They keep the memory of what happened many centuries ago. This creates a unique charm that tourists admire.

Lion City is unique, and if you come here at least once, you will definitely want to come back!

What to see in Lviv and where to go for a walk - a list of the best places

Rynok Square

Of course, we cannot ignore the popular tourist places in Lviv, so let's start with them. Market Square is the most famous square of the city, which is located in the very center. Streets diverge from it, which are dotted with a variety of themed cafes and restaurants. Here you can often hear street musicians.

Italian patio

Cozy place in the heart of Lion city. Here you can relax from the noisy streets filled with tourists. Back in the 16th century, when the courtyard was being built, the owners tried to equip it so that this corner would become a place of rest. Now the Italian courtyard often receives guests. A coffee shop operates here, and jazz and classical concerts are often heard.

high castle

Being in Lviv and not climbing the High Castle is like not seeing Khreshchatyk in Kiev. This is the highest point of the city of Lion, the height of the mountain is 413 meters. Once upon a time there was a castle. Building up the mountain began in the 13th century. When the castle was rebuilt and it became clearly visible from the surrounding territories, the mountain began to be called Castle, or "High Castle".

The High Castle is actually a mountain, not a castle

In the 17th century, Swedish troops passed through Lviv and stormed the stronghold. Since then, the castle began to crumble. And, unfortunately, century after century, no one cared about its safety. Streets were paved with stones from the mountain, defensive structures were dismantled in order to build houses in the city. Now a small wall remains from the castle fortifications. And Castle Hill has become one of the most beloved viewing platforms for Lviv residents and guests of the city. And this is not surprising, because the view from the mountain is really incredible.

Lviv Opera

The opera is one of the most architecturally expressive monuments of Lviv. Its elegant building surprises residents and guests of the city with incredible luxury and perfection. Operettas, operas and other premieres often take place here.

Lychakiv cemetery

Usually, cemeteries are not a place for tourists, but this is not about Lviv. The Lychakiv cemetery is not just a place for burial, but a historical and cultural museum-reserve. Tomb sculptures are real works of art.

The oldest burials at the Lychakiv cemetery date back to the end of the 18th century. Mostly buried here. famous people. The Polish writer Arthur Grott and his beloved Baroness Wanda Monnet are buried here. Also, Ivan Franko, Solomiya Krushelnitskaya, Markiyan Shashkevich found their rest at the Lviv cemetery.

Non-touristic places in Lviv

The real Lviv will open only if you break out of the vicious circle of buildings adjacent to Rynok Square, get lost among the crooked streets of the Old Town, not being afraid to look into courtyards and courtyards.

Walk around luxury villas

Tram number 2 will take you from the noisy center to the silence of the ancient surroundings, where, among the luxurious villas, an epiphany will come: the city can be quiet.

General Chuprynka Street

General Chuprynka Street stretches from the church of St. Mary Magdalene (now the House of Organ and Chamber Music) to Academician Rudnitsky. Tourists do not walk along it at all, which is probably why it has still retained the spirit of the times and has not acquired dozens of restaurants and cafes. Once this area was called Kastelivka, and its proximity to the center prompted the construction of new houses in late XIX century.

General Chuprynka Street

The indefatigable imagination of the architects generously splashed out on this street in the form of many villas and mansions built for the then Lviv elite and intelligentsia.

One of the most notable buildings- house-castle on General Chuprynka at number 50-52. It is interesting that the mansion is still used for its intended purpose - ordinary people live in its apartments.

House-castle on General Chuprynka street, 50-52

plasticine house

The creation of modern designers - "Plasticine House" resembles the creations of Gaudi. The house is located on Tsetnerovka Street, 16, which is not far from Lychakovsky Park. The owner inherited a completely inconspicuous mansion, which he gave to local architect Nikolai Senik for renovation. And now the building looks absolutely unrealistic against the background of ordinary Polish mansions, and it's a pity that few people know about it.

Life Safety University

Lviv universities as a whole are undeservedly deprived of tourist attention. majestic building The Lviv University of Life Safety looks like a castle, and it is in no way inferior to Chernivtsi University, which is the main tourist attraction of the capital of Bukovina.

Lviv University of Life Safety

The building was built in the middle of the 19th century by the same architect as the building of the Austrian parliament and the Vienna arsenal. It housed the House of the Disabled of Galicia, crippled in wars. The main drawback of the university as an object for tourists is that it works behind closed doors, since it is subordinate to the State Emergency Service.

Chapel at the university

But you can get here! On Sunday there is an opportunity to go to the territory of the university, because there is a chapel where worship is held. And if you say that you are going precisely for this purpose, they will definitely let you in.

Lviv parks

Parks in Lviv are the real pride of the city, because there are a lot of them and they are all incredibly beautiful. Stryisky park can surprise with its garden architecture, the Znesinnya park (the former Imperial Forest or Kaiserwald) starts from the Lion Mountain and rests on the famous Shevchenkovsky Hai - an ethnocomplex under open sky where various festivals and celebrations are held.

Striysky park

In winter, it is good to wander along the snow-covered alleys, and in summer it is good to have picnics on the hills, which offer a magnificent view of the tin and tiled roofs of the Old Town.

Park "Znesinnya"

A park completely unknown to tourists is Pogulanka. Steep ravines, covered with massive beeches, descend from the hills of Pasechna Street. You can't think of a better place to take a break from the noisy city.

observation decks

Without seeing the city from above, it is impossible to truly appreciate its scale. In Lviv, you just need to climb as high as possible and enjoy the beauty of weathervanes and roofs.

The Tower of the Town Hall and the High Castle, which offer a view of the city, are too banal, because there are a lot of non-standard places in Lviv from where the city can be seen from a fresh perspective.

Firstly, this is the Church of Saints Olga and Elizabeth, which is on the corner of the street. Gorodetskaya and Stepan Bandera. For a very small amount, a completely non-standard view opens up from the observation deck.

Church of Saints Olga and Elizabeth

Secondly, an alternative to the High Castle is Bald Mountain. From it, in contrast to the High Castle, which is popular among tourists, a fantastic panorama of the Old Town spreads out, but at the same time trees do not interfere at all. Thirdly, you can go to the observation deck of the Citadel.

Yard of Lost Toys

Dolls, teddy bears, rattles, garden gnomes, plastic Carlsons and other toys are stored in this unusual yard. The entourage creates a mystical atmosphere. According to local residents, the collection on display belongs to one of the residents. Not even all Lviv residents know about the existence of this courtyard.

Open air gallery

One of the newest art spaces, located in the center, in the courtyard near Rynok Square. "Schos tsikave" is the only open-air gallery in Lviv. Young artists can exhibit their works here, the expositions often change. In addition to exhibitions, master classes and acoustic concerts are held at Shchos Tsikava. There is also a handicraft shop and a coffee shop of the same name.

Street with multiple names

Since 2006, the festival "Kinolev" has been held in Lviv. The festival has its own tradition - to official name The name of the person to whom the next festival is dedicated began to be added annually to Archival Street. Now the street, in addition to the main one, has many more names: Bergman, Fellini, Truffaut, Ilyenko and Parajanov. Appropriate signs are hung on one of the buildings of the short Archive Street.

  • Where to stay in Lviv

Lviv is probably one of the few cities in Ukraine where there are many not only expensive hotels, but also cozy budget hostels. In general, the options to settle somewhere are the sea: apartments for rent, hostels, hotels, country complexes. The main thing - remember that accommodation must be booked in advance, especially before the Easter and Christmas holidays, as well as on Independence Day.

Morning

For most tourists from Kiev who arrive in Lviv by train, the main problem is how to pass the time before checking into a hotel. Of course, after the trip you will want to refresh yourself, so in our guide to the most "delicious" places in Lviv, you can choose the institution that you like and can afford, and have a bite to eat there before walking around the city.

10:00 - 13:00 - walk around the center of Lviv

First of all, go to the tourist information center, on Rynok Square, 1, behind the Neptune monument, and ask them for a free map of the city. Armed, we go on a tour of the center of Lviv.

The first attraction of the city of Lion, which we will visit - Latin Cathedral Church(Katedralnaya Square, 1). It perfectly combines the architectural features of past eras. It is a pity that none of the master builders saw their work to the end, the cathedral was built for so long. Interestingly, on the walls of the Cathedra on the east side there are cannonballs that do not allow you to forget about the formidable Turkish siege of Lviv in 1672. The core tells more about this with the inscription: "Ex obsidione turcica", which means: "From the Turkish siege, the summer of God 1672, the day of September 28".

Opposite, on the corner with Rynok Square, one of the oldest Renaissance houses in Lviv cannot be overlooked - Kamenitsa of the Scholz-Wolfovich families. It has hardly changed since 1570.

To the left of the Cathedra building is chapel of the Boims- a monument of the Renaissance, similar to which is not in all European architecture. From the side of Halytska Street, on the wall of the chapel, we can see the original portraits of the early 17th century rich merchant Georg Boim and his wife Jadwiga. Going further, in the niches of the facade we see the figures of the apostles Peter and Paul. Interestingly, when creating such curly compositions, ordinary people were used as models. Therefore, here you can get as close as possible to the time of that era.

Having bypassed the Cathedra, in front of the entrance from the side of the tram tracks we see Campian Chapel. Step inside the cathedra and see beautifully painted walls, vaults covered with fresco paintings by Stroinsky, and stained glass windows designed by Megoffer and Matejko of the 19th century. After enjoying the beautiful interior, we leave the Cathedra and head along Teatralnaya Street.

On the left, pay attention to Church of Peter and Paul of the Jesuit Order, which is located at number 13 on Teatralnaya Street. This is a baroque shrine of the 17th century, one of the largest churches in Lviv. Now it is closed, and inside contains a book depository.

We travel further to Teatralnaya, 18. Behind the hotel "Leopolis" you will see Museum of Natural History, once the palace of the famous zoologist and archaeologist Didytsky. Here is one of the oldest mechanical elevators in Europe.

From the Theater Square, the route goes along the Armenian, and then - along the Krakow streets. Here we see the famous Armenian Cathedral - a unique monument of oriental culture on the European land of the XIV-XV centuries.

The interior of the temple is extremely attractive with carvings, window paintings and decorative mosaics. The dome resting on hollow ribs made of earthenware jugs deserves special attention. We leave the temple, turn left, then left again, and then turn onto Armenian street and through the arched passage of the bell tower we go to South courtyard. Unique place evoking indescribable emotions. The remains of the Armenian cemetery have been preserved here, some of the plates are over 600 years old. Another highlight of the complex is the wooden carved chapel of the 18th century in the courtyard.

Further from the intersection with Drukarska Street, we see house "Seasons"(Armenian, 23). The facade of the building corresponds to the name. In the 70s, the sculptor Gavriil Krasutsky decorated the house, figuratively speaking, different times of the year. The route runs along Armenian Street, then to the right, turn onto the Museum Square - and a breathtaking dominican cathedral.

We leave the temple and go left along a small square to monument to Ivan Fedorov- Ukrainian first printer. Here, on a small square, there is a second-hand book market. For symbolic money, you can buy books by classics of world literature here. And most importantly, the pages of such books keep the unique atmosphere of Lviv streets and the market.

After that, we cross Russkaya Street, go along Podvalnaya Street. We pass the City Arsenal, now it is located here the only weapons museum in Ukraine.

Then through the gates of the monastery - Clay Gates from the Customs Square - we get to the monastery courtyard. It seems that time stopped here 400 years ago. Further from the Bernardine monastery, we head along Serbskaya Street towards Rynok Square. We go out to Rynok Square to the most interesting side - the eastern one, where the most famous stone buildings of Lviv are located. These are the Bandinelli Palace (Rynok Square, 2), Chernaya Kamenitsa (Rynok Square, 4), and, of course, the Kornyakt Palace (Rynok Square, 6).

And finally, let's go to Lviv City Hall, which is in the center market square. Now, as in ancient times, the city council of Lviv operates in its premises. However, do not think that such an official status can prevent you from visiting it. You can walk through the corridors of the town hall and get to the highest point. Climb 350 wooden steps and from the observation deck you will see the whole incredible beauty ancient city.

13:00 - 15:00 - climb to the highest point of Lviv - the High Castle

413 meters above sea level. The park high castle is located on the mountain, which was artificially poured at the end of the 19th century in honor of the anniversary of the Union of Lublin. Thus, Lviv received an incomparable observation deck. It is very convenient that in 10-15 minutes on foot in any direction from the noisy streets of the city you find yourself in the comfort of centuries-old trees.

15:00 - 16:00 - lunch

In fact, the variations and variety of Lviv cafes and restaurants are impressive. It has long been known that Lviv is the capital of coffee and chocolate. You can try them on every corner - Lviv residents know a lot about gastronomy. As for a hearty delicious lunch - look again at ours.

16:00 - 19:00 - walk through Lviv galleries and antique shops

You can walk through the galleries and shops on Armenian Street for free. In the "Dzyga" gallery, on 35 Armenian Street, for example, every two weeks there is a new exhibition of contemporary artists. Here you can see interesting photography, painting, installations and performances, relax in a cafe.

Alternatively, you can choose a guided tour Lychakiv cemetery. The famous memorial cemetery, which is located on an area of 40 hectares. It was founded back in 1876. The Lychakiv necropolis is a valuable monument of nature, history and culture. You can stay here longer and take advantage of the innovation - a night tour of the cemetery.

22:00 - 00:00 - night tour of Lviv

You saw the cultural Lviv from all sides, discovered the art capital of Lion and ate your fill in the original Lviv cafes. Now it's time to see Lviv at night, adventurous and mystical. If you like this option, then book a tour "Lviv Night Watch". Together with the burgomaster and "Lviv night service workers" you will check the city, find out if the burgomaster has lost the key, and what will happen when the clock on the City Hall strikes.

If this option does not suit you, just take a walk around Lviv at night. Very often open-air concerts, live music evenings are held here, and when it is warm, dances are held in the open air on the square.

Lviv is the same fairy-tale city, a dream city, which is sung about in a popular song. Every person must visit here. Stay and you!

Coming to Lviv for a walk, or planning business meetings, trainings, conferences, of course, you want to see as many sights as possible, get to know them, touch the history. And some baggage of new knowledge, along with souvenirs and photographs, to bring home. If you planned a trip spontaneously, which often happens among young people, students and couples in love, the information I have collected will be useful and will serve as a kind of guide to interesting places in Lviv.

If you have at least two full days, I suggest you definitely visit such interesting tourist sites as:

- The first attraction that meets every tourist is the beautiful railway station of the city.

- Church of St. Elizabeth It is located 5-10 minutes walk from railway station, it is simply impossible not to notice it. You can visit it both upon arrival in Lviv and before departure.

Having arrived by tram to Rynok Square, first of all go to the Information tourist centre, they will answer your questions, help you with accommodation, offer excursions, and also give you free maps with the indicated sights. Here on Rynok Square, I recommend taking your first sightseeing tour of the city:

- Sightseeing tour on a sightseeing tram , upon arrival in the city, go on an amazing journey through the ancient streets, thus, your first acquaintance with tourist sites and the Old Town as a whole will take place. This sightseeing tour, helps the tourist determine the location of excursion objects relative to each other, and makes it clear what you would like to visit first of all in detail. The price will be 50 UAH;

After the end of the tour, the tram will bring you to another city attraction:

- Rynok Square historical place, where from time immemorial life was seething, bazaars were held, people's gatherings were collected, negotiations were held, there were houses of noble lords and ladies. This place can be called the starting point for the start of all excursion routes by the city. In order not to go far, let's go to the most central attraction:

- City Hall , more than 400 steps lead to the top, and an amazing view of the city opens from a bird's eye view. It is better to plan a visit to the Town Hall in the morning or evening hours, at this time there is the least amount of tourists. The cost of visiting will be 15 UAH.

Being at the top of the Town Hall, you can visually determine the location of objects (cathedrals, churches, churches, theatre) offered for visiting, appreciate their beauty and grandeur from above, they look especially romantic when illuminated in the evening hours.

Having descended from the Town Hall to Rynok Square, take a walk along the perimeter, having bought a guidebook card, where for each Kamenitsa (houses along the perimeter of the square) there is a detailed description in the form of building time, restoration, and its guests.

- Kamenitsy on Rynok Square - each house is a separate story, a masterpiece of architectural creation, and together it is a unique ensemble of Rynok Square. Now almost every Kamenitsa is either a museum, a coffee shop, a souvenir shop, a restaurant or a hostel. Pay special attention to:

- Black Stone - one of the oldest and most interesting architectural structures.

- Italian patio - here every tourist can appreciate not only the masterpiece of the facade, but also the interior decoration of Kamenitsa, made in the Italian style, now there is a restaurant where you can drink coffee or dine in a romantic atmosphere. Entrance for visitors 5 UAH.

After seeing the sights of the central part of the Old Town, we will go to get acquainted with the cathedrals, churches and churches.

- Armenian Church - a beautiful and unusual for Ukraine eastern architectural building, says that in Lviv in the old days, many nationalities coexisted peacefully.

- Jesuit Church of St. Peter and Paul - opened recently, before that for a long time there was a city archive, the church is extraordinarily beautiful from the inside, but it needs urgent repairs, see the service on the weekends.

- Dominican church - one of the most beloved and visited objects by tourists, it is especially beautiful in the evening, when the lights are turned on, services are held here on weekends.

- Cathedral Latin Church - located on the corner of Rynok Square, the cathedral was built for so long that none of its masters saw the church in its completed form. On the east side, on the wall of the Cathedra, you can see the cannonballs, testifying to the Turkish siege of Lvov in 1672.

- Church of the Nativity Holy Mother of God - here are the relics of the patron saint of all lovers - St. Valentine.

Bypassing the shrines, you can see such sights as:

- Arsenal - where the most unique collection of ancient weapons and all kinds of devices for murder is collected. The museum is open daily from 10.00 to 17.30.

- Opera theatre - comparable in beauty and uniqueness to La Scala and the Vienna Opera.

- Flea Book Market - a paradise for lovers of literature, here you can buy for symbolic money, old books of famous classics of world literature.

- High Castle - now it is highest point cities, a park is planted here, favorite place recreation of youth on weekends, newlyweds and tourists.

- Lychakiv cemetery - the sacred place of the city, where the most famous and revered personalities are buried, an excursion for strong-willed tourists. You can get here by city tram in 15-20 minutes.

After reviewing cultural, historical sites, I recommend visiting:

- conceptual themed restaurants such as "Kryivka", "Gas lamp", "House of Legends", "Masoch cafe", "Under the golden rose", "Masons", "Left Bank", "Digging Kavi", here you can not only have a delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner, but also get acquainted with the history of the objects provided in the cafe. For most tourists who come to Lviv for the first time, Kryivka is very popular, located near the main entrance to the Town Hall, there is no sign, the location can be determined by the Masons cafe. In these conceptual cafes, the entire interior is akin to a museum; tourists get tremendous pleasure by visiting such themed establishments.

- chocolate workshop - here you can make the most delicious chocolate masterpieces, and if you wish, you can take part in a master class on making personalized items, once you get here, it’s simply impossible to leave empty-handed.

Of course, the list of attractions can be supplemented by various museums, of which there are a great many, but having visited at least all these objects, you will definitely have a positive impression of beautiful city Lvov.

Which, in the absence of competitors, is steadily growing in price. If earlier it was possible to go to Lviv to drink coffee and take a walk for a couple of days, now we are planning it as a real trip with a decent budget.

Main items of expenses when traveling to Lviv

What expenses await tourists in Lvov? These are the road, housing, food and expenses for attractions.

Road to Lviv

Automobile- expensive, but quite convenient and fast, from Kiev - 6.5 hours with stops, 550 km. I get back and forth exactly two tanks of gasoline, or about 2000 UAH. Great helps save service blah blah car- up to 75% of the cost of fuel. He wrote about his experience of using blah = la car here.

By railway - this is by far the most cheap way. From Kiev in Lviv there are two dozen trains, including several high-speed ones. The ticket can be bought on the Ukrzaliznytsia website. Depending on the chosen train and route, the ticket will cost from 120 (regular) to 350 hryvnias (express). Prices as of early 2016.

Bus and air travel in the case of Lviv - exotic ways of traveling, so I do not include them in the review. The first is uncomfortable, the second is unclaimed by tourists because of the high price.

Housing expenses in Lviv

cheap housing in Lviv started to leave the city a couple of years ago. There are many offers, accommodation options - private mini-hotels, hostels, tourist hotels and business class hotels. Lviv is a city where the cult of coffee is historically developed. The most famous - "glamorous" coffee houses - "Cafe 1" and "Svit Kavi". Folk places where both pleasant and tasty are “Virmenka” and “Dziga” on Armenian street. The price of a cup of coffee is from 12 UAH. in Armenian and in Dzyga, 30-50 UAH. in "Svit Kavi". The price of accompanying coffee drinks - liquor, cognac, tinctures or liqueurs is proportional to the price of a cup of coffee and the degree of glamor of the institution.

In addition, there are food courts in shopping malls in areas adjacent to the centre. The price of lunch with pleasure is 100-150 UAH. if seriously sit in good location- 250 UAH "from the nose". There are thousands of guides in Lviv, both new and original, as well as the old school of Soviet times. The price of the tour is from 120 to 200 UAH. per hour, depending on the size of the group, duration and format of the tour. Most of the tours take place on Rynok Square and the nearest adjacent streets and temples. Usually 30-50 percent of the time of the tour is taken by a trip to "fake" attractions, such as "Kavi's Dig", the basement of the restaurant Left Bank (under Opera House) or the house of Legends. You can visit these places on your own.

"... you can look for a guide using the "scientific poke method" - Rynok Square is full of unemployed guides who will tell and show Lviv at a reasonable price, but no one can guarantee the quality. Cheap accommodation or hotels in Lviv can be found through the booking system Hotels Combined, a service I use myself.
