Porto is second largest center Portugal and the northern capital of the country. Porto is not at all like Lisbon: the only similarity can be seen in the fact that both of these cities are located on the coast. Porto has a special atmosphere, unique historical architecture, football spirit and breathtaking views.

There are so many attractions in the city that it is simply impossible to visit them all in a few days. They are literally located at every turn. To simplify your task, we have compiled a selection of the most interesting sights of Porto with photos and descriptions.

So, what to do and see in Porto to get the most vivid experience?

1. Walk around the Ribeira quarter

The best place to start sightseeing in Porto is in the atmospheric Ribeira quarter. Many tourists fall in love with this distinctive area, and this is understandable: every house is interesting in it. It is here that you can feel the spirit of real Portugal, walking along the promenade or along the narrow streets and enjoying the authentic beauty of cozy houses with bright tiles on the roofs.

In the Ribeira quarter, there are a huge number of small cafes overlooking the promenade, and the prices in them do not bite. Be sure to visit some institution, and best of all, try the signature Portuguese francesinha sandwich, which can be baked in an open oven right in front of your eyes.

In the evening, the Ribeira quarter turns into the most romantic place in the city, so if you are traveling to Porto with your loved one, then go for dinner or an evening walk right here.

From the Ribeira promenade, you can go to river cruise along the Dora or walk to the Don Luis bridge, which offers a beautiful view of the quarter.

2. Admire the view from the Don Luis Bridge

Don Luis Bridge, designed by a student of Eiffel himself, is one of the main attractions of the city of Porto. We can say that this bridge is for Porto - it's the same as the Eiffel Tower for Paris. Its unusual silhouette is often depicted on the labels of Portuguese port wine. In the evening, when the lights are on, the bridge takes on a special charm. To visit Porto and not take a picture in it is simply unforgivable.

Tourists unanimously say that the best views of the city of Porto, the Douro River and the Ribeira quarter with its red-orange roofs open from this building. Photos against the backdrop of such a magnificent panorama are obtained as postcards. But the attraction is also interesting in itself - with its unusual two-tier design: cars drive along the lower tier, and metro trains drive along the upper tier. There are sidewalks for pedestrians at both levels. Local daredevils jump into the water from the lower tier, collecting one euro from tourists for their exploits.

The Dona Luis Bridge connects the city center with Villo Nova de Gaia, where port wine tastings are held at a historic winery. Therefore, the final point of the walk can be planned here. Be sure to walk across the bridge on foot, look at the panorama that opens up - it will give you special impressions.

From the top level, you can take the funicular, which will take you down to the Porto waterfront. Those who buy a ticket for the funicular are sometimes given flyers for tasting wines produced in Portugal. The trip is worth 2.5 € one way.

7. See the Carma and Carmelite churches separated by the narrowest building in the world

One of the most beautiful churches in Portugal, the splendid Rococo Carmo Church is located on Teixeira Square, in the historic center of Porto. Right next to it rises the temple of the Carmelites. The churches are built so close that it seems as if it is one big temple. But in fact, they are separated by a house with a width of only 1 meter, which is considered the narrowest building in the world.

Most of all, the Carmo Church, built in the 18th century, delights tourists with the traditional tiles of Portugal - azulejo tiles, according to appearance reminiscent of Gzhel. The walls of the church are decorated with the largest mosaic paintings depicting Carmelites, which are impossible not to admire. In addition, the temple is decorated with statues of evangelists and sculptures of prophets. No less rich and its interior decoration. That is why the church is considered one of the most significant sights of Porto and the surrounding area.

It is worth noting that the magnificent beauty of the Karmu Church is emphasized by a chic fountain with sculptures of lions, which is located on the square in front of the temples.

The City Hall is considered one of the most photogenic buildings in Porto. It harmoniously fits into the general appearance of the square and emphasizes its slightly pompous beauty. Take a closer look at this monumental building and you will see a huge amount of decoration: sculptures, columns and arches. Pay attention to the fact that the windows of the town hall are made in a variety of shapes: rectangular, round, oval.

To take the best photos, come to the town hall in the early morning, when the square is not yet filled with tourists.

Attraction location: Praça General Humberto Delgado, Porto 4000-172.

11. Enjoy the silence and spaciousness of the Porto city park

If you have already seen enough of the architectural sights and are looking for what to see in Porto among natural beauties, visit the city park Parque da Cidade do Porto. A walk through this spacious park can be combined with beach holiday on the coast Atlantic Ocean, since on one side the park goes directly to the embankment.

In this place, you can relax in peace and quiet from the noisy city and enjoy the picturesque paths and lawns, breathing in the fresh breeze. Various birds (ducks, geese, etc.) swim in the ponds of the park and are not afraid of people. No wonder visitors called this park the green oasis of Porto.

The park is located quite far from the center, so it is better to get to it by metro or bus number 500. Allow about half a day for your visit.

Where is: Avenida da Boavista, Porto 4100-121.

12. Understand the city subway system

If you want to change your idea of the subway, go down to the Porto subway. However, the word subway is not quite suitable here, because the metro trains in Porto for the most part travel on the surface. With this transport you can comfortably get to the airport, train station, beach and many attractions.

But immediately pay attention to the fact that paying for tickets in Porto is quite complicated. First you need buy a card for 60 cents and add some trips to it ( cost of one trip will be 1.4 or 1.5 €). The entire metro system is divided into zones: as soon as you switch to another branch, you need to apply the ticket again.

A feature of the metro in Porto is that trains of different lines can run along the same tracks. Therefore, check the direction indicated on the train itself, so as not to travel all over the city in search of your station.

This is the program we offer to those who want to see the sights of Porto in 3 days. But of course, you can make a completely different route, focusing on your interests, in northern capital Portugal has interesting places for every taste.

All the sights of Porto described in the article are marked on the map in Russian.

The video of Kasho Gasanov from Porto is positive and informative.

Porto is not famous for world-famous masterpieces of architecture or outstanding museums, but it is still a must to go to Porto. For the atmosphere. Porto is like an old friend who will give you shelter, pour a glass of wine and drive away sadness and longing. It turned out pathetic, but, honestly, the way it is. Perhaps this Porto is a bit like, but, fortunately, there are fewer people on the streets here.

How to get to Porto

If you are traveling from Ukraine, you will have to fly with a transfer - for example, through Munich, London or Amsterdam.

Low-cost carriers are also an option. Wizzair flies to Porto from Budapest and Warsaw. Ryanair - from Eindhoven, Berlin, Copenhagen and many other European cities.

Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport is located approximately 11 kilometers from the center of Porto. The easiest way to get to the city is by subway. The airport is located on the purple line (E). Tickets can be bought at the stop directly at the airport. The cost depends on the specific route, but aim at around €2 plus €0.6 for a card that can be topped up and used on subsequent trips.

There are also buses - regular scheduled, private carriers, and even a special (and more expensive) shuttle that leaves every half an hour. But the subway is more convenient.

A taxi to the city will cost you 20-30 euros. Uber in Portugal works, but not always well. Our daytime trips to the center always went smoothly, but early in the morning to the airport, a malicious algorithm somehow tried to fit a car for us 20 minutes away from us with a double extra charge. So be vigilant - sometimes it's easier to negotiate with the nearest taxi driver on the street or call a car by phone.

If you are heading to Porto from Lisbon, the train takes 2.5-4 hours, you can check the schedule on the carrier's website.

How Porto is organized and how to get around the city

Porto is a fairly compact city. Almost all tourist attractions are concentrated in the historical center called Ribeira.

Opposite, on the other side of the Duoro River, is Vila Nova de Gaia. Formally - another city. In fact, within walking distance from the heart of Porto. It was here that all the producers of port wine settled, dividing the city like mafia bosses.

To the west of Ribeira, on the ocean, is Matosinhos. Here are beaches, surf schools and fish restaurants.

The main way tourists travel around Porto is on foot. Be prepared for the fact that you will have to climb the hills, then go down. Comfortable shoes are a must.

The metro in Porto is inexpensive and convenient. If you need to get to the same Matosinhos not in 2 hours, but in 30 minutes, we recommend it. The subway website has a convenient route planning constructor. We also recommend.

We have already talked about the fact that there is an Uber in Porto. The cost of a trip around the city is within 10 euros.

Contacts of other taxi services (just in case):

Of the special attractions for tourists are a historical tram and a river taxi.

The tram is cool, has been running in Porto since 1872. The most popular route - number 1, goes along the embankment to the ocean. It costs 3 euros.

A river taxi transports those who are too lazy to go to the bridge or just want to take a boat ride to the other side of the Duoro. The cost is the same 3 euros.

What to see and do in Porto

Ribeira

You can walk around the historic center of Porto in a day, carefully looking at the beautiful houses and churches, lined with the famous azulejo tiles, stopping for coffee and ice cream. If you are in a very, very hurry, you can run past the main attractions in half a day.

Anyway, don't miss the following places:

Good taverns with national cuisine where you can spend the evening: Taberna dos Mercadores , O Rapido , Casa Nanda , Restaurante Maria Rita , Sardines - the pride of Porto - the perfect place for a weekend brunch. A cafe where it's hard to resist not ordering the entire menu. We highly recommend.

Rota do Cha is a great terrace where you can hang out for half a day with a kettle of tea.

But for pasteis de nata (the best cake in the world), it is better to go to Lisbon. In Porto, they are trying, but, in our opinion, they have not yet mastered the art of making this dessert as well.

Drink in the evening

The main party area in Porto is Rua da Galeria de Paris. Every door on this street is some kind of bar or club. Another cluster is the neighborhood of Rua das Oliveiras.

Check out the following establishments:

Aduela is a simple bar where it's good to drink wine on the street with old rock.

Maus Habitos is an art space where alternative bands play in the evenings and cool DJs play at night.

Livraria da Baixa is a rare example of a bar in Porto where they really know how to make cocktails.

Candelabro is a small bar for locals with a great atmosphere.

Casa do Livro is a former bookstore with funk on the playlist.

Café Piolho is a budget student bar. Cheap and cheerful, but fun.

Breyner85 and Rua - jam sessions and gigs.

Gare is techno.

Where to live in Porto

Porto is one of those cities where the AirBnB offer is better than hotels.

Because Porto is small town with good transport infrastructure, the location, in our opinion, is not critical. If you want to surf every day, stay closer to the beach. Walk around the center and move in the evenings from bar to bar - closer to Ribeira.

The only thing is to carefully study the reviews of other tourists regarding the noise level when choosing accommodation, so as not to accidentally settle above a hostel or a violent bar.

More things to do in Porto

First of all, it is good to walk in Porto, admire the city, slowly drink port wine or Portuguese wine somewhere by the ocean. But if you're tired, there are other options.

Surfing

For surfing, head to the beaches of Matosinhos. The road from the city center (metro and a little on foot) will take no more than an hour. An excellent school, verified by editorial friends and their friends–

I continue to prepare for the next trip, in which I plan to visit Portugal for the first time. There will not be much time for the trip, so I will limit myself to the tourist minimum - Porto and Lisbon and, possibly, their environs. In this post I will be gathering information about what to see in Porto.

I would like to highlight any unusual places in Porto and try to give them some time too.

Porto - second largest city in Portugal. What to see in Porto? Here is highest in Portugal The 76-meter Clerigos tower, ancient churches, many sites with beautiful views and one of the most beautiful bookstores. A satellite city Vila Nova de Gaia will offer delicious port wine for every taste.

Probably everyone at least once saw a photo from Porto with many colored houses. They are literally stuck on each other, and narrow cobbled streets so they invite you to take a walk. This area of Ribeira is one of the favorite attractions of tourists visiting Porto.

During daylight hours, the local population of Ribeira is quite friendly to tourists, but, they say, in the evening it is better not to look there. It turns out that approximately a third of the houses in the area are abandoned, and after dark it doesn't get very crowded. In general, Porto is quite a calm and peaceful city.

You can get to the Ribeira area by metro, the nearest stations are Jardim do Morro and Sao Bento.

Rua Santa Catarina

Santa Catarina Street is full of famous brands and Portuguese brands, cafes and restaurants, street performers and other attributes. tourist street. A sort of Moscow Arbat in Porto.

Among other things, Santa Catarina Street is located beautiful church and famous Cafe Majestic.

Cafe Majestic(majestic)

Cafe "Majestic" is a famous and iconic place in the city. The cafe is famous unusual old interior and magical atmosphere, which it has kept since its opening in 1921.

Prices here not cheap, during the tourist season you may encounter queue at the entrance. Food is not praised, coffee is scolded(with a cup of coffee about 4 euros). Go just for the atmosphere.

Lello Bookstore

The Livraria Lello & Irmao bookstore is located in the center of Porto. open in 1869 year and since then has repeatedly been recognized as one of the the most beautiful shops in the world various guidebooks, newspapers and other publications.

The store is famous wooden stairs, which allegedly served as a prototype magic stairs in the Hogwarts library described by J. Rowling in Harry Potter. Apparently, based on this assumption, the store owners set an entrance fee!

Getting inside will cost 4 euros, but if you buy something, then this money will go in in payment for the purchase. Judging by the reviews, buying something more worthwhile is not an easy task, since the books are here mostly in portuguese.

In principle, the highlight of the store, the famous staircase that leads to the second floor, can be seen from the street. A queue at the entrance and the crowd inside I personally do not have a burning desire to pay for the entrance.

Ticket price: €4 (included in the purchase).

Opening hours:

  • on weekdays from 10:00 to 19:30;
  • on Saturday - from 10:00 to 19:00;
  • on Sunday - from 11:00 to 19:00.
Walk on the old tram

This, of course, is not the famous Lisbon tram number 28, but it is also a very colorful transport.

One of the entertainments in Porto is to look at the Atlantic Ocean from the window tram number 1, 1930. Route starts against Churches of Saint Francis and ends at the coast Atlantic Ocean (the terminus of the tram on Rua Passeio Alegre).

When you reach the end, you can look at ancient lighthouse of the 16th century - Sao Miguel o Anjou(Torre, farol, capela ou Ermida de São Miguel-O-Anjo). After that, you need to take a walk towards the coast, and minutes after 10-15 another beautiful one will seem lighthouse - Farol da Senhora da Luz. Opposite it will be located castle of sao joan baptista(Castelo de São João Batista).

Tram opening hours: from 08:00 to 20:55. Detailed timetables are available at the stops.

Fare:

  • single trip ticket €3 ;
  • 2-day ticket €10 (for children from 4 to 12 years - €5).

Tram number 1 leaves from stops in front of the church of St. Francis(Igreja de São Francisco) on the street Rua do Infante D. Henrique.

A similar route can be taken by bus number 500. The trip will be no less interesting, because. The buses of this route are double-decker! Climb to the second floor and admire the scenery, especially since 98% of the path lies along the embankment.

Douro Promenade and River Cruise

The Douro embankment is a very picturesque place. From here you can take a boat trip, of which there are many.

For example, a river trip "5 bridges"- one of the standard tours of the Douro. This route is offered by several river companies (for example). Some of the excursions start from the Ribeira embankment, some from the opposite bank, from the satellite town of Vila Nova de Gaia. Mini cruise lasts about an hour and usually costs 10 15 euro.

Advice from the experienced - it's better on such a cruise take more warm clothes. There can be very unpleasant and cold winds on the water.

Also advise to buy tickets for these excursions in the city itself, away from the embankment and tourist trails. There prices will be lower by 2-5€.

Bridges

Luis I Bridge (Ponte Luís I)

The creation of Theophilus Sayrig, a student and companion of the famous Gustave Eiffel, was completed in 1886 and is now one of business cards cities. Many travelers point out that The Luis I Bridge is one of the best viewpoints in Porto. From here you get great pictures with a view of Ribeira.

The afternoon is the worst time to shoot from here due to the location of the sun. If you shoot in the direction of Ribeira, then the second half of the day will do.

On the other side of the river, from the side of the bridge in Vila Nova de Gaia, there is a small cozy park Morru. In addition, this side has observation deck of the monastery da Serra do Pilar, with which one obtains beautiful photos Porto.

Maria Pia Bridge (Ponte Maria Pia)

Now the bridge is deactivated, and a new one has been built nearby railroad bridge. These bridges are located a little far away, just before them a sightseeing boat swims.

By the way, there is river beach, which many locals prefer to the ocean coast (because of the water temperature, obviously).

Church of Clerigos(Igreja dos Clerigos)

Walk along the pedestrian street de Santa Catarina, admire the Porto City Hall (Camara Municipal do Porto), Freedom Square, as well as the Catholic Church of Clerigos (Clerigos) and its bell tower (Torre dos Clerigos).

Church Do Carmo

Built in XVIII century. It is an excellent example of architecture built in the spirit of classicism and baroque. Right next door to Do Carmo is carmelite church. Many tourists mistake them for one building, but in fact the buildings are not related to each other in any way.

Located near the square Batalha. The building was built in the style baroque.

The facade of the building is completely made of tiles azulejo sky blue. The mosaic panel depicts scenes from the life of Saint Ildefons, as well as images from the Gospel. It took over 11000 tiles, the Portuguese artist Georges Colas worked on the drawing.

If the center of Porto has already been explored, you can go to the coast of Vila Nova de Gaia, where another interesting attraction is located - a small chapel. She is located directly on the beach, which can be reached on foot from Miramar train station (drive from Porto for 30 minutes).

I think what is remarkable here is not so much the chapel itself, but the place where it is located and incredible landscapes.

Wine cellars and tours

Porto is the birthplace of port wine. In general, port wine is fortified wine produced by special technology and only in the Douro Valley .

Therefore it is worth forget "port wine" 777 and other "port wines" produced in the field former USSR and CIS countries. And in no case should they be associated with port wine produced in Porto. Personally, thanks to these “drinks”, port wine is more associated with “chatter”, a cheap drink. But that's not the case at all, real port wine is a whole art.

In a satellite city Vila Nova de Gaia there are many wine cellars, both large and well-known brands, and small manufacturers. You can get here at buses 900, 901, 906, or take the funicular, or just walk across the bridge.

The town offers many excursions and tastings, the prices are also different, but on average cellar visit and simple tasting(2-3 inexpensive flavors) will cost 10-15 euros. You can purchase additional tasting sets. It's best to go with a company, then you can order different sets and try some port wine, and it’s just more fun together. 🙂

There are also cellars where the tour will not cost not a penny provided, if you purchase any products(everyone knows which :)). For example, Porto Augusto’s, their address is Alameda do Senhor da Pedra (there is no information about excursions on the website, prices for port wine begin from 16-19 euros, found by reviews).

Additional information about tasting rooms and more can be found on the City of Porto website.

Here is a collection of information found on the Internet about where it is better to buy port wine:

  • Port is cheaper at local shops like Pinga Dose or Mini Preso.
  • Mini Preso has one type of port wine (Calem Tawny). There are no bagaseiras and other pleasant strong drinks.
  • Jumbo (Arrabida shopping center) has a large selection of port wine, prices are normal.
  • In ordinary grocery stores, the choice is small, but the prices are lower.
  • On Cais do Ribeiro (in Porto) in the shops you can taste (free, with a bonus view of the Luis I Bridge) and buy. There are both large bottles and small souvenirs of various varieties.

A good port wine (according to people's reviews), in the name the first word in the name is the type of wine, the second is the manufacturer:

  • Ruby Cocburn;
  • LBV Cocburn and LBV Offley,
  • Vintage Taylor and Vintage Ferreira;
  • white Lagrima Sandeman.

Food in Porto

Be sure to try Porto's signature dish called Francesinha.

  • In fact, Francesinha is a sandwich for gluttons, which is able to saturate the body with a huge amount of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in one sitting. What can I say, it's better to eat once. 🙂 And eating it is not bad in the company of a glass of fino beer.
  • Try the dish "Tripash and Fashion to Porto"(Tripas à moda do Porto) from various types of meat, offal (beef tripe), smoked meats and white beans.
  • Salted cod dish Bacalhau.

Complex lunch usually served from 12 to 14-15, after which most cafes close for a siesta.

Cafe "Marina"

  • quite pleasant interior and views from the window;
  • the price is lower, because is located a little further from the center of Ribeira (almost at the Bridge itself).

Where to eat cheap in Porto

The church was built over 18 years - from 1732 to 1750.

The baroque church was built for the Brotherhood of Clerics by the Italian architect and artist Nicola Nasoni. Subsequently, Nikola Nasoni joined the Brotherhood of Clerics. And after his death, according to his last will, he was buried in the church crypt.

What about going up? In Porto, I personally liked the views from natural sites more. But if you really want to, then you can :), especially not very difficult (225 steps).

We visit the church and move down.

2. We go down to the central square save Liberty (Praça da Liberdade), where you can see city hall(center in the background), a monument to King Peter IV, who granted the constitution to Portugal (1866).

3. Walking a little forward and turning left - we see main station Port of Sao Bento. It's worth visiting even if you don't have to go anywhere.

The walls of the main hall are decorated with blue and white mosaic paintings depicting scenes from the life of the brilliant monarch João I, under whose reign Portugal flourished.

4. We move on, first down and then up Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques.
We see a pointer to the Xie Cathedral, but for now we pass by and move on.

Admiring how the abandoned houses are originally hidden

And after a few meters...

Yes, we are on the top tier of the beautiful bridge Porto - Luis I Bridge.and the weather got a bit worse.

The bridge has a length of 385.25 m and weighs 3045 tons, the length of the arch span is 172 m, and its height is 44.6 m.

In general, the bridge is multifunctional, it is both railway and automobile, and even pedestrian. It was built in 1886 according to the project of the student and companion of Gustave Eiffel Theophile Seyrig and named after King Luis I.
On it you can go to the satellite town of Vila Nova de Gaia. On one side of the Porto bridge - on the other, Vila Nova de Gaia.

5) When the bridge and the city are explored from above, you can go back and see the Se Cathedral.

For those who liked the mosaic of the railway station, you can visit the Se patio, also tiled - or in the correct "azulejo".

In general, many houses in Porto are decorated with the help of azulejos. By the way, the word itself came from the Arabs - it was they who brought tiles from the East to Spain and Portugal, and the oldest azulejos were brought to Portugal from Seville.

6) Now we go down (first along the stairs, in the previous photo) to the embankment. Any street leading down, you can go through the museum on Largo do Colégio.

And here we are at Praça Ribeira. Yellow, red, green azulejos and overcast sky are nothing for us :)

7. After walking along the promenade, we continue along Rua Reboleira and exit at Rua Infante Dom Henrique.
And in front of you will probably be the most beautiful church in Porto - Sao Francisco (circa 1400), the interior of which is richly decorated with gilded wooden carvings. (I didn't manage to take a picture :()

8. We leave the church and take tram number 1 (you can buy a ticket from the driver) and go to the ocean. The old trams themselves are one of the main attractions of Porto.

If there is little time at all, then we skip 9.

9 Hello, ocean!

10. Now go back 1 to stopMuseo do carro Electricoand change to tram 18, which will bring us to the Church of Do Carmo.

On the side wall, scenes of the founding of the Carmelite Order on the sacred Israeli Mount Carmel (azulejo) are depicted.

11 We pass the square DOS Leões and on Rua das Carmelitas we visit one of the most beautiful bookstores, where, unfortunately, photography is not allowed.

Although there are those who can :) you can see here http://zyalt.livejournal.com/376565.html, though of course it's better live.

12. Now we cross shopping center and we are again in front of the Clerigos Tower.

I tried to describe one of the ways to see the main sights of the city in a day. There are, of course, others, for example, to ride a tourist bus.

Now, as for the tasting of port wine - you need to do this in Vila Nova de Gaia

By the way, port wine is a fortified wine produced in the north-east of Portugal in the Douro River Valley. According to international marketing law, only drinks produced in the designated region of the Douro Valley according to the established technology are entitled to bear the name "port wine". And they produce it inVila Nova de Gaia, andYou can get there in 2 ways:

1) Near Clerigos - at the end of tram 22, take the funicular (rarely goes, because it waits for the trailer to pick up), you can go down the stairs - go down to the embankment, (well, or just go down to the embankment from anywhere)

Walk along the lower tier of the bridge and you are already on the promenade of Vila Nova de Gaia. - a great end to the day I think :)

2) Cross the upper level of the bridge (or take the subway fromSao Bento) and go down the cable car (or again down the winding road).

On the waterfront you can both Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, you can take a boat and ride.
And you can go off v the park Jardins do Palacio de Cristal.

Or to the market

I want to tell you about small ancient town of Porto, in which to this day are preserved oldest traditions Portugal. It will appeal to everyone who wants to get acquainted with the medieval, its unique culinary traditions and not go broke, as well as lovers of narrow streets, interesting houses, temples and, of course, the best port wine in the world.

Attractions in the main areas of Porto

A special tourist map. On it you will find all the main attractions, metro lines and street names will also be indicated there. As a tourist you will need visit only 3 main areas to get into the spirit of Porto, Portugal and see all its sights.

Ribeira area

This is one of the oldest and most colorful districts. Its streets, only 1.5 meters wide, meander between blocks of old houses, which are decorated with blue and white tiles. These multi-colored houses are built right next to each other and look like a children's appliqué, but that's what gives charisma to the whole area.

  • Here it is Praça da Ribeira square, where in the old days there was a huge market, and now it is rather a gastronomic point.
  • Not far from the square you will see Fountain of Cuba da Ribeira which was erected in 1780. To this day he is impressive. statue of John the Baptist at its base and adorning it with a coat of arms.
  • Further on your way you will meet Casa do Infante house, in which the heir to King Juan the First was born back in 1394.
  • Nearby is located Church of Igrejade San Francisco and the majestic fortress wall of Fernandina which was built in the 14th century.

In my opinion, this area is best explored by bike. Because it is a walk along the crooked streets without a special route that will show you how slowly people live locals. Taste a port wine at Praça da Ribeira and take a short trip back to a typical medieval day in Porto.

Did you know? Residents of the Ribeira region in Porto are called "tripeiros", which means "offal".

  • After that, be sure to take a walk along the beautiful promenade of Cais da Ribeira, which is located on the coast of the Douro River and pay attention to the yachts moored to its banks. Some of them used to transport port wine, and now they ride tourists.
  • Being on the embankment, you will not pass by Luis I bridge which was opened in 1886 year. This incredible two-level creation connects the Ribeira area with the suburb of Villa Nova de Gaia and has pedestrian areas on each of the "floors".

Vila Nova de Gaia

This area is not so much sights for the "eyes" as for "soul and taste". On this shore are the best cellars with port wine from a variety of manufacturers, as well as warehouses and cork factories.

At the end of it, you will be expected wine tasting.

  • In addition, you will find here vintners' club Feitoria Inglesa, which was built at the end of the 18th century, and the Port Wine Museum.
  • pay attention to church relating to the monastery of Serra do Pilar of the XVI century.
  • Depart from the embankment cruise excursions with a program of 1 hour, but during this time you will see all the bridges of Porto.
  • Also on this coast cable car, which connects the river bank with a small area of the Serra do Pilar monastery, which offers a wonderful view of the immediate surroundings of the city.

After such a walk, you will still feel the heady aroma of the best wines of Portugal and a pleasant tired memory of this wonderful area.

Historic center of Porto

The historic center of the city has been listed as a famous world heritage UNESCO in 1996. And the most striking attraction here is considered to be Exchange Palace, where in the XVIII century. there was a marketplace.

Be sure to come to Cathedral of Porto, which was erected in the XII - XIII centuries and is visible from anywhere in the city. It is said that it was around this cathedral that the city began to form.

It is open for visits from 9:00 to 19:00, and a ticket costs 3 EUR.

Also go to Avenida dos Allados street, which will open up a huge number of rich mansions period of the XIX - XX centuries. One of the most beautiful temples in the city is considered Church of San Francisco 1233, made in the Gothic style with elements of the Baroque.

Did you know? One of the most important symbols of Porto is the 75-meter Clerigos Tower. Previously, it acted as a guide for ships that called at the port. Today, from its observation deck, you can see the city for only 2 EUR.

The beaches of Porto

Porto is surrounded by huge coastline, and if time permits, I advise you to sunbathe in the immediate vicinity of the city. This is a great opportunity to plunge into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and, if you wish, learn to surf.

If you got to Porto by road and are very limited in time, then here is an approximate route for you through the main places of the city:
