying saucer in the area.

Plate coordinates: 41.737818, 44.755711

Located on Mukhran Machavariani street, 1.5 km from Lisi Lake.

Route 3: Tbilisi Sea

Monument of the history of Georgia on the Tbilisi Sea
Tbilisi sea club

A popular vacation spot for locals. Of course, this is not a sea, but a reservoir, but in summer the Tbilisi Sea is full of people, as it is the largest body of water in the city.

On the Tbilisi Sea aquapark, google Gino Paradise (30 lari on weekdays 40 lari on the weekend).

You can go to see the memorial "History of Georgia" by Tsereteli (a huge monument), take a walk along the sea or relax there.

Option 4: Botanical Garden and Tabori Temple

Tbilisi Botanical Garden

If we are in love with the center of Tbilisi and do not want to leave it for anything, then we continue to explore not the most popular sights.

We buy khachapuri with lemonade and go on a picnic, so that later we can go down to the Sololaki area again and visit another couple of front doors.

Or, after the garden, we put on comfortable shoes and go up to to see from above how small, cozy and charming Tbilisi really is.

Route 5

Churchkhela with hazelnuts - a great souvenir

Even on this day, you can go for churchkhela, cheese, souvenirs.

In the same place, nearby, go for products from cloisonné enamel minakari to the Gold Exchange (Sadguris moedani metro station, Vokzalnaya Square, the lower floor of the Tbilisi railway station).

Tasty khinkali and comfortable shoes!
