History of ski resorts in Sochi

Many are interested in when and how skiing appeared in Sochi. This sport came to us from the West, in the "dashing" 90s. This sport was and remains elite. In 1992, the Alpika-Service organization built the first ski lift. The idea found a response in the hearts of many extreme sportsmen. Skiers began to flock to Krasnaya Polyana. At the very beginning of its foundation, this resort was far from the Swiss or Austrian resorts. But already in 2007, the situation changed radically.

If the decision to hold the Winter Olympics 2014 in Sochi had not been made, then this place would have remained like a ski resort. Then, an incredibly many different opportunities opened up before the “Krasnodar pearl”. The tracks have been improved, new lifts have been built. Sports infrastructure has moved to a different level. There were not only hotels, but also luxurious entertainment complexes. Interestingly, even after the end of the 2014 Winter Olympics, the resort is still developing, and this development is proceeding at a fairly active pace.

Description of resorts

If we are talking about the Krasnaya Polyana ski resort, then it should be noted that there are two villages and four complexes here. Interestingly, the village, after which the resort was named, is located farthest. Esto-Sadok is closer. Behind it, the slopes of the mountains are immediately visible, on which such famous sports complexes as Gazprom, Rosa Khutora, Gornaya Karusel, Alpika-Service are located. All entertainment stretches for 11 kilometers.

Dissatisfied guests of the resort often complain that for everyone the complex could do single subscription. But this has its own plus. So sports complexes can compete for their tourists, offering them more opportunities for successful skiing and entertainment options. So, as noted earlier, a ski resort includes 2 sports complex, each of which has its own characteristics. Ski resorts:

  • Alpika-Service is one of the oldest ski resorts presented in Krasnodar Territory. When the Olympic Games were held here, the emphasis was on freestyle and bobsleigh competitions. It is important to note that the stages of the Russian Cup in winter sports are held in this place every year. The total length of 15 slopes for skiing is 25 kilometers. Experts note that it is here that almost the largest drop in the world, which is equal to 1698 meters. A double-seat cable car pleases with special convenience. There are five lifts. In addition to skiing, helicopter flights, snowmobile rides, horseback riding, and mineral springs are offered here. Mountain peaks know how to surprise guests. In addition, there are many cafes, restaurants, eateries.
  • Rosa Khutor is the largest ski resort in Russia within the framework of the Olympic scale. Many winter sports enthusiasts note that it is Rosa Khutor that is in the greatest demand. It has all the necessary modern equipment, conditions for freeride, there are different tracks for trained athletes and for amateurs. As additional entertainment represented ice rink, bars, restaurants, night club, souvenir shops, fashion stores, spas, hairdressers, etc.
  • Gazprom is a large and, at the same time, the youngest family-type mining and tourist complex. Its second name is Laura (this is the name of the local river). This complex is more suitable for beginners, so there are many "green" slopes, which are gentle. There are 16 tracks in total, with a total length of 15 km. Additional entertainment environments are represented by a public and cultural center called "Galaktika", where you can visit a bowling center, a water park, a cinema, an ice arena, bars, restaurants. It is worth noting that due to its diverse, highly developed infrastructure, Gazprom has become incredibly popular among tourists.
  • Mountain Karusel is the first spacious complex, which is chosen by both professionals and beginners in winter sports. If you have an average level of training, then Mountain Carousel is unlikely to be of interest to you. Freeride enthusiasts will certainly enjoy a special area for them. All nine tracks correspond to the international level. Their length is 12 meters. There are 28 lifts here. Interestingly, in Gornaya Karusel, snow lies until the first summer days. This is the main attraction. Guests of the resort can choose different excursions around the Olympic Park, Russian Hills (complex of ski jumps). Mass festivities, fairs, show programs are often held here.

Many athletes try to visit all the sports bases, and only then they choose the only one that they liked more than the others.

Skiing season in the ski resorts of Sochi

Before going to Krasnaya Polyana, you should find out that the local climate is quite mild, this is due to high temperatures and proximity to the sea. Therefore, it is important to understand that ski season it's not that long here. It lasts from December to April. The average daily temperature varies from 0 to 5 degrees. The resort is covered with wet heavy snow. Of course, this moment complicates the descent off-piste. Freeride proponents often talk about it. In some places, the height of the snow cover reaches eight meters, but on average it is about two to four meters.

Accommodation

It is not difficult to find suitable housing in two villages, in existing complexes. Tourists can choose the most different hotels, hotels, private cottages. If you decide to stay in Krasnaya Polyana, where all the entertainment infrastructure is concentrated, then be prepared for the fact that you will have to get to the mountain slopes. The journey will take no more than 20 minutes. The second village of Esto-Sadok is located closer to the slopes, they can be reached on foot. There are also new hotels here (their construction was timed to coincide with the Olympics), but the infrastructure is poorer.

Of particular interest is a separate city "Gorki Gorod". It is located in the area of the complex "Mountain Carousel". Here you will find restaurants, shops, cafes, and cinemas. There is even a water park. There are also good living conditions directly in the Gazprom and Rosa Khutor complexes.

To do this, it is not necessary to obtain a visa and fly abroad: there is good skating in Russia. We have selected 11 excellent resorts that are no worse than the Alps in quality and more pleasant in price.

Caucasus

Arkhyz

Winner in the nomination "The Best Young Ski Resort in Russia" of the "Leaders of the Sports Industry" award in 2016. Skiers and snowboarders love Arkhyz: in more than three years, more than 500 thousand people have visited it, and the glory of the “Russian Alps” has been entrenched in the resort.

And this love is understandable: here you will find stunning landscapes, an excellent climate for skiing and a snowy sunny winter. "Arkhyz" is located at an altitude of 1400 to 3300 meters above sea level, the most high points- mountains Pshish and Sofia. On the territory you will find a wonderful untouched nature, beautiful glaciers and mountain lakes.

There are 8 slopes in the resort so far, difficulty levels from green to black. It is worth noting that the resort is constantly developing and growing, so if you are not ready to go to the Russian Alps this year, still add Arkhyz to your plans for the future.

The downside of Arkhyz is that there are still few hotels in the resort, and rooms are sold out very quickly. If the prices for the remaining rooms scare you, you can always rent a room from local residents or stay to live in the village of Arkhyz (minibuses run from it to the resort).

Dombay is one of the most popular ski centers in the Caucasus. The resort is in a very beautiful place: in the reserve near the confluence of several rivers. The beauty here is still wild, the development of the resort has been taken up quite recently, but at a good pace: in recent years, comfortable hotels have appeared on Dombay, a new line of lifts has opened, the resort owners have purchased modern equipment and hired a team of good instructors. So a few more years - and no Alps will be needed. In addition, the prices for skiing here are pleasing.

Dombay will appeal to both beginners and pros. The main slope is Moussa-Achitara, you can go down from it on a dozen different tracks with a total length of 20 km. The ski area is located at an altitude of 1630 to 3012 meters. A lot of gentle slopes for those who are not too sure of themselves yet, side by side with steep red runs. Cheget is a place for extreme sportsmen and professionals. There are 15 official slopes here, but again it's more like one slope. The long and steep track is considered one of the most difficult in the world, the descents run through Pine forest so it's better for beginners not to meddle here. But opportunities for freeride and backcountry - the sea. On the northern slope there are Cheget hillocks - natural formations, skiing on which helps to develop balance and improve control over skis. On Sakhalin is one of the most dynamically developing ski resorts in Russia - "Mountain Air". It is located right in the capital of the island, in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

By 2020, they promise a paradise for skiers and snowboarders: three new hills will be developed, as many as nine cable cars will be built, and the length of the tracks will increase to 85 kilometers. The longest track is 4.4 kilometers. The height difference is also impressive - 495 meters.

And we also have

There is very little time left before the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.
In the meantime, the mountain resort has already begun to recoup the costs.
We invite you to take a look at the photographs taken by the boger in Sochi.

Most of all I was surprised in the mountains of Sochi in Krasnaya Polyana by the abundance of tourists. Full house on all lifts. Which is not surprising, because bloggers do not know that ski resorts began to develop in Krasnaya Polyana long before Sochi was declared the capital of the Olympic Games.

On July 4, 2007 (it was already July 5 in Russia), the regular, 119th session of the IOC took place in Guatemala, at which the host of the 2014 Olympics, the city of Sochi, was chosen. And by the way, the private investor Potanin has been building the Rosa Khutor ski resort since 2003!

And at the beginning of 2007, near Krasnaya Polyana, the first stage of another ski complex of OAO Gazprom, Laura, was opened (the first stage includes 6 cable cars and 18 tracks).

The photo is not the most visited complex of Krasnaya Polyana - "Mountain Carousel". The complex was opened to visitors in 2008 and is popular with skiers and snowboarders, as well as tourists. And the turnover of the "Mountain Carousel" alone is already 157.6 million rubles a year! And when the whole world and all Russians know about this resort, incomes will only increase. This complex was built purely for tourists, no Olympic Games will be held here. During the 2014 Olympics, Gorki Gorod will become only a mountain media village and an auxiliary media center.

The project for the development of the complex provides for the construction of ski slopes with a total length of about 30 kilometers with 12 lines of gondola, chairlift and tow lifts. General throughput ski resort should be up to 12 thousand people at a time

And if we take the Rosa Khutor resort, then in the winter season 2012/2013 the ski area of the complex offers 72 (!) Km of slopes of varying difficulty for skiing - from green to black. The current artificial snow system is the largest in Europe and covers more than 100 hectares of the resort's ski area.

The total investment in Rosa Khutor is 69 billion rubles, of which 21 billion is a credit line opened by Vnesheconombank. The rest is Potanin's money.

Rosa Khutor Resort - largest facility Olympic Games 2014. 30 sets of Olympic medals in fifteen sports disciplines will be played on the Rosa Khutor tracks. There are no similar tracks in Russia according to all IOC standards. In February 2012, for the first time in Russia and throughout the post-Soviet space, the Alpine Skiing World Cup competitions took place at the Rosa Khutor ski resort. But if they listened to the whining of individual bloggers, skiing in Russia did not exist further.

On the horizon is not the sky, but the Black Sea. Altitude 2050 meters above sea level. The beauty!

Do you really think that private investors build hotels for the sake of two weeks? If they planned to pay off during the Olympic Games, the rooms would cost from 1 million rubles per day. Although there are still naive people on the Internet who think that everything and everything is built only with public money.

What is seen from above

In Sochi, I met a journalist from the Russian federal channel who covers the Olympic Games, for him Sochi will be the seventh Games! He said that the completion of the little things goes on at all games until they start. This is a common practice, and this is not our mentality, as some write.
